imo Will Smith could've still stormed the stage, grabbed the mic, NOT hit chris rock, and instead expressed his love for his wife and his admiration for her bravery in the face of the beauty expectations hollywood puts on females. he defends his wife, everyone gushes about him on the internet, and chris rock feels like a dick for a mean joke.
i'd bet rock didn't know about jada's condition. i didn't. at the start of the ceremony i saw jada's head and thought "hell yeah you go jada, looking fierce af". i never even considered it was some kind of condition that prevented her from growing hair.
but really i agree with tЯist♡n that this is just some silly hollywood bullshit. no big harm done.

The fact that I was up at 1:30 am on a night where I usually "catch up on sleep" is enough to make me mad at Will.
But again, all of this in the face of what should've been a focus of historic night of firsts. Justice for Questlove and his tribute to his dad. Justice for the marginalized people who were able to win awards and have their platform on a global level last night. I know it's a high elite awards show at the end of the day, but it still matters to people (like the Super Bowl or Olympics must be to other people I guess).
talking about the actual ceremony, overall i wasn't super impressed. i'm typically a big defender of awards ceremonies and awards ceremonies hosts in particular. it's like critics expect the ceremony itself to be as entertaining or stimulating as the movies or tv they are celebrating? like it's a 3-4 hour ceremony of giving out awards. the whole point to watch is to see who won, see what people are wearing, and see a bunch of your favorite celebrities in the same room. like a significant chunk of that 3-4 hours is winners rattling off lists of people you don't know. expecting an awards ceremony to be some non-stop thrill ride is setting yourself up for disappointment.
but even i gotta admit this one was just kind of dull. not nearly as bad as the weird Soderbergh oscars last year, but still not particularly impressive. i did think all the hosts were funny and charming, particularly amy schumer. but that hollywood museum remote with wanda sykes was really dumb. the set looked impressive.
i'm more of a TV guy anyway. here's looking forward to the emmys.
Would've been crazy if Chris Rock hit him back and an all out brawl ensued lol. Feel bad for Chris honestly. The joke wasn't that out of pocket and there really was no good way for him to react to getting slapped like that

I think Chris handled it wonderfully, all things considered.

Thank god Jada had a big strong man to defend her.
Or maybe he wasn’t trying to defend her, but was just emotionally hijacked by the joke and lost his cool? Shit happens. Emotional intelligence can be a bitch sometimes.
He emphasized several times in his acceptance speech the importance of protecting people. He was 100% "defending" her. You know, from the evils of joking comedians.

Watched CODA this morning. That was not it, IMO. It was a sweet film with some great moments. I have seen 7/10 of the films now. So many more were better made films.
Also, many of the jokes going around this morning about the Will Smith incident are so naive about the idea of alternative/open/poly relationships. Booooooo
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Again, you know this is the kind of language abusive people typically use to defend their actions, right?
I think this is a weird take, there's zero evidence will has or would ever hit his kids or wife, if anything he's the punching bag of the family
I've hit and been hit by people over far less (and have also seen women hit men/women over less), and I haven't ever been in a situation where I want to hit my partner
no one's saying, wow Chris Rock said that out loud in front of X amount of people, I wonder how he talks to his wife behind closed doors, words have definitely hurt me more than fists at times and quite usually are what leads up to violent outbursts
I do agree w Lebatard the situation is different if its the Rock or something but that guy also has the tact/PR squad to not make poor taste jokes so it wouldn't get there
Fwiw, every MAGA person on my social media is supporting Will.
"I don't care who you are you don't make jokes about another man's wife or family. Good for Will."
Lots of people got roasted last night, none of their significant others got up and confronted the hosts or Chris.
But I guess that's a better take than the ones who are saying it was a conspiracy to save the Oscar ratings. Those people are so far gone and brainwashed at this point.

Life and human beings and emotion and the human condition are far more complicated than what we want to make them out to be.
Also. What time is it in California? I have a feeling the booze and cocaine are going to wear off in about, I’d estimate 2 more hours. Then we are going to hear from Will Smith. Kidding. Kind of.
