It makes a ton of sense for somebody like ODESZA - three headliners, have them close out after the most flexible headliner, and give them the bottom billing. It's interesting to me that after the lineup came out, several other fests mimicked this billing immediately.
It's the equivalent of "with George Clooney" in terms of movie credits, and with so many artists being so difficult about getting on the second line when they really are "third line" artists, it helps.
I want to say after being on the campgrounds and at a lot of shows that had a younger audience, Odesza could 100% headline Coachella next year.
Everywhere I turned people couldn't shut up about them for one reason or another
That doesn’t necessarily equate to ticket sales and media attention. If next year’s headliners are Rage, Frank and ODESZA, I can guarantee ODESZA would be faaaarrr less talked about in the media. That’s honestly a pretty weak trio for Coachella’s standards too. The only way I think they work as a headliner is if they’re fourth like SHM was but even SHM generated more press than ODESZA could.
I would have to reserve judgment until their next album drops but if it performs just the same as their others, I just don’t see them headlining.
What are you guys talking about with this “trend of surprise guest sets?”
Lady Gaga was scheduled for a surprise 2020 set. Kanye did Sunday service as a last minute surprise in 2018. Pixies played a surprise set in 2014. Prince was a surprise HEADLINER in 2008.
It’s not a new trend. It’s just fucking Coachella.
Pixies, Skepta, Julian Casablancas. They do it all the time , this one was just bigger.

Oh shit I totally forgot about that Voidz set in 2014. Good memory.
I don’t think it was bigger than Gaga, Prince, or Kanye, though.
Should I just stay in that area until much later in the day and bring a laptop?
Nope. Leave early if you can. It wont settle down til the night time if you were willing to wait a whole other day. Took me til now to get back just to the 909 and that included a casino stop and a quick lunch. I left at 11:15 ish. Right now its still jacked up getting back from there.

1st Coachella in the books after being at 11 Bonnaroo’s.
Logistically, Coachella needs to get their shit together. The locker situation, the water situation, the “ no alcohol but only in beer garden” situation , the merch tent situation were not good. Bonnaroo is WAY better.
But……
The performances? Life changing is the words I’d use.
Friday, Arcade Fire into IDLES into The Avalanches into Lane 8 was just an INCREDIBLE night of music. Arcade Fire sounded FABULOUS, IDLES were my surprise of the weekend ( besides Viagra Boys), Lane 8 was wonderful, Big Sean completely KILLED it,and……
The Avalanches show was the greatest thing I’ve seen in awhile. Life changing…….unreal……something I won’t forget for a long time.
Saturday……….well, WOW. Didn’t think Friday could be topped, but it was matched.
The Disclosure show was one for the books. EASILY my favorite set after The Avalanches. The vibe , the sound, the crowd…..all top notch, and easily the most enjoyable show of the weekend.
BROCKHAMPTON’s final show was incredible ( with them dropping the surprise of their final album coming soon).
Caribou…….. what else can be said. Their show was absolute perfection. And Hot Chip was a fun way to close the night
I was so mentally drained after the amazing Friday n Saturday I had, Sunday I played it easy, but…… Viagra Boys were terrific, Vince Staples did a lot of Rosa Park, Fred Again were a lot of fun, and Denzel Curry was a perfect closer.
Was Coachella perfect? No Logistical problems out the ass But The performances saved it
Unreal stuff Id probably never see at any other fest. .
Initially some water stations were not working or had low pressure. Also not labeled as clearly as they shouldve been on the map. Some vendors ran out of water at times. Less water only vendor carts out in the middle of the fields so you had to drag your ass clear across to buy or refill.

We really like the beer gardens cause we dont need drunk assholes WITH drinks in their hand fucking up sets. Or better yet, a field full of alcohol cups. Underage drinking would shoot up like 1000% if there were no beer gardens. Not as if it doesnt happen anyway, but having to force the kiddies back to the beer gardens and away from their crew of 20 friends makes a diff in decisions.
The merch thing used to be way worse, did you wanna wait out in the sun for those 2 hours? They had it in 2019 with air conditioning and enclosed but covid prob made em change that. They had one smaller merch tent hidden away before. But now vip had one. I think they could maybe go back to ordering merch in the app. They had it in 2018 iirc just for coachella merch and i ordered fest stuff that way and peaced out in 15 mins. I was able to endure the merch line this time cause i had the time to spare and another weekend to catch missed acts. Worth it for me and not having to try at the end of the night where it still mightve been an hour.

Water situation was not good. I loved having random water stations in the middle of the fields. Finish a set, have a water. Not this time. Needs to change. Merch situation was terrible. We got there at doors on Sunday and did not beat the mad dash to the tent. Glad I picked this year to forget to get a locker. That was a clusterquack. Did not like the tax added as opposed to included in previous years. I guess they can still say "water only two bucks." No complaints otherwise. My 12th and still as good as ever.
In 2006 both Madonna (in the dance tent) and DAFT PUNK were late adds.
As were Kanye West and Massive Attack. But that was a really weird year, that's the year psychicfriend released the lineup on the message boards before the poster was even out since it was so delayed (I think)

The trick I have always used for water is to hit the Outdoor Theatre refill. The lines are so short and water pressure is so high that you can easily walk there and back in the time it would take to wait at some of the busier stations. Same experience this year. Grain of salt, I’m a Sonora/Gobi/Mojave rat, so it’s an easy daytime walk for me.
The Outdoor Theatre restroom area also used to have the trailer bathrooms at the back, but that changed this year.

Massive was similar to Daft and they were added on there within a week of it dropping. Those 2 were def not what Madonna and Kanye were when they were announced in late march and early april.
Trailer bathrooms were pretty limited and some were locked on friday.
And yesterday the guards didnt care about having empty water bottles when walking in so that was nice.
Did anyone see DJ Koze? If so, how was he? Haven't heard much there and that was my Billie Eilish alternative plan.
I enjoy Billie’s studio work, but I think Koze is the way to go. Watched the beginning of Billie’s set and left after a couple songs. Wasn’t bad, but maybe just hard to pull off some of production in a live setting in a way I would enjoy.
Floating Points b2b DJ Koze would have been my move if I did it again. And maybe a brief dance break for spicy pie and checking out a bit of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu next door.
They made a bunch of really stupid decisions that are ridiculous individually and unforgiveable collectively.
- Eliminated all the mobile vendor stations that used to sell water/gatorade/power drinks and were all over the field in past years
- Replaced those with bullshit $12 lemonade stands and other high price drinks and did not allow those vendors to sell water in addition to the high priced bullshit
- Reduced the number of water refill stations
- Did not put the big signs identifying the few water refill stations
- Water refill stations were either not working or barely working a good amount of time
One of the best things about this festival has been the logistical efficiency and the wide availability and easy access to $2 water bottles. You never had to walk more than a minute or two to a water vendor no matter where you were. They did it consistently for a long time and it ruled, and in 90+ degree heat, it's essential.
Forcing you to go and find food vendors with long lines just to buy water, when lots of food vendors didn't carry water and many were hit and miss, was bullshit. Or having to go wait in beer lines to buy water, or actually spend 15-20 minutes searching to try and figure out where you could actually get water, was a giant pile of shit for people who never had to do that in the past and just wandered 50 yards in any direction and there was a water vendor.
Whether the motive was profit or they didn't want to deal with the logistics of delivering water to all the field vendors...I don't care what it was, but it's fucking stupid. And we already know they're well capable of delivering a good system because they've done it forever.
Just inexplicable and dumb and made the entire festival shittier having to deal with that issue. I'm sure there are some first timers who don't know any better and thought it was fine but it's a massive step in the wrong direction compared to what they've done in the past and a shitty indicator of where they're heading if they made a conscious decision to shaft people to sell fucking lemonades.

I saw Koze, it was sublime. Important to know that his sets aren’t disco bangers, they’re much vibier and subtle. Fantastic, but I wouldn’t call it high energy

So I ended up only seeing Carly Rae for the first 4 songs then catching all of The Marias.. The Marias might have been my favorites of the entire weekend, they sounded fantastic live I can't believe I missed Utada Hikaru for 88 Rising's set. Massive Utada fan and had no idea she was showing up because I'm not super active on social media =(
Overall a very solid Coachella! It didn't have the highest highs of all the Coachellas I've been to, but it didn't have any low lows either. I didn't go to a set that I didn't at least enjoy. I feel like each year, the Main and Outdoor crowds are less and less into it, not much dancing etc. For example: Maggie brought it just as hard as 2019, but the crowd energy on the Main didn't nearly match 2019 in the Gobi so it didn't feel as electric, overall. Although the outside stages had bigger crowds than recent years. Everyone I saw in a tent had super active crowds. I did notice that the sound systems at every stage sounded excellent and much improved. Sets were mostly clean. Only saw one set start late (other than SHM but I didn't care for them to begin with). Set up times were much quicker too. Wind messed with my allergies this year but it is what it is. This weekend went by super fast
No order but my favorite sets: The Marias, Denzel Curry, Jean Dawson, Nulifer Yanya, Japanese Breakfast, Turnstile, BROCKHAMPTON, Maggie Rodgers, Mannequin Pussy, Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion (I really enjoyed more, but these stuck out the most)
Sets I unfortunately missed that I wanted to see:Snoh Aalegra, 88 Rising, Mariah The Scientist, Purple Disco Machine, Isaiah Rashad, Emotional Oranges, Crumb, Vince Staples, Chicano Batman, Jessie Reyes
Billie Eilish alluded to this on Saturday during her performance too. She did in 2019 as well. I don't think it's a status thing as to why a lot of the crowds don't dance or jump around much though. I honestly feel like Coachella is just a bit "much" or draining for people who aren't used it. Everyone on their first Coachella at the camp grounds just seemed really dead all weekend. The heat, dust, walking, long days etc. they don't feel like they have a ton of energy to give out there. At least that's what it seems like to me. Energy conservation. Just being able to stay out the whole day/night is a lot for some people.
excited to be seeing some of my missed acts in the next couple months, slowthai, Hot Chip, PUP, Freddie Gibbs, Disclosure, perhaps some others at Primavera. RTJ, Gizz, Japanese Breakfast at boston calling
