I need to not be camping on quail again. I'm not sure what time I need to be on the line Thursday to be close to the camp stage, but I'm going to do that. I'm too old to walk as far as everyone else
Actually now that I'm thinking about it, maybe I'll stay near pappy and Harriots the night before instead of my brothers in Vegas.
I remember getting there fairly early in 2018 and being on Quail just above the interesction of Campground Rd. & Owl, kinda in the middle of the entire camping area and thought we were about as close as you could get if you were tent camping. Did they open more tent camping areas closer to the main entrance in 2019 or 2021? We were around where the arrow is.
Yeah I don't remember it being too bad. Would be nice to get into that general area again. We're likely staying in Tustin on Wed, putting us an hour+ with traffic to get to the lake on Thur, so it shouldn't be too hard for us to get there on the early side.
There's a good part of quail and then the "WHY AM I SO FAR AWAY" end of quail.
deadbob that's about where I camped in 2019 and besides getting list in that big field one night while trying to take a short cut it wasn't too bad.
3 years in a row I was at the "why am i so far"end, and I feel like I got there early every time. I'm fact in 18 I was there almost at the front of the line and they made us go to the back of quail which was infuriating. Getting to the bazaar just sucked. I wish it was more central. Otherwise, put me on bobcat

in 2019 I don't think I got in until around 6 or 7 and got set up right around bob's arrow so maybe there's something to be said with showing up a little later? I only have that year to go off of since I didn't camp last year.
Is there any way to just go elsewhere to setup your tent?! I mean, they aren't the most organized bunch as we all know. Back in the Mecca Days we ended up camping just across the camping stage after we ended up in the wrong area by accident, and one of the Moon Block guys told us it was cool to setup shop right then and there.

isn't it pretty much a free for all for tent camping? I feel like they only direct you if you're in a vehicle.

You can park where they tell you and then move camp, but I'm sleeping in the van so I'm fucked
When we camped in 2018, the volunteer directing cars was so thankful that we actually went where she told us to. It was like we were the first people to listen to her all day. Then after she walked away, we moved to a better spot.

Niiiiiice. That's the way to do it. No need to be rude to the volunteers, but you gotta roll to the right spots. Especially if you took the effort to show up early to get a prime camping spot.
if you show up too late with car camping you run the risk of not getting an actual 'campsite' and instead being placed in one of random areas between campsites. that happened to me in 2018 and it kinda sucked.
anyone notice how they didn't open up the bobcat or roadrunner loops last year? i was on the far side of deer loop and they ended up lining up a ton of car campers in the shitty middle area of that loop instead of giving them all the campsites on bobcat and roadrunner. i would have been pissed.

But I'm assuming if you show up anytime Thursday, especially by mid-afternoon, you should be able to get a good camping spot right?

I was going to ask a similar question. I see areas of camping with denser, shady trees. Pitching something like that to my lady might be easier than saying it's a tossup and we might be out in the desert.
What would the strategy be for something like that? Show up by noon to guarantee shady trees; earlier if you want to get picky?

This is what I'm specifically going off though from their site. Looks like this might be the normal lake campground operations and they might use the shadier part of the campground for the fest grounds? Not sure.

2019 was the only year of thursday camping, so not a lot of experience to go off, but i think arriving thursday mid afternoon will get a solid spot. ultimately still gonna depend on the random whims of the volunteers with how they fill the loops. but unless you get lucky with a central spot on the quail loop, or somehow get assigned owl/deer which i assume will just be RVs, all the other loops are a pretty similar walk to the fest. camping opens at 9am thursday though which i believe is earlier than in 2019.

they had me park next to a bunch of trees, but it isn't in this photo. I think it was a street beyond the center/bottom of that photo. but they definitely didn't have all those parking spots where I was I don't think. I'm pretty sure that's Coyote.
I saved my parking spot in google maps in 2019. here's where I was parked and I arrived after 5 and I think it might have been around 7 by the time I parked.

oh yea this pic shows exactly what i saying with the people who were forced to line up in the middle area. this is the owl/deer loop which will probably be all RVs and other rentals this year. last year they tossed car campers in there too, both in the 'developed' campsites and that crappy middle area, but i think only cuz of the smaller '21 crowd. my campsite is actually in the far lower left in this pic! it was kinda nice and quiet being on the far side like that. anyway i think this is the least shaded loop by quite a margin. there's not a TON of trees and shade in the other loops, but definitely more than this one. i want to say you'll have no problem at least sharing some shade with the cool people around you although i wouldn't count on your tent being shaded all day.

that looks like a prime spot! how was it?
it was great. Close enough to bathrooms and camp center and not too bad of a walk to the festival during the day. At night it was a little tricky because finding the path to cut through that field across the way was hard to find though! I didn't set up a tent and being between that tree and bush gave us a nice private entrance to the van.
Thx for all the info JSMSD and Scenic. So sounds like if you get there before dark on Thursday, which we want to do anyways to setup shop with daylight, we should be fine.
Been jamming out to Daze bands while quarantined at home...Mildlife has vaulted to the top for me as a must-see. For anybody who wants to chill out to some grooves at home, throw on this love set by them:

Ok thank you! That was helpful to look at the satellite view too. From some of the Google image results, it looked like there were large areas of mostly creosote bushes and joshua trees. But further googling has learned me that DD used to be in Joshua Tree, so that makes sense now

The walk to the fest isn't really my issue, it's how far things are from the bazaar. I was so far last year I didn't even bother going over there. At least if I'm camped on the bazaar side I'll be walking through it on the way to and fro

I had been avoiding JPEGMAFIA because I think his personality seems kinda corny edgelordy, but I’m listening to his last few projects and they’re so good
