Was surprised to read in Pitchfork's fest review that Turnstile played to a half empty tent
I mean the Mojave is now the same size as the old Sahara - for a rock band to even half fill that behemoth up during primetime is pretty damn impressive. If it was the Gobi half full then yeah, that would be a bummer.
another great day at Coachella yesterday. Started with Hayden James, which was hot as hell and the crowd sucked and the set was mid anyway. then went way early to Viagra Boys to get a drink and escape the heat, who played a fantastic if short set list and a strong show. Went from there to Orville Peck, who was fantastic. Played a lot of new stuff but it all sounded great. Then Fred again, my set of the weekend and an incredible, cathartic experience with friends and that crowd and golden hour — set of the weekend for me. Danced so hard at Fred that I spent the next hour recovering in the beer garden by Sahara watching Duck Sauce, which was cheesy and fun. Went straight from Duck Sauce to the Yuma line for Fatboy Slim, took about 25 minutes in line to get in. Fatboy was fine, not my favorite thing, but he’s a legend and I checked him off the list and had a good time. Then left for Jamie xx, who crushed it, not sure the crowd was ready for the set he played lol. Then half of Honey Dijon/Blessed Madonna and close with SHM/Weeknd. Got almost all The Weeknd stuff which was a lot of fun, thought that part of the performance was really strong musically, visually, and showman-wise.
oh and I got to meet and talk with Fred again in the Mojave during Honey Dijon, tell him how much his music has meant to me over the past year, share some stories and take a picture. Perfect capstone to the weekend
What about Florence and The Machine for the add this week. Her album is out same as Arcade Fire and she has one more uk show tomorrow then after thats its back to LA where she normally lives anyway. So she would be rehearsed and stuff already.

I think this Arcade Fire thing was a very successful experiment in bringing back a former headliner who makes no sense closing the main stage anymore. Great press for the band and festival, nice surprise for the fans who were there. But it's going to make last minute speculation absolutely unbearable going forward. Fake scoopers and Reddit sleuths about to feast.

But in all seriousness, I’m curious if this could also start a trend of have four headliners with the “special guest” listed on the bottom. There are plenty of headliners/near-headliner level artists that they could solve billing issues with if they were just listed on the bottom of the poster.

Makes a lot of sense as a way to promote a tour/album.

It makes a ton of sense for somebody like ODESZA - three headliners, have them close out after the most flexible headliner, and give them the bottom billing. It's interesting to me that after the lineup came out, several other fests mimicked this billing immediately.
It's the equivalent of "with George Clooney" in terms of movie credits, and with so many artists being so difficult about getting on the second line when they really are "third line" artists, it helps.

Several other smaller festivals have done this before Coachella did. I recall CRSSD doing it for Kaskade once. I think I’ll incorporate this into my next mock.

I want to say after being on the campgrounds and at a lot of shows that had a younger audience, Odesza could 100% headline Coachella next year.
Everywhere I turned people couldn't shut up about them for one reason or another

Just got home. Might have been my favorite Coachella yet (from a performance perspective, some other stuff was off)
Arcade Fire was such a special set. I saw them at my first Coachella (2014) and it was emotional watching them at the first one back in 3 years. Can’t wait for weekend 2.
What are you guys talking about with this “trend of surprise guest sets?”
Lady Gaga was scheduled for a surprise 2020 set. Kanye did Sunday service as a last minute surprise in 2018. Pixies played a surprise set in 2014. Prince was a surprise HEADLINER in 2008.
It’s not a new trend. It’s just fucking Coachella.
