Okay but not every fest ends up being a top 5 weekend of the year. They can't all be special like Bonnaroo. Which I hope remains that way. I had a really good time at GovBall in '14 and '15, and now that place ain't what it used to be.
still kinda struggling to see how this really relates to or helps solve the astroworld stuff. If im not there it makes room for another asshole. We need to buy MORE tickets and make less available for assholes!
We should note that Astroworld was put on by a subsidiary of Live Nation, and it's not like all Live Nation-affiliated fests are run in the same manner.
I legit like your attitude. But you not buying a ticket doesn't mean that some other asshole is gonna buy it; the ticket could remain unsold. What would be even better than my earlier suggestion though, would be some type of grassroots campaign to upgrade concert etiquette and consideration for everybody.
Not every Live Nation fest is like my aforementioned examples. But ideally, we would indeed give them less money and support independent promotors. Though that's an entirely different conversation.
That's like saying; hey man, I'm gonna quit flying cause y'know, flying is kinda bad for the environment and things.
Nah, it’s like finding out that every McDonalds franchise in, say, Portugal, cuts food safety corners in order to increase profits and it resulted in 8-10 deaths. Then, declaring that you are putting your money where your mouth is and never going to eat at McDonalds Portugal again but will eat at the ones in the US.

Have you actually been to Live Nation festivals in Europe such as Lowlands or Rock Werchter that are run so much better than their American counterparts? Didn't think so.

was just messin around about tickets. Im just not letting the assholes take fests away from me. Sign me up for the grassroots festiquette campaign.
I really feel bad for having kicked off this whole discussion.
The lesson, as it is with most things, is that I'm an idiot and should generally keep my damn idiot mouth shut. Apologies to all involved.
Please don't apologize, your insights are valuable and spot-on in terms of etiquette changes across various demographics. Screw all the people here who cannot handle others' opinions and immediately resort to kneejerk bullshit.
Wow shocker, the murder-y dogwhistling boomer weirdo thinks the problem is those damn kids

I'll make an exception to responding regarding this lowlife from my blocklist.
This is somebody who instigated assholery while there was a discussion on this exact same topic (crowd etiquette at shows), and then cries like a little bitch when somebody dares stand up for themselves. Typical bully behavior.
I will not stand for that, and people like that can go fuck themselves.
Here's to all the genuine friendly people who want to make shows a safer and more fun place.

Didn’t think this was a hard analogy but I’ll explain it to you in more detail. Here, eating at McDonalds US is seeing Phoebe Bridgers at the Fillmore, and McDonalds Portugal is seeing her at a multi-genre festival that also books a bunch of black artists and attracts a “bad crowd.” The same people are getting rich off you either way

Lmao yeah man you’re really standing up for the oppressed or whatever.
What about love, guys? Maybe the answer here lies in our ability to love and respect each other as human beings navigating the harsh realities of our twisted, modern world.
I was there. The entitled air of people who feel that there's absolutely nothing wrong with cutting into pit lines, rushing in, etc. at Bonnaroo has long been a frustrator for me. I've called people out on it and had them literally just shrug and say that they didn't care. And what the fuck can you do about it as an attendee? There is nobody policing it and no recourse if someone just says 'fuck society' and does what they want.
I've mentioned it on past surveys (it happened in 2010 for sure and I feel like a different year as well) but until something happens I don't expect festival organizers to do anything about it.
One solution is to just stop attending and financially supporting the type of festivals that have a larger chance of attracting this type of crowd. Not a fun thing to think about, but at the end of the day we gotta put our money where our mouth is.
Or I can just choose to get a good spot behind the pit instead of engaging with that pit line BS. I know the deal there and can choose when that scene is worth the effort. Also, a lot of Roo acts seem less likely for this to be an issue, especially the Boomer/legacy acts that they the book.

"A bunch of black artists" 🤡
You're ignoring the fact that Live Nation lots of times only has a controlling interest in festivals and doesn't micromanage them. It's unfortunate that CEO Michael Rapino makes money off the well-run fests in Europe, but I'm okay with giving them my money since it also supports those in the industry that actually do a good job.

Are you kidding? Do you not remember the guy who died at the Billy Joel pit? He fell after losing the grip on his walker and it was just lights out for him. So sad.

Yeah, it does seem like less of an issue overall at Bonnaroo. But I love being front stage in the pit at fests and have been to enough shows where things are actually chill (such as recently at Pitchfork on the day that Phoebe headlined), and I'm sure many others do too.

I heard he tripped over some granny panties that were thrown towards the stage when his guitar tech played AC/DC.

For those interested, one of my favorite music podcasts Popcast did an episode on the Astroworld tragedy. It mostly focuses on the rage culture within hip-hop today and how it got there, from Beastie Boys to OFWGKTA to XXXTentacion and now Travis.
The balloons they released did get people to riot a bit. It was a great day though when this show happened. Lauryn Hill got added and she was on time! Biggest miracle! I snuck into the front pit after taking pics of Rage and felt nice to know I wasnt gonna get crushed by a legion of people.

So I’ve been oddly obsessed with this since I heard what happened. I think the reason I’m so intrigued (and I’m sure you guys can relate) is because I’ve been in crowds like this. I’ve been in crowds where I have no control over my movements and my feet aren’t on the ground, can’t catch my breath, stuck with my arm in the air Bc I can’t get it back down… but I’ve never been in a situation where people were trampled or had serious injuries, let alone died. Finding the point or the reason it turns into a deadly situation has become a def point of fascination for me.
I’ve seen everything from crowd surge, to bad layouts, and poorly placed barricades as the reason for it. And i can’t believe they left the show continue for 40 mins after they knew what was happening. But one thing that stands out to me are the reports of people who had fallen and other people just actively ignored them and stepped over them and kept raging. Like, the total lack of concert etiquette and watching out for those around you just astounds me. And I’m not talking about people on the other side who didn’t know what was happening. I’m talking about people who saw someone go down and STEPPED OVER OR ON THEM to move up a spot.
Anyways. There’s so much on IG & TikTok to consume on this. So many first hand accounts and they all sound traumatizing. Seannafaith on IG has been compiling stuff into a highlight on her page. She’s the girl in the video yelling at the cameraman for help. I got into a deep hole of profile hopping last night reading all the of stories.
Very very sad. Wonder if Travis will recover from this. I’ve seen he pulled out of his Vegas show but unknown if it was really his choice or not.
There was a YouTube video about how people get trampled that I watched a few months back, focused on the incident in Israel a while back. It could be on "today I learned"but I'm not sure. It was interesting
This was the layout of the front main stage area of Astroworld
It'd be good if once more info is known, somebody can make an animated video showing all the crowd pressure points given this stage setup, and where it exactly went wrong.

Even the barricade design seems very poor - wall between the soundbooths is a bad idea. From that picture it seems really hard to stand in the back without being way off to the side. So people will push forward, but also be pushing to the center walkway hard as well. And there's no way to relieve the pressure by walking backwards.

There is likely drone footage which we wont see for a while thatll show those pressure points. Almost every decently sized fest uses one to capture video for after movie stuff.
Was anyone here in the left side pit line for Kanye at Roo '14? My group and I waited in that line for quite some time. When they opened the pit, there was a contextually massive surge from indefensible assholes that were either never waiting in the line or were way back. That caused people that were doing the right thing and waiting forever to try to make damn sure they got their spot in the pit so they pushed forward. My youngest brother actually got pressed up against a barricade and couldn't move for a while and was not in a great spot. He may have been the only person that was in any sort of danger during that entire mini event. No idea. If he would have somehow died there, I probably would have blamed Bonnaroo a lot... but I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a significant amount of blame belonging to the feral animals that just blasted their way forward.
That story is such a small small thing. But I feel like that moment of excitement and anticipation causing young rowdy guys to break the rules to prioritize their show positioning isn't a brand new thing.
That was for a Kanye headlining show at Bonnaroo... which is a pretty big show and Kanye had a bit of a cult following at the time, but this Travis incident seems like it had so much going for it to be the Bonnaroo 2014 left side pit line multiplied by a million.
1. Travis Scott has that cult following 2. He glorifies extreme rowdiness (which is fine) 3. He glorifies rule breaking at shows 4. Crowd is young 5. Year of bottled up energy from covid 6. Yes Travis has played two other shows semi recently, but this was the Astroworld headlining set after 1.5 years of bogus covid life. The big return. 7. No Bonnaroo Pit system
Who would you say has been the most recent artist / band with a crowd as large, youthful and rowdy as Travis' crowds? I'm trying to think but I feel like you may have to go back 15-20 years. People aren't regularly in crowds this extreme and haven't been in a long time. And it does suck that Travis is the leader of this crowds and seems to have so little care for safety.
I don't have any major conclusions to draw just thinking and typing.
Tyler The Creator has an audience right in that zone. He also has his own festival. There have been moments of chaos at Tyler and Odd Future performances back in the day. Can we say that he created a culture similar to Travis? Sure. Does it have some extremes? Yeah. Did it ever reach this point? Not really.
2013 Camp Flog Gnaw had Kanye as the secret guest and the second he showed up people went crazy. I was on the side of the crowd and still got caught up in the sway of it. That iteration was still scaled down in comparison to the current version at Dodger Stadium but there was still that push and burst happening even with 10,000 people. People settled down and things kept going. Nobody was killing themselves over Frank Ocean either who closed out the evening.
the fire marshall at Flog Gnaw 2018 repeatedly got on the microphone after Post Malone and before KSG telling the crowd to back up or else the show wouldn't happen.
