That was so, so touching. Making me cry again and it is only 830.
I kept watching it and crying too last night which is totally out of the ordinary for me. I'm empathetic in person, but internet stuff doesn't usually move me much. This one really got me for some reason
I do think picking on someone who's uncharacteristically bald is a dice roll between shaved head or disease, and to touch on what Zig was saying about the severity, and what postjack said about Rock not knowing, part of that diceroll is she could've had cancer and that is not dice worth rolling imo
People were starting to compare the joke to calling people slurs or making fun of disabilities. My point was simply that the content of that joke was at worst mildly insensitive and in no way that “edgy” when it comes to comedy or even award show humor.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

My favorite boomer take I’ve seen a few times now from local news comment sections on Facebook is “it wasn’t even an insult, GI Jane is a powerful soldier”.
These people have lived their entire lives this dense.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
4 days later I honestly didnt anticipate the blowback to be this bad. Wondering if Will's career is legitimately finished at this point.
idk, maybe, but even guys like Russell Crowe, who was out there getting in fights w regular schmucks in the middle of award runs still got lots of work
like Ezra Miller should be getting blacklisted quicker than Will
like roman Polanski won an Oscar while he was a fugitive of the state, the academy is already pretty separate art from artist
I think the big family blockbusters stop, he probably won't be invited back to the Oscars, he might elect to stop going to award shows that do let him in, but he's still such a mega star w his own production company, he'll still get work
like Bad Boys 4 could still happen imo, but he's probably not going to be in anymore Disney movies

I get what you're saying but imo the BIG difference is that millions of people saw Will's altercation happen live. Will's is also going to have a tangible consequence. He'll almost definitely be suspended or expelled from the Academy and I think after that, people aren't really gonna touch him. If he was in his 30s, I'd say he could wait it out ten years and slowly mount a comeback, but being in his 50s I think he's likely to just retire to being a social media personality like he's been doing.

i still think career-wise he'll be OK so long as he keeps his shit together and doesn't spin out over this. he's a huge star beloved by many. slapping chris rock at the oscars is very bad but it's not like he has a history of being abusive on set (that i'm aware of).

There's an old video circulating of him slapping a reporter, but not really the same thing.
Academy is milking this for all the publicity they can get. This is dominating news cycles and I’m sure they are secretly loving it. No one is talking about how they cut all the technical categories now. Bad look or not, press is press. I can definitely see more people tuning in next year now. Not by a lot but noticeably more.
I just read they asked him to leave and he refused? Honestly no sympathy for him at this point, he was clearly behaving like a toddler in more ways than one and then was essentially given a prize for it. Gross. Not a fan.
I think a more important difference between the Will Smith thing and the Alec Baldwin thing is that Chris Rock isn't dead
"On October 26, 1995, Baldwin allegedly assaulted a photographer for videotaping Basinger and their three-day-old daughter. The couple was returning from the hospital and was confronted by the photographer outside their Los Angeles home. Whoopi Goldberg praised Baldwin for his actions during her opening monologue while hosting the 68th Academy Awards."

I guess it's a good idea to read the thread before posting; I'd assumed it was the most recent thing

Sure, slapping someone isn't anywhere close to the same league as manslaughter, but the Rust shooting is still an open investigation, pending lawsuit, and probable trial. Only a handful of people know what happened, and even most of them seem to not really know. Whereas everyone either saw live or later on Twitter Will slap and curse out Chris. There's no confusion there.
The other element is that with the televised ceremony in danger of cancellation, the Academy really needs to save face from its inaction and mishandling of the incident. And a lot of Hollywood also after giving the man a standing ovation and letting him gaslight the entire audience with "the devil made me do it" excuse. So both of course are coming out strong against it. I think he's done.
It's hard for me to blame Baldwin for the shooting. It seems like the ballistics workers' fault. Baldwin has assaulted multiple photographers though afaik, and there is photographic evidence.
I think a suspension would be sufficient for Smith. He doesn't deserve to be in league with Weinstein, and there are others who have done worse who haven't been reprimanded by the Academy.

Couldn't agree more. Can we please focus on what really matters? Good lord.

CODA was amazing just finished that, I think it was pretty well deserved

If you read some of the overall reviews and such they def get into all that stuff. but nobody wants to read in depth analysis, they just want any celeb close to a mic giving their thoughts. The crazy thing is they handed out those 8 awards in just over 30 mins. That was supposed to save time on the telecast and yet they still went over 40 mins. So what gives. They need to look at the SAG awards and they can get this thing done in 2 1/2 hours even with musical performances spliced in. Have an opening monologue with somebody, have the same person introduce the song nominee performances and then close the show. Everyone once in a blue moon we'll have a nice moment like Gaga and Liza or like when the selfie happened with everyone, but that was a little more natural then trying to see if Jesse Plemons would laugh at his wife being told she was a seat filler.
