Up through 2018, though, it also felt like they were often booking almost parallel schedules - I remember that year in particular feeling like the crowd experience wasn’t that bad, then realizing it was because I was at all the underattended sets for old people (Gaslight Anthem opposite Travis Scott remains one of the best crowd vibes I’ve ever experienced at GovBall, even though there were, like, five of us there) while the younger-skewing acts drew most of the obnoxious kiddos.
So, if the air quality doesn’t get better by Friday, do they call the day?
I dont know how the artists are agreeing to this cause they gotta perform in those conditions. Why risk your voice.
Of course they'd say this right now. Why cancel before you have to? They'd say the same sort of "we're monitoring the situation" thing if thunderstorms were predicted.
Why would they cancel? I saw breathing outside for 24 hours is like smoking 6 cigs which isn’t healthy obviously but not exactly super dangerous
Air quality index is over 300 in parts of the city today; it's no joke out there. The official line is that even healthy people shouldn't be outdoors for extended periods of time without a mask or engaging in any real physical exertion, and we're talking about tens of thousands of people jumping around for, like, 5-10 hours. Plus, if I'm an artist I don't know that I'd want to be performing in all this.
I dunno. I'm a runner and generally pretty healthy, and when I went outside yesterday afternoon without a mask (before it got *really* bad), I couldn't stop coughing.
I also have to imagine there might be a legal element? Like, if someone developed some sort of bad respiratory situation because they held the festival in spite of conditions deemed hazardous by the weather service, could that expose them to a lawsuit in the same way it would if, say, they carried on during a thunderstorm and somebody was struck by lightning?
I guess we'll see. If it's like it was earlier yesterday, I could see them potentially soldiering on. But it was straight-up dark outside at 2 PM today. I can't imagine they'd go forward in that.

the west side of the country has been dealing with this for years and I can’t recall events being cancelled for it ever fwiw.
feels like some people just want the kids to have to go home without having fun
Nahhh. I'm not the target audience any more, but I'm still planning to drop by for a few sets, and I have enough love for GovBall as a whole that I don't wish bad things on them.
I think it's just hard to be optimistic when you look out your window mid-afternoon and it looks like Blade Runner 2049 and smells like burnt death. Fingers definitely crossed it all works out.

Nfl games have been moved due to wildfires before and concerts cancelled.

the NFL moved a game in San Diego when there was a fire literally in San Diego and the stadium was the evacuation center location lol seems pretty easy to discern the difference between that and a fire in another country hundreds of miles away. The Yankees literally just played a game during the air quality alert.

My bold prediction: If the AQI is under 150 tomorrow, it'll be a go. The rain that's coming through tomorrow afternoon/early evening is also supposed to help.
Looks like this weekend should be fine. Skies are clearing up by the hour, and so is the air quality.
Shame, would have kept the children away
LMAOOOOOO
I took my sister to one day of GB while she was living in NYC.
One of my favorite parts was after we got across the bridge and went to a McDonald's. Distinctly remember a guy saying something like, "Did they turn the whole fucking place into a PlayPlace?!?!?"

AQI is at 149 in Queens right now, and dropping. 100-150 is supposedly only harmful to “sensitive groups.” And we’re getting a front blowing through tomorrow afternoon that’s supposed to help more. And, at least based on what’s being said right now, the improvement is supposed to continue through the weekend.
I dunno. Obviously, yesterday was apocalyptic, but if tomorrow is markedly better than today, I could see people actually being pissed off if they *did* cancel.
Such a weird situation. I got miracled into a pass and so was planning to go tomorrow for Haim and Lizzo. I guess we’ll see how it shakes up - I also don’t mind wearing a KN95 for a few hours outside, but I’m weird that way.
