So I heard a kitchen timer going off in the 8yo's room an hour after bedtime. I go in and she's pretending to sleep. I finally get her to give it to me over her protestations that she wants to stay up until midnight.
As I left the room I heard her whisper from the darkness 'Oh, I will stay up until midnight.'

Why is she wanting to stay up that late? Like is there a reason or just because she's 8 and never had?

Gotcha. Does she get to stay up on NYE? That was how I got Kyle out of that phase.
I think she did one year. Usually it's just me with my wife sleeping on the couch.
The urge to stay up til midnight was not articulated until she was discovered. She hasn't brought it up since. Usually we have to go to her room to confiscate reading materials and/or instruments that she can use to read by. Her constant reading is a legit problem sometimes.

OMG, are you seriously complaining that your child is an avid reader? 🤦♀️🙄

You ever have to deal with grumpy crying kids at 7am on a Tuesday? Not fun.
Now if they’re older they get more leeway but 8y.o.’s don’t make the best decisions just yet.
I put my littles in bed about 30 minutes before I actually want them to sleep so they can wind down a bit. Like, they do best being asleep at the latest by 9:30 to wake up a little before 7am. I call bed time before 8:30 so they have time to brush their teeth, ask for water, ask for at least 2 rounds of hugs and kisses and me going in to tell them to keep it down at least once before they actually go to sleep.
For the teens I call bedtime at 11 and have the router set to cut all their devices off at that time. If they stay up, they stay up but they usually pass out within an hour.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Bedtime is bedtime yo.
I get that, but honestly if it was between playing with dinosaur toys under the covers and reading, reading would definitely get some leniency. Kyle was not a fan of reading at 8.

That’s how it is being a single parent. I’ll be like “ I SAID GO TO BED AND STOP MESSING AROUND.” “Now come here and give me huggies and I’ll tuck you in” 😂😂

Luckily all my kids love to read, or at least went through their phases. The teens don’t read as much anymore but weekly library trips were a staple from kinder to around high school.

I am a terrible bad cop. My first one stayed up with me, my second one is regimented and would tell ME it was time for bed at his proper bed time. Couldn’t have two more totally different children.

Yea I’m not the best at it either, my ex was the best bad cop ‘cause she didn’t gaf. lol I had to learn tho.
I definitely read too much as a child. I said I was scared of the dark so I could have a nightlight (really, I just read forever in bed). If we went out to get milk, I had to bring the book I was reading and two backups. What if we didn't stop just to get milk, but had other last minute things to do and I finished my book? What if I wasn't feeling the second book I brought? I needed OPTIONS!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I can remember going to a big family dinner at a restaurant once and bringing a book with me. The grown-ups joked about it, but I was the only person my age there, and their conversation was far less interesting to me than whatever book I was reading.

I wish Kyle was like that. I personally had to go to speech therapy a few times in my life due to my auditory discrimination. It's why I mispronounce words all the time and why there are words that I can't pronounce or I understand in my brain how to say, but I just can't get my actual speech (tongue/mouth) to properly articulate the syllables. Because of that I HAVE to read to basically keep up my vocabulary and to properly pronounce words.
The last time that I was in speech therapy was in 9th grade and I was reading at a 3rd grade level because of my disorder. That was all it took for me to become an avid reader. It is also why I would be very lenient about reading with Kyle. I had to find books that got him interested. He reads now, but not at 8.
I think when they’re tired, I suffer more than they do.
Yeah, like, I've got to get them out the door in the morning or I'm late to work. Having to spend a half an hour getting their asses dressed is a problem.

I love that she's a reader. But she can't stop sometimes and it leads to problems.

I have no idea if I had trouble getting ready for school, but my mom does talk about how sometimes she would take away my books and tell me to play outside.

I was a late talker. I went to a special speech therapy pre-school for it. For my entire life since then, my family asks if they can send me back and shut me up. I think I still get remnants of it sometimes. I'll be fine for weeks or months and then I'll have days where I struggle to find the word I am looking for over and over again.
(My sister and I also had some speech therapy in middle school - they apparently didn't like the slight Queens accent that we had picked up from our parents...)
