MMJ > Interpol > Spiritualized > Underworld > Beck > Radiohead is an ok day but I'd rather stand on the asphalt in the Citi Field parking lot and camp for J Cole
Looking at this Gov Ball lineup makes me nostalgic for All Points West 2009: Tool, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Fleet Foxes, Elbow, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, The National, The Black Keys, Lykke Li, MGMT, Silversun Pickups, St. Vincent, Tokyo Police Club, La Roux, We Are Scientists, Chairlift, Cage The Elephant, White Rabbits (and more). Crazy how stacked that lineup now seems and how poorly it sold.
I definitely don't want to oversimplify, but I did have the thought when I rattled off the Field Day names that it seemed very white and male. And even the APW one has nowhere near the diversity of today's lineups. OBVIOUSLY there are other factors at play, but it definitely wasn't super scalable to run these big 3-day fests with a narrow focus. (Yes, the Jay-Z day at APW mixed things up a bit.)

The Liberty State Park location had a lot to do with the poor turnout, I think. For one thing, people in NYC have a general aversion to crossing the Hudson - I used to live in Hoboken way back when I first moved to the area and it was still an affordable alternative to the city, and getting people to come visit was well nigh impossible, even though they'd take a much longer train ride to visit someone in one of the five boros.
On top of that, because it was a state park, it had that whole rule about beer sales only being in one section of the grounds, away from the stages, right?
And finally, if I remember right, there was pretty bad weather that weekend - I seem to remember a friend of mine talking about coming home muddy up to the knees.

I went to the tool day.. I think beastie boys were supposed to play the first day but mca got cancer so jayz replaced them... Also MBV opened for tool which was fucking weird
Also, the drink ticket thing was wack as hell.. basically you were allowed to buy a certain amount of drinks and when you ran out of tickets you'd have to try and get more from other people of you wanted to continue drinking
I made a point not to booze at that festival so the drink thing didn't bother me but, in retrospect, that'd be annoying. I think I heard that everyone got 5 drink tickets which, not to sound like an alcoholic, but 5 drinks spread out over 8-9 hours is actually not that much to maintain a buzz. The park was beautiful but Jorge is right that it was a huge pain in the ass to get to from the city as well as almost everywhere else since there was limited parking and people had to rely on the light rail. Even when Radiohead did two nights in 2008, I believe ticket sales were soft for all but one night.

That was a great fest, I went both years as well! Hadn't thought about how it sold at the time although upon reflection I do remember it being pretty spacious so yeah I can see that. Another fest for which I think mud dealt the final death blow to the fest and to concerts at LSP in general.
11/28 Raveonettes (Copenhagen, Denmark) 12/4 Interpol 12/14 LCD Soundsystem 12/31 Billy Joel 1/25 The Killers (Las Vegas) 2/12 Jack White 2/25 Father John Misty 3/6 Inhaler 4/10 Franz Ferdinand 4/17 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds 5/15 Amyl & the Sniffers 5/18 Fontaines D.C. 9/1 Oasis
The overlapping set times make this even less desirable to go to than it already was. Also, interesting that they got rid of a full stage and now it's only 3 stages.
Schedule is out. Still underwhelmed by this lineup but I may hit Sunday if I can find a decent deal.
Soccer Mommy > 100 gecs > Clairo > Japanese Breakfast > Glass Animals > Kaytranada is a very solid run, although some of those briefly overlap.
I finally bit the bullet and bought a Sunday pass. Pretty much for the run you listed above. Will probably check out J. Cole as well. Was hoping they would dip in price on stub hub, but Sunday seems to be the only one that still above list price, and by a lot.

I'll be there all 3 days this weekend. Saturday is the biggest question mark because the lineup is so boring! But looking forward to seeing Flume because I missed him at Coachella this year.

Denzel Curry and Flume are the obvious musts. Ashnikko is okay and YG would be fun if he does FDT. also DEHD is pretty good. Lil Wayne also replaced Migos

"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is, never get involved in a land war in Asia. But only slightly less well-known is this: Never book Lil Wayne for a music festival appearance in New York City! Hahahahaha! Hahahahaha! Hahaha!" *dies*

i have to say, I admire GovBall’s hustle, here. They could have totally taken the L, but they got somebody in there about as last minute as you can. I talk a lot about how this festival is officially Not For Me any more, but I do appreciate that they at least seem to give a shit.

Nah this festival whored out and sold their soul the the devil in a way that no other major US festival has even managed too. Russell and Wolowitz can go kick rocks.
Also they knew this was an insanely likely possibility when they did it but also knew announcing Lil Wayne would create a small ticket sale pop late in the game.
*edit: saw your Gov Ball history recap on the reddit and it's a perfectly written summary of what's happened so I'm preaching to the choir here I know.

will say last year was a lot of fun because they booked quite a few Actual Decent Acts but this lineup is just garbage

Big slot to fill out. I wonder if they just leave it open. Or shift someone in that's already on the lineup. Not sure they'd add someone new at this point
Edit:. Oops, wrong thread. Thought this was about roo

If I have any FOMO from spending my first GovBall totally on the sidelines in eight years, it’s knowing that a festival headliner crowd was vibing hard to “Running Up That Hill” in the year two thousand and twenty-two. Nice one by Halsey.
Is phone theft just par for the course at mainstream festivals now or is this unique to NYC?
nyc its worst because gov ball is the most accessable to thieves but supposedly it was bad at primavera as well. Barcelona is also known for pick pocketing

Ah interesting. I'm curious as to what makes the NYC festival more accessible as it's still a fairly pricey ticket but I guess you can spend $120 and steal 30-40 phones to make up for it.

yea i would say mainly the latter part is what makes it a big target. also bc it has a lot of teens and young adults who may be going to their first festivals and and arent super aware of their surroundings. its also easily accessible via metro
