I was in the giant pit in front rightish-center and yeah… it was fun as fuck. Beach House into Godspeed was the dream ending to a great festival. Margaritas Podrías was a sleeper hit for me and big thanks to garageland for recommending Nothing, soooo good. Nothing but good things on the facilities and the organization, I’d definitely come back for year 2.
My run was : Zulu (only one song but I’m sure I’ll see them again), Margaritas P., Mike Watt, King Woman, Nothing, Mdou, WetLeg, Sparks, Turnstile, Descendents, Beach House and Godspeed.
I caught one or two songs from some others and hit Despacio real quick.

Strokes fans in the front pit sitting down during the other acts deserve a special place in festival hell. Wasn't in there past Wet Leg, but I hope they all got in a fight with the Pharbs at one point.
Besides that, great second day overall, recap tomorrow probably.

Im sure all the Idles people rearranged their asses after Colossus came on and Joe asked to split the crowd up. There was a lot of people who werent having it and quickly peaced out in the front half of the crowd.Today felt busier early on but was surprised that Phoebe had such a sparse crowd for example. But having to go against Turnstile into Beach House mightve just kept people from bothering to walk back to main stage. Wet Leg looked to have had the biggest daytime crowd from either day.
So the ticket offer that I mentioned last week was $60 for a single day or $100 for 2 day VIP. Should get the ticket sales count eventually too.
Went in there twice yesterday, with the second time being around 4 PMish and the lights WERE ON. First time was around 2 PM and I got up front to the decks and watched James Murphy and (I think it was) 2 Many DJS spin records. Very interesting seeing how they operate back there with CRATES of vinyl to pull from.
Surprisingly great day yesterday. This fest fucking ruled…
1) Beach House - Fuuuuck. I’ve seen this band at least a dozen times over 16 years, but not recently. I am so impressed with their growth. First time hearing anything post Cherry Depression live and everything sounded just fucking awesome. I was really getting down to Lemon Glow and Dark Spring. Very cool seeing them go from playing to like 50 people in a small bar to closing a festival stage.
2) The Strokes - Julian Casablanca in a good mood? What band is this?! First time seeing the Strokes where they actually looked like they were enjoying themselves. Got there right before Juicebox, which is one of my favorite songs, and enjoyed being up in the crowd for some of their bigger hits. Also, Reptilia is such a dirty fucker live.
3) Shame - As somebody else said, wow holy shit! What a performance! These guys came to play and put on a show. The new songs sound sick live and I can’t wait to hear this new album. Also, best pit of the festival!
4) Sparks - Second time seeing these legends and first time seeing them with a full band, which added a lot to their live sound. Dynamic performances of classics like This Town Ain’t Big Enough, Angst In My Pants, and No. 1 Song In Heaven.
5) Phoebe Bridgers - I hadn’t planned on going to this one, but with the crazy stupid line for Four Tet + Floating Points, and not feeling the back area for Turnstile, I ended up catching the first 20 min of Phoebe. Actually enjoyed this! Maybe it’s because of this being a local show with all the history she mentioned of Pasadena and learning to drive in the Rose Bowl parking lot. Something felt special about her performance, although I’m not a big fan. Got shivers down my spine a couple times and only left because of Beach House.
6) Wet Leg - Another act that may have turned me on to them even though I’m not a big fan of their studio output. Solid live performance that gave off great energy for a surprisingly large crowd that was also feeling it.
7) Fundido - Awesome DJ set to start the day. Very fun and upbeat dance music under the gloriously shaded stage of the 19th hole.
8) Deafheaven - I didn’t dislike this set but also didn’t love it. I honestly went to hang out before Sparks since the Despacio line was too long at this point in the day. Playing their new songs with the old songs creates a very odd juxtaposition of what type of band they are. Still good live, but not great IMO.
Annnd that’s everything I saw at least 20 min of! Leaving off snippets of Slowthai, Paris Texas, Turnstile, Naafi, Spellling, and Nothing which were all fine but didn’t draw me in to stay longer than 10 min.
Solid festival experience! Hope it comes back next year!

Goddamnit, this festival sounds like it was as up my alley as advertised. As if I needed another reason to be bummed about my L.A. job prospect falling through.
I'm glad you all had a blast (he said, consumed by FOMO). I hope it was successful enough that they bring it back!
I’m such a nerd that I was looking at this on setlist.fm. They can’t decide if if was Moya or BBF3. Anyone that was there and knows GYBE shouldn’t be confused about that.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Holy shit yesterday was awesome. Mdou Moctar is a guitar god, Shame really set the tone for the evening and then Idles and Turnstile carried the torch. James Murphy bringing the heat in Despacio, and then motherfucking Godspeed to top it all off? Are you kidding me?
Now I just gotta get a new pair of feet before Primavera and Desert Daze.
It was a nice fest and all (several hours in Despacio each day was a decent part of my fun, including shutting it down last night. Even though they couldn’t find level ground to place it on), but the dust was kinda a dealbreaker. That was like if they threw 3 Coachellas and 3 stagecoaches back to back. As a no-longer local, not sure I’ll be back. Nice that it’s super walkable, but sound bleed was a near-constant presence and under powered second stage wasn’t great either. They should move it to the Coliseum and make it the true FYF heir that it so clearly is.

In all fairness, it was both. No shit, I offered Efrim $40 to play Moya and he smiled, winked and told me to keep my money.
anyone see Four Tet + Floating Points? have never seen either but i’m very excited to see them do that collab set opening for Jamie xx in NYC
I did for about 30 min or so. It was good, but Avalon Emerson delivered such a high energy set that 4T+FP couldn’t keep it on that level for me, so I decided to leave after 30 min.

Haha, yeah two days at this fest destroyed me and I also have those two 3-day fests coming up. Phew!

Avalon Emerson is one of the other openers actually, along with Omar S. this makes me more excited for their set at least

I've never been to this venue, but that much dust on a golf course is surprising to me.

At Cruel World, the festival grounds were green. This weekend, it was mostly dirt and dust. I think all the festivals plus this drought may have destroyed this place.

Theyve had 5 days worth of festival at the venue before this weekend. It was green back in May for JLH and Cruel World. But if they werent watering the grass that much knowing it was gonna be unuseable after these 2 weekends, then it makes sense why it was totally destroyed.
And its difficult to move back to the Coliseum because Gv has their deal with Pasadena and theyll likely stick with the spot they got. You would have to go back to the 2015 version of it anyway with main stage in the parking lot next to banc of california and then you have the Lawn and Trees stages. But how is it gonna feel there if you would be having less than half the attendance of FYF for TANP.
I would say they just have to make The Greens and Back Nine stages literally alternate so theres zero sound bleed at any given time. I didnt like the change to 19th Hole with the exits yesterday. It was a good move to make people leave on the other side where the restrooms were which makes sense cause you can just go there real quick and move on to whatever else.

Sunday rankings:
1. Caroline Polachek - Surprised I'm ranking her at the top, but dang, she had the coolest looking stage of anyone this weekend. Different stage than she had last year, so she's definitely revving up for her next album cycle, and I'm impressed how she's become a bona fide pop star of her own post-Chairlift. Graceful moves, pitch perfect live vocals, and the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand.
2. Sparks - Okay, I have a confession. I didn't get really into Sparks until the Edgar Wright documentary. Naturally, a festival set was perfect for me so I could hear all the hits. Twas a good time, and I was surprised by the audience diversity. I expected it to be a primarily older crowd, but all ages were in attendance.
3. The Strokes - The ultimate crapshoot live headliner, I thought they started off pretty strong and then lost momentum as the set went on, taildiving with that horrid drunk rendition of "Under Cover of Darkness". Also, how do you play a whopping 5 songs off First Impressions of Earth and have none of them be "Heart in a Cage"? Those deep cuts probably satisfied the hardcores but people were leaving in droves during them.
4. Wet Leg - I've seen Wet Leg three times now. I fucking love Wet Leg. They're my favorite new thing of the last several years. Perhaps it was the heat, but they weren't doing their fun guitar somersaults and twirls they were doing earlier this year. I still had a really fun time, being just right of the "Chaise Longue" most pit (they are thankfully playing that song sped up again after slowing it down in the spring) and surely annoying the Strokes campers who decided to sit down in prime real estate during the whole set.
5. Mdou Moctar - Went into this set knowing nothing about these guys, and they were sick! Not much else to say other than they were a fun jam pre-Wet Leg.
6. Phoebe Bridgers - What a crowd shift. The shrieks during this set sounded like preteens seeing their favorite boy band that their parents took them to. The last time I saw Phoebe was opening for The National on "Stranger in the Alps", so this was obviously quite different. Like The Strokes, I thought she started off like a festival-commanding act but then trailed off as she got into her sleepier material.
7. SPELLLING - Seems there were some mixed feelings about this set. I thought it was nice as an early afternoon set that felt sunny and easygoing. But someone's gotta be last place since I committed to the list format!
???. Beach House - I only caught 4 or 5 songs (seen them enough times over the years), but their crowd was absolutely massive until The Strokes started. Could've easily swapped stages with Phoebe and had similar crowd turnouts at each.
Despacio - Spent more time in there Sunday. I can't tell if it was better lit or if my eyes just adjusted to the darkness, but I had more fun this time.
I hope this festival happens again. I also hope it's earlier in the summer so there's a bit more grass.

Agreed that it should have been Beach House > Strokes to split the crowd better. Knew from experience with Cruel World and TANP on Saturday that unless you get to that secondary stage 20 min before, you’re not getting a spot or good sound. Made all the difference for that Beach House set to be 20 yards away center versus being stuck way in the back.
only mediocre set I saw all weekend was Isaiah Rashad. Great festival.
Saturday: Dave P-Hana Vu-Dawn Richard-half of Peach-Genesis Owusu-Julia Jacklin-Ying Yang Twins-Ethel Cain-end of Earl-Isaiah Rashad-second half of Mac-Despacio til it closed-end of Le Tigre-LCD
Sunday: Zulu-merch-Margaritas Podridas while eating-Mike Watt-Sofia Kourtesis-Despacio-Wet Leg-end of TSHA-Avalon Emerson-beginning of FT/FP-Phoebe-end of FT/FP-Godspeed

Since it's not Four Tet solo she'll have the best set on that lineup IMO
