If an 18-25 year old person can't come up with Boys Don't Cry, Lovesong, Close To Me or Friday I'm In Love they probably don't really care that much about music.
It matters because after a disastrous ticket sales year they aren’t going to book a band to headline that isn’t going to move tickets. If they headline Bonaroo they will have one of the most empty headliner sets ever.
this thing about “kids not knowing” The Cure is weird when Roo sold out 2020 with Tool headlining. They just have to put some younger acts around them and a fest w The Cure headlining could sell out.
Tool has a crazy dedicated fan base that The Cure doesn’t have though.

The Cure has more mainstream appeal to people in my age bracket I promise you that.
Also Bonnaroo isn’t just about “the kids” anyway. They sell best with blended lineups that cater to a ton of age groups. 2021 sold out and I don’t know anyone my age who cares about Foo Fighters that much.

I find it strange that I'm agreeing with you this much today.

I always see them listed in "throwback artists you should be listening to" Tik Toks, I think they are more beloved by the youth than one might think. Obviously anecdotal but I know a lot of people in their early-mid 20s that love them.

BTW if anyone is interested they're still giving away 2020 commemorative bands/bandanas if you spend $30+ on Bonnaroo's website. Not sure if they were in my cart from last year or if they got auto-added when I made a purchase. I'm gonna take all 8 of my bandanas to my local tailor and figure out something cool to wear next year

going to do a "throwback artists you should listen to" tik tok but only talk about psychedelic/progressive/jazz fusion rock band The Soft Machine so they get booked at Bonnaroo 2023.
now i'm going to do that thing where I put on The Soft Machine's "Third" and forget what i'm listening to or what i'm doing after about 10 minutes.

i dont know that The Cure is super popular with the kids but it's also not a booking the kids are going to be mad at and a lot of those hypothetical 18-25 year olds would pull them up on spotify and realize they know way more songs than they thought. It wouldn't really be a booking for the kids though the other two headliner slots would be for that
I don't realistically see them playing anyway though but they have been a dream Roo headliner for a while because they'd probably do like a marathon set. Could see it being well over 3 hours. itd rule. But that being said I also dont think they are out of the question and they would headline if they played, im pretty certain of that

Speaking of old acts the kids like, the Dead has become pretty relevant. It started out kind of as a frat thing but when I saw Dead and Co, there were a lot of people my age.

I was thinking about this too! My best friend's nephew is a sophomore in HS and he and his friends love the Dead right now, they've been grabbing up old records when they find them. Dead & Co were great in 2016.

i can only see the cure playing bonnaroo if they also play coachella within a year or two. headlining coachella would give their name a pretty big bump with young people that go to festivals then bonnaroo could justify them as being top 3. otherwise i’d only see the cure headlining festivals in new york/chicago/la that aren’t quite as big as coachella/lolla/bonnaroo/acl like riot fest, panorama, and fyf

Yeah this is 100% true. Everyone from the wooks to the frats likes the Grateful Dead now. The dead have probably never been more popular than they are right now

I don't know if Coachella is ever again booking a non-pop/hip-hop headliner unless its a super rare booking. The only exception is they might still book RATM next year as a make-up but tbh I wouldn't be surprised if they changed course with that even. They have access to book people other fests won't get because it's become such a status thing
They wouldn't book The Cure and I don't think that'd have any bearing on them getting booked at other fests
I'm also just absolutely perplexed at this continuing suggestion that The Cure have somehow gotten less big when their music is still played just as much and they haven't toured in 3 years. And this is all ignoring that they have their first album in 14 years probably coming out this year (supposedly, it has been a long time coming). I know all the fests are kind of taking a turn towards a more poppy direction with headliners so I could see them staying away but I don't think it has anything to do with the bands popularity. Those smaller fests may book them but they'd be a number 1 at those

I include myself in this. The Dead have been my top Spotify artists three years in a row.
