Also, that Billboard article screams “won’t be at Coachella” to me
If her team decides it’s best for her to not perform at Coachella yet, I guess I wouldn’t be shocked if she wasn’t there. She is playing iHeartRadio Music Festival in September though which isn’t nothing.

Especially with Olivia Rodrigo, who had a career singing in television before hitting as a pop star, or Billie Eilish, whose brother writes her songs. Like, an "industry plant" as a negative to me is when someone is heavily pushed that nobody actually likes. People like these artists and they earned their place.
Anyway, neither is playing Coachella IMO; if Rodrigo plays I think she'd be start of the third line or late second line, even if she's in reality bigger than that, and she'd get the Billie Eilish outdoor slot.

I Heart Radio is a more controlled event though, right? I’ve always assumed it was closer to a telecast than a concert. Anyway, it seems weird to me that her team would “plant” this story about how she’ll be playing small venues in the spring, and then for her to also have to do Coachella from there. I’d say she does the spring tour, and assuming things go well we might see her on Lolla or ACL lineups for late summer/fall

She could also be billed lower than we're expecting her to be. She's not featured on the main lineup posters for iHeartRadio and she's playing the second Daytime Stage. I don't see her being billed top 3 at Coachella like others here do, I think end of second line is more realistic with an Outdoor Theatre set.

No matter what her set is gonna be packed out, so I don’t think billing makes a difference. And if the theater shows go so bad they have to pull her from Coachella, or she plays and flops, that would be a disaster for her. Doesn’t seem like they want to take that risk.

How do I get to be an industry plant? Anyone in the industry want to make me a plant? I have no talent but I'm game if it means I get prime billing at Coachella. Feeeeeed me.

Step 1. Have some sort of success as a musical act. Even relatively niche acts can be industry plants. Step 2. Have a man on the internet accuse you of being an industry plant.
Bonus: As someone pointed out earlier being a woman really helps with step 2.

Industry plant is a bullshit concept trotted out by old men to shit on women in music. She hasn’t played a show yet because of Covid. Everyone works with other songwriters and she’s not trying to cover up that fact.
The yodeling boy who was “discovered” in a Walmart was a plant. That shit was fake as hell. There’s nothing fake here.
Do love the guy who pretends to attend music festivals griping about “authenticity” tho
Khalid says hello!
Can't wait to see Olivia at the Coachella 2023 I don't plan on attending.

I’ll take a stab at this…. but fair warning I have a black thumb for plants, which I’m sure will translate into me overproducing everything you do and destroying your career faster than I can destroy my house plants.
Fucked up how Rodrigo played the long game by planting himself in a renown, acoustic act just to bail on Gabriela when Coachella came calling with that sub money.

Sex Pistols and The Police were industry plants too but nobody seems to mind about them. I really don't care about whether someone's a plant or not. Nearly everybody got to where they are in the industry due to some kind of connection they have. In very few rare cases is criticism is warranted IMO. The whole Tramp Stamps fiasco would be one of those since they came off as inauthentic and pandering as a riot grrrl band but even that is an extreme case
If plants were not the established norm throughout the modern era, especially pre-internet, then more ugly people would have been able to release music and I just can’t. Pipe down, uglies.

I think the Sex Pistols and Milli Vanilli are the best examples of industry plants you could have. I guess the Simon Cowell groups as well. Nowadays it’s just a lazy excuse for people who don’t like a popular musician. It’s pretty hard to become a big pop artist organically without a giant industry push. But in the long run who really gives a fuck. Water finds it’s level eventually and if you make music that’s received well/popular then what’s the difference?

iHeart is def just a telecast/showcase for artists and nothing else. Olivia is billed on the Daytime stage for Saturday of the festival. So itll be a decently sized crowd but likely only performs 3 songs and thats it. I would still designate that as a very controlled environment due to the nature of the event. But I mean if anyone wants to pay $100 just to see her then its their only chance.
Mariah Carey was the ultimate industry plant, with her record executive boyfriend (later husband and then ex-husband) driving a huge push, with lots of payola, to get her on the radio and the charts. Then listeners loved her and she had a huge career.
Im talking about the live show/touring perspective. There's artists like Bon Iver who have struggled with anxiety / stage freight after blowing up / getting to a certain spot on festivals or playing certain venues. I cannot imagine what it would be for her and if she's ready for it. Billie toured twice here in Belgium before completely blowing up, once the played a 600-person venue and the show after was 1/1,5k I think. I personally think it'd be very unhealthy to just let her do massive shows from the get go.
Yeah, I dont know why somebody would think that after a few tv performances that Olivia Rodrigo can take on 50,000 people just cause. Billie did 2 tours and a summer of festivals before the debut album was even released pre Coachella. Then Weekend 1 they had technical issues and the performance wasnt that great. So you can try to make sure everything is planned to perfection but its not a guarantee it all goes according to plan. Like Ive said, if this was a normal year for 2021, Olivia wouldve been in the middle of the poster and likely gotten a more prominent spot on the schedule due to Drivers License but thats it. Not like demands to be a subheadliner.
it literally says they're scheduling her for 3,000 - 5,000 people venues
This discussion is reminding me how damn difficult it’s going to be to grab tickets for her spring tour.
what venue do you think she'd play in Austin? Moody? 2 nights? COTA (🤮)
can't imagine her not playing something like Toyota here
Money is on a multiple residency night at the new Waterloo amphitheater. Then comes back in 2023 at the Moody Arena after doing ACL. Speculation of course.

yeah putting her in the bold side bar of ACL and giving her the Billie 2019 slot makes sense
