Headliners are big step up from 2021 (Kendrick > J Cole, Lizzo > Hasley, Odesza = Cudi IMO) and undercard is fine. Overall overperformed my expectations, like most of the other lineups from last week, which is good for the festival circuit as a whole I guess.
Sooo interesting to see how Boston Calling has moved so hard towards rock while Gov Ball is now so rap/EDM heavy. I guess there just wasn't a market for two larger, multigenre fests in the northeast and they both decided to lock-down separate specialties.

Woof each year goes further and further away from my interests. I'd imagine now that Founders has Sound on Sound in CT that they just save all their alt rock/indie/legacy acts for that.
Better than Citi Field for most people I know. The 7 train sucks, the train cars are tiny and you have more options of trains in Corona park.
Citifield is in flushing meadow park though. Same 7 train
The move to Flushing Meadows is the biggest win of this whole thing for the festival. Like, with Central Park and Prospect Park off the table (the city will never do a multi-day event in the former, and the latter got trashed so hard by the Great GoogaMooga that any festival there would be a near-impossible sell), this is pretty much the next best option. Sure, it's not as central as Randall's, but it's arguably easier to get to given the train situation/lack of need to hike over a bridge, and unlike with Randall's, they can do what most city festivals do in the event of bad weather and just temporarily shut down while things pass rather than having to move the entire crowd off an island and close for the day. Given GovBall's history with inclement weather, that's a huge plus.

Yeah, there was an interview when they first announced SoS in which the Founders guys said their target demo for this festival starts at, like, 12 or 13. Not a lot of those kids are listening to alt rock/indie.
Wasn't Flushing Meadows where Panorama Fest was intended to be but they had to go to Randalls instead? Wonder what changed the park's permission. The Paul Simon concert a few years ago maybe?

I’m really curious to see how this gets laid out. As big as the park is, there aren’t many great spots to hold a 40-50k crowd at one stage like govball has moved towards in recent years. Because of the trees there’s also not a ton of completely clear fields either.
Randall’s island has a lot of faults but the topography worked well, this doesn’t as much.

Googamooga was a weird one. Didn't feel like there were enough people there to do as much damage as they did... It was rainy though

It's a long story:
- GoldenVoice wants to launch Panorama as a June festival in Corona Park, directly undercutting/challenging GovBall in the NYC market. - GovBall, correctly, sees this as an existential threat and, in an effort to ward it off, also puts in for a festival at the park (this would become The Meadows). - MSG Entertainment, also not wanting GoldenVoice making big inroads over here, also applies for a permit for the same park, in a sort of "flood the zone with shit" move. - It works. The city is all, "Listen, this is a very heavily-used park, we're not going to greenlight multiple multi-day events there, everybody back off." - Panorama moves to Randall's in July and fails in three years. - The Meadows moves to Citi Field and fails in two years. - GovBall perseveres and also is partially bought by LiveNation, giving them more muscle than Founders would have had on their own. - Years pass. Concerts happen at Flushing Meadows. GovBall keeps trying, but is told they can't do a three-day event there, and so can't make it work because they need the full thing to turn a profit. - Eric Adams is elected mayor, and his approach to things like this is very different than that of the previous administration. - My *guess* is that the fact that GovBall is now the only major festival game in town and that MSG isn't trying to ward off AEG made the field more open for negotiations. The city only has to deal with one promoter, and that promoter has LiveNation money behind it.

There was also that 2 day festival in Flushing Meadow Park last year. I forget the name of it, but it was headlined by Missy Elliot and Anderson Paak. Couldve been a test by the city to see if a larger scale festival there could be feasible.
I didnt go to that fest but I did go to that free Action Bronson show there last June. The field his stage was on was massive, and I was totally envisioning how Govball could work there.

Oh wait I take that back. I just tried searching that festival and it looks like it got cancelled less than a month before showday and there's accusations of it being a scam lol

Very solid for Gov Ball and the best, imo, since the 2020 edition that never happened. Each day has a bunch for me to enjoy; even though Saturday's the lightest, might fuck around and do the weekend especially if the weather cooperates
$99 daily tickets available for this via the LN promotion.
Can't be good news from a sales standpoint. I feel like, by this point in the cycle pre-pandemic, we'd usually have received a low ticket warning for at least one of the days.
If sales aren't great this year, I'd have to imagine it's not good for GovBall's viability moving forward. What could they do to move that needle? They've fixed their location problem, have pivoted to pop and hip-hop just about as hard as they can, and the names at the top of the poster are pretty solid this time around. Maybe NYC is no longer viable as a major festival market.

I love a lot of the bands / artists who are playing but they're scattered all over the weekend. I'd take a chance and go for them and discover everyone else, but it's more the scene that holds me back. Last time I went I felt like I was going to be kicked out for being too old or not someone's parent. If it was a bunch of Millenials and older with a scattering of Gen Z's, I could be down, but it was tooooooo many youthhhhhs. Which leads to a lot of them passing out from binge drinking, people running in with stretchers, general shitty behavior, etc, because they're all 14 - 20 years old.

i'm going on sunday, haven't seen kendrick this tour cycle and him plus pusha/black midi at $99 was the right price. i have very low expectations for the crowd and whatnot but hopefully it isn't too bad. we'll see!

crowd is def awful but if youre at a set like black midi youll experience less bros. i almost got in a fight at megan the stallion’s 2021 set with some white jock meathead wearing a native american headdress bc i called him an asshole for shoving me out of the way lol. anyways yea worst fest crowd ive ever experienced but it’ll be worth ur money for those 3 acts

Yeah, so, it's looking like I'm making a cameo appearance here for a couple sets on Friday (Haim and Lizzo) and for Kendrick on Sunday. A shadow of my former GovBall self, but better than nothing, I s'pose.
Ha – I’m doing the same. I’m in for Haim and Lizzo on Friday (after work), and I will be there on Sunday for Black Midi, Lil Nas X, Kendrick. On the fence about Pusha T or Sofi Tukker.

Gov Ball easily takes the cake for worst crowd at any fest I have been to.
2015. Future Islands. Great show, until I see a 24 oz. beer can come down from really high above and hit my sister in the head. She was crying as I led her out of the crowd, having to yell "MOVE" at people who wouldn't let us by.

Totally agree on worst crowd. The early years of the fest felt great, but as the fest got older, the crowd got younger and younger. It eventually just turned into Long Island kids being dropped off by their parents.
I also was at the 2015 performance, but it wasnt me for threw the beer can.

Last year I went some high school kid tried to bring a cantina of vodka past security and chugged it when they wouldn't let him in. Saw multiple kids being dragged along the ground by their friends passed out, not to mention the lines of children 20 deep holding hands forcing their way to the front of the crowd.

I mean, I've always been old for this festival - I was 38 when I went for the first time - but, yeah, there was a pivot point when it got dramatically younger. I think it started in 2016, maybe? I don't remember feeling dramatically old in 2014 or 2015 when I went, but it was definitely that way by 2017.
2012 to 14 was def older. I'd pretty much pregame roo with gov ball. After that I would just pick the day I liked the most and get in and out as fast as possible, or stay in the VIP pen until I wanted to see a show
