I'm in that age range but don't actually live in NY anymore and am here reading/commenting as an impartial party. Mostly impartial - I'm from the area originally and many of my formative concert/fest experiences were at Randalls (RIP Downing Stadium).
I'm in Manhattan now (born & raised in Queens). Almost 35. Maybe my geography knowledge is wrong, but Asbury Park just seems like such a pain in the ass to get to without a car. This Bridgeport festival on the other hand could be a pretty do-able commute, just taking the metro north from Grand Central to Bridgeport.
Asbury Park isn't complicated to get to - two NJ Transit trains, the second of which leaves right across the Long Branch platform from the first - but it does take something close to two hours, which is a pain if you're doing it daily (I think popartist did this last year). Having a car does make it a lot easier. But, if you were going to go, I'd recommend staying in the area for the weekend. We got an AirBnB in Red Bank, drove down there, and then either took the train or Ubered the much shorter distance to and from the festival.
Out of curiosity, for those posting here is everyone between the ages of 25-45 and live in the actual city limits or do we have any suburban folks? My speculation is that people within the 5 boroughs generally don't have cars so the idea of having to travel out to a spot in LI/NJ/CT is a huge hurdle to cross but there are perhaps enough festival transplants in the suburbs at this point which is why you've seen the likes of Sea Hear Now and that new festival in Bridgeport pop up.
29 live in Brooklyn. Asbury isn’t hard to get to but I backed out of Pearl Jam day last minute because it’s still a real commute. Bridgeport has that same barrier.
I’m from LI and can say it just wouldn’t work for the most part. Only exception is you could host a great 1 day 20k alt rock / emo fest at Jones Beach in the amphitheater/Parking lot stages.

Jersey is the best bet for any of this stuff.
They did do the Dysfunctional Family Picnic 8 in 2004 at Jones Beach where they had like a single stage in the back in the morning w emo and punk bands and then headliners on the main amphitheater stage…and it was such an awesomelineup… Beastie Boys Cypress Hill The Darkness Story of the Year Taking Back Sunday Midtown Vertigo Blue Jay-Z Brand New New Found Glory Yeah Yeah Yeahs The Strokes

Asbury Park is a royal pain without a car, it's a tolerable single day, but it was hard commuting from the city on back to back days. I got home the first night after 2am, I left before Smashing Pumpkins on night 2 because I was beat! Bridgeport is actually an easier trip, I think. If I went to Sea.Hear.Now again, I would overnight in town or near the station of a nearby town (i.e no farther than Red Bank).

Back in the day Superfly tried to run a northeast Bonnaroo in Long Island but it totally blew up right before it was supposed to happen and never got off the ground.

It's a rough market.

It was legit. It was old school Bonnaroo - Dead, Petty, Dylan.... DMB maybe?

Yeah I've done that AP trip for Bamboozle in 2012 and it was brutal (and THAT was 3 days). I guess it must be like if someone who lived in LA drove out and back from Coachella each day. The train is convenient enough (if long) but it's still a 20 min walk to the boardwalk from there.

Here’s an article about it. They also mention Field Day Festival which I had tickets for. It was an epic lineup and I still think about it all the time.

God damn that Field Day lineup was so great
Soooo sick!!!! Every once in a while my buddy will text this poster to me with a sad face emoji. We came so close to seeing Elliott Smith. I was heartbroken.
MMJ > Interpol > Spiritualized > Underworld > Beck > Radiohead is an ok day but I'd rather stand on the asphalt in the Citi Field parking lot and camp for J Cole

Can't remember if I actually had a ticket to the original but I remember they cobbled together a one day fest at Giants Stadium after the fest fell apart, full Radiohead set, shorter Beck set but it turned out to be a good day.

Yeah, I remember. I opted for the refund because they cut the lineup in half. There were a lot of bands I wanted to see that got axed. I can’t remember which ones now. So in retrospect I should’ve just gone to Giant Stadium and seen Elliott Smith, Beastie Boys, Radiohead and Beck. Haha!!!

As someone who went to every DFP, I can confirm that this one was the POOREST selling, funny enough. The one that everyone went apeshit for was in 2002: System Of A Down, Korn, Incubus, P.O.D, Papa Roach, Jimmy Eat World, Hoobastank, The Strokes and New Found Glory. Funny enough, The Strokes were one of the earliest bands playing.
It's a shame that all of Jay Z's aggressive forays into rock seem a bit lost to time. He was definitely on some rock type packages back in the day, there was the Phish sit-in, the album with Linkin Park.
I know he's a billionaire and married to Beyonce, but Machine Gun Kelly having the rock acceptance he so badly craved must sting a little.

HA I was also at both of these (and the one in 2001). It was crazy how much they were struggling with DFP 8 sales, considering the emo scene and the garage rock scene were both at their absolute peaks and the lineup had all the heavy hitters. And on top of that the return of Beastie Boys. I remember we bought tickets in a not amazing section for like $100 each, and then the week of the show they were selling every available ticket for $25.
DFP 6 in 2002 was a huge reality check for 15 year old me, as I was obsessed with New Found Glory and The Strokes and just assumed they were gonna be the late night headlining sets. They end up playing at the beginning of the day and most of the crowd around me were booing them haha

For whatever reason, I had the most fun at the 2001 DFP which is the one that's probably aged the poorest outside of the 3 headlines of Jane's Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots and Blink-182. The supporting cast consisted entirely of hard rock/nu metal (Staind, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Disturbed, 3 Doors Down Down, Adema) with LP being the only band I'd still go see today if Chester hadn't passed.

Yes I remember it selling poorly but still having a great time…DFP 6 was incredible as well though to my high school aged self

Looking at this Gov Ball lineup makes me nostalgic for All Points West 2009: Tool, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Fleet Foxes, Elbow, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, The National, The Black Keys, Lykke Li, MGMT, Silversun Pickups, St. Vincent, Tokyo Police Club, La Roux, We Are Scientists, Chairlift, Cage The Elephant, White Rabbits (and more). Crazy how stacked that lineup now seems and how poorly it sold.
