Great day today. Highlights were demeanor, joy oladokun, and Andrew bird's busking set. Was a little disappointed with Margo price and randy Newman, both sets seemed phoned in. But the worst had to be Isbell. Don't get me wrong, he sounded great, but literally no special guests and nothing unexpected. Still had a great day, but hoping tomorrow will bring something a little more special
Grace Potter - Fabtastic, definitely had the right energy for kicking off a day of Newport Yasmin Williams - She was fantastic. I can easily not get into an instrumental set even if they’re obviously talented, so thankfully she was awesome and I was open to it today. Phosphorescent - Good. Considering everyone seems to be doing the stripped down thing this year they did it better than most. The piano definitely helped. Nothing amazing but a decent set. Andrew & Jimbo busking set - Good, though I still dislike the setup Joy Oladokun - She was great. Charming, funny, open with her issues, and great musician. Randy Newman - I hadn’t seen him before but it didn’t seem phones in to me. Gf and I thoroughly enjoyed his set. Andrew Bird & Jimbo full set - I absolutely love everything Andrew Bird and this set was a prime example why. Also the only set we saw today with a guest (Margo) and with a Prine song (Angel From Montgomery w/ Margo). Isbell - Absolutely phoned in. Referenced Prine and Highwomen but no Prine song, not a single collaboration despite Margo and Natalie both being there.
I think the Jim James award can be won by anyone who joins just 3 sets this weekend.
There were a lot of great sets this weekend and I’m not at all regretting coming, but the “folk family” aspect is certainly absent. The newbies/outsiders have outperformed the “regulars” in just about every way.
Also, some stripped down sets would be great but we didn’t see a single set with drums all day and it was noticeably lacking.

I agree with most of this. It was a great day and I enjoyed it a lot. Grace and Joy were fantastic. The Andrew and Jimbo busking set was great to see. I only disagree about Randy. I think Randy did a good job. The guy was hilarious.

Honestly, my favorite set of the day was Natalie Hemby.
Her band was super tight. Her songs were catchy. And her banter was fun and gracious.
Her songs on Spotify didn’t quite catch me, but live they were great.
I again was disappointed that she didn’t pull a guest on stage. Amanda Shires of Jason Isbell, or Yola wouldve been easy guests. Especially since she did a Highwomen song.
Personally I though Phosphorescent was lame. I really like him/them but there are ways to do a stripped down set and make it fun. Everything was just slow and boring. Even his fun songs.
Also, I’m super disappointed in the beer garden situations. It’s already frustrating enough that I can’t responsibly sip a beer in my chair while I watch music. But to be totally relegated to a crowded pen, that is the furthest place from any of the music sucks! At least the beer pier had the allure of being out on the water. And the quad beer garden was a least in decent position to still be part of the music at the quad. It feels like if I want to enjoy a beer, I have to sacrifice seeing or even hearing any music.
Regardless, we are having a great time and looking forward to a more stacked day tomorrow!

Hey dude if you’ve got a private plot of land that could comfortably host NFF, free of the various encumbrances that come along with using a state park, then offer it up and we’ll all drink beer wherever we please.
"You look like you're listening to every note." - Lady to me during LCD's "final" show 2023: Mar 29 - Guster Apr 6 - Postmodern Jukebox Apr 26 - Father John Misty May 14 - Taylor Swift (Philly) May 17 - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss July 12 - moe. July 16 - CAKE (Portland, ME) July 28-30 - Newport Folk (#12!) Dec 8-9 - Goosemas!
Getting real antsy about no weekday schedule yet. Wonder what the hold up is.
Was thinking yesterday that they may hold off until after tonight because they may want to squeeze in an act or two that could get bumped for weather today
Does anyone know why they never order enough merch? Like everything was sold out by saturday afternoon. For a festival on a tight budget, you'd think they'd want to sell as much stuff as possible. Surely by now they've realized they under order, this happens every year!

This is one of my biggest issues anytime they bring up any type of fundraising or cost issues. They constantly have a huge demand that is unmet. Hell, even on the website they are all too often sold out of plenty of items and seem to not care to change to a supplier that can fulfill on demand rather than the foundation needing to have inventory on hand. Most of the stuff at the merch tent this year wasn’t even 2021 specific, rather just generic NFF shirts and whatnot
Yeah I was kinda thinking it wouldn't get posted until midday Sunday or even Monday morning
I’m fairly certain that they promised that it would be released before the end of the week. Sunday or Monday would be less head’s up than given to those attending the Weekend. My guess is it’ll drop tonight after the first day is in the books with a comment like “What a great first day back at the Fort. Thank you to everyone who made it possible. For those attending the Weekday event, here’s your schedule to give you something to look forward to.” Also can help eliminate messaging miscommunication by dropping it at the end of the day rather than during or before a day of the weekend event.
Damn. Eating my own words on this bad prediction. But it is a nuisance that Newport has put off the weekday schedule for this long.

Rumor of something w Brandi and Chaka Khan after Rateliff. Logistically Doesn't make much sense, but They do know each other from the Joni Mitchell jam sessions...

The more I think about it this could just be referring to their appearance in the Russell set? 🤷♀️

Brandis golden mic is here for the Russell set so that’s likely the case

Unsold festival merch isn’t a lot of fun to get rid of
