Can’t say I’ve ever seen this many high school age kids crowd the front of the stage at Folk Fest as there are for Bleachers.
Makes sense to me. I don’t understand the “let’s book bleachers for Newport” thought, but here we are
It was a great booking. Their new album is very much influenced by Bruce Springsteen. Between the horns and piano and acoustic guitar, he fit in perfectly. He even explained that he often writes songs in the style of folk music before adding in all of the production and then listening to it, it made perfect sense. They were unrehearsed and raw, but he understood what it meant to play here and embraced it like Passenger did a few years back.

Yesterday may have been my favorite day at Folk Fest yet.
But today is noticeably subdued and probably more similar to what many of the weekenders were talking about. Most acts came without a band. Some unrehearsed. Few collaborations. I had trouble getting into the groove at any point even though some of my favorite acts were booked today. As I mentioned earlier, I really enjoyed Bleachers, but they’d have fit in much better in a normal year where their raw, stripped down performance would have been a one off rather than the entire day.
Still have Bonny Light Horseman and Beck to change my mind, but I’m assuming both will be very similar.
(That said, in addition to Bleachers, I thought Allison Russell was great. If the headliner set didn’t cement her status as Newport royalty, her second set today did. She came with a full band and delivered.)

Vagabon and Fred Armisen both ended their sets really early, too. And they're short sets to begin with.
Langhorne killed it, though. Awesome set as usual from him even though it was also stripped down a bit and just him, bass, and banjo/fiddle doing mostly songs from the new album they all recorded together.

Yeah. Sunday and Monday were great... today most feels like Friday and Saturday.
Speaking of mailed in sets from the weekend... this Beck set so far...
Does mailed in just means “didn’t do what i wanted them to do” to y’all?
It means throwing on a random bossa nova drumbeat that does not match the tempo and beat of the song when pre-recording a drumbeat or just leaving the song acoustic are options.
*things like this can be fun for a song or two, and I’m grateful Beck was able to play even knowing he was only called a few weeks back… he loves the festival… but a whole set of things like this is another story
Had the weekend ended up with Night Sweats, they’d have had a better trio of headliners in hindsight.

I think many people have quickly forgotten that we still are in a pandemic, we are still dealing with many performers who have not been performing, have been going through a ton of shit, and we need to support them. And no, I’m not a mark for Jay Sweet.
I have not seen a bad set at this festival. I’ve certainly enjoyed some more than others. In my opinion, The one thing that has been proven false this year is this long-held belief that the people that go to Newport are the good people when a lot of them are the same shitbirds who bitch and complain about everything wherever they have an outlet. It’s like we came out of this past year and a half as a bunch of curmudgeons who are never satisfied with whatever is put in front of us. I really hope it stops because the attitude of the attendees (not the performances) is bumming me the fuck out.
Beck rocked.
Let’s talk about the important stuff - why the fuck did almost every band on the quad end 20 mins early? Why does it take 30 mins to set up a single person w an acoustic guitar? Why was there not a busking stage on the quad? Why are the food options so incredibly limited?
Any rumors or talk about tomorrow's To Be Announced?
I have heard a rumor, and I'll leave it as a surprise for the festival to announce, but it is quite an exciting one and not to be missed (at least for me.) Wish I was going
I will say this, it is a group that was invited back from last years canceled festival

So only voice complaints about approved subjects? Got it.
