I may have misunderstood but I thought they essentially dropped npr so they could begin their own subscription streaming service which has been taking way to long to implement. I thought there was a link for streaming that had a coming soon banner on Newports website but it’s gone now.
I think the note at the bottom of this page is what you’re referring to.

Just listened to the last episode of Festival Circuit and it was great. One interesting nugget was that Allison Russell's collaboration set was a result of an artist cancelling with less than a month to go. The artist was also referred to as "somebody", so maybe it was a solo act rather than a band. Anybody have any guesses? I heard that Allison's set was killer, but the fact that she put it together within 3 weeks is crazy. She really stepped up to the plate.
Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine have released two more songs, “Back to Oz” and “Fictional California,” from their upcoming collaborative album, A Beginner’s Mind, out September 24th via Asthmatic Kitty.
The entire album features songs that were roughly inspired by the movies Stevens and De Augustine watched while working on music at a friend’s cabin in upstate New York. “Back to Oz,” for instance, draws inspiration not from The Wizard of Oz, but the 1985 dark fantasy follow-up, Return to Oz; meanwhile, “Fictional California” takes its inspiration from a somewhat unlikely source — the 2004 direct-to-video cheerleading comedy, Bring It On Again
I did that membership survey a few weeks back. For recommendations I suggested promoting Billy Strings to the main stage. I'm sure they didn't need me to suggest the obvious though. Listened to this a lot since Newport. Great song.
(Lest you thought Carlile’s side project slate was clean for a change, she and Taupin are talking collaboration. They’ve already written three songs together, his words and her music. “I played ’em for Elton recently, too,” Carlile said. “He loved ’em. He’s like, ‘They’re so weird!’ I’m like, ‘I know!’”)

That's cool she's working with Taupin. I also read that she produced the new Lucius album, which I'm guessing will be coming next year at some point.

And she wants to be the new singer for Soundgarden. As a fan of both I don’t think I want that.

I really don't know where she gets her energy. She seems to have some new project going on all the time. The first time I saw her at Newport was 2015 and i remember her saying how much she loved Newport. She said she wanted to go every year. When she wasn't at 2016 I thought it was just an offhand remard. Guess she really meant it. Can't deny she's been behind some epic sets in recent years. This was first year in a while she wasn't the Jim James award winner. Speaking of. I wonder who was the Jim James winner this year? Allison Russell maybe?
Edit: I'm guilty of mostly knowing Elton's radio played hits so am happy to discover this gem. Impressive performance on Stern with the twins and strings. I'm afraid to dare hope for an Elton appearance at NFF next year but the dates keep the dream alive.
So excited to see The Felice Brothers play the little bar right around the corner from me on Friday! It's not everyday where you can walk down the street to hear a Newport favorite. Saw Lucy Dacus this last week. She was one of my favs at Newport. Next month travelling a couple of hours to Pittsburgh to catch Kevin Morby and Hamilton Leithauser. God how I have missed you live music.

This current felice tour and new album release has been fantastic. Enjoy the show....they've been on a roll lately

Newport announced some new artist grants today and one of the recipients is Durand Jones. So I would expect him and the Indications to be aboard for next year. Plus, they were announced for FloydFest next year, which is the week after NFF. Sierra Ferrell and Neal Francis, who already seemed likely for next year, were announced for FloydFest too.

Only conflict for Neal, may be that he’s playing Martha’s Vineyard in August.
But yeah. Durand and Aaron would be great as well. All these would be great.

Buck Meek show on Wednesday was seriously great. The opener was very good as well - Kidi Band. They had a really impressive, unconventional rhythm to their songs. Seeing Parquet Courts tonight and just got my Waxahatchee tickets for February. Live shows have been getting better and better.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

I haven't pulled the trigger yet on the Big Thief show at the Anthem, but I don't think I should miss that one. Definitely hoping for some Big Thief/Buck at the fort next year.
Unrelated, I'm digging the new Nathaniel Rateliff album. I wasn't big on the first single, but I think the album is solid.
