Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
i can only see the cure playing bonnaroo if they also play coachella within a year or two. headlining coachella would give their name a pretty big bump with young people that go to festivals then bonnaroo could justify them as being top 3. otherwise i’d only see the cure headlining festivals in new york/chicago/la that aren’t quite as big as coachella/lolla/bonnaroo/acl like riot fest, panorama, and fyf
I don't know if Coachella is ever again booking a non-pop/hip-hop headliner unless its a super rare booking. The only exception is they might still book RATM next year as a make-up but tbh I wouldn't be surprised if they changed course with that even. They have access to book people other fests won't get because it's become such a status thing
They wouldn't book The Cure and I don't think that'd have any bearing on them getting booked at other fests
I'm also just absolutely perplexed at this continuing suggestion that The Cure have somehow gotten less big when their music is still played just as much and they haven't toured in 3 years. And this is all ignoring that they have their first album in 14 years probably coming out this year (supposedly, it has been a long time coming). I know all the fests are kind of taking a turn towards a more poppy direction with headliners so I could see them staying away but I don't think it has anything to do with the bands popularity. Those smaller fests may book them but they'd be a number 1 at those
The Cure were the 2nd billed artist at ACL in 2013 and were 4th in 2019. It’s not exactly hard to see they aren’t as relevant. Beyond that just look at the last 3 fests they were top billed on their day in NA. Pasadena Daydream 2019, Bestival 2016, and Sasquatch 2016. Now compare that to what they were doing in 2013 and prior when they were headlining Lolla, ACL, Coachella, etc. I think they’ll continue headlining regional fests in NA, but unless they get a big push from the new album the bigger fests aren’t going to book them in headlining spots.
Everyone calling for Tame to headline, I would love it if it happened but how much more do they really have to offer off this album? They had a huge festival run this year, hitting almost every big music festival (minus Coachella). I love Tame, but taking up a headliner spot might not be the move for Roo in 2023.
Moving on.. Most of us could assume Odesza will make a festival run next year. I could very easily see them on Okee - Bonnaroo - Electric forest lineups, possibly even Coachella. I understand they are sub headliners, just throwing it out there.
Kendrick Lamar... he would have to headline a day, letting Post Malone headline Saturday in 19' but not Kendrick would be disrespectful. Kid Cudi would be dope, but definitely sub headliner.
RATM would be insane but it feels like we've been talking about it for so long at this point
Speaking of old acts the kids like, the Dead has become pretty relevant. It started out kind of as a frat thing but when I saw Dead and Co, there were a lot of people my age.
Yeah this is 100% true. Everyone from the wooks to the frats likes the Grateful Dead now. The dead have probably never been more popular than they are right now
"The oldest 100,000-crowd concert reported to Billboard Boxscore is Grateful Dead's gig at the Raceway Park, Englishtown, New Jersey on September 3, 1977. The concert was attended by 107,019 people, which remains the largest ticketed concert in the United States to date."
that was atypical for the dead at the time but still. i imagine the stadiums in the late 80s into the 90s were the peak of the dead's popularity.

most people on here would rather have tame impala than lizzo and in all actuality we're probably going to get lizzo instead of tame. next year is going to be the year of artists deciding if they still want to tour 2019/2020/2021 material or get in the studio and move toward touring in a world that isn't affected as dramatically from covid

i think fare thee well did an excellent job at creating a massive music event that started a resurgence of the dead and kicked off the dead and co era. i don't remember as many people being that into the dead in my 24 year old life until fare thee well got announced. seemed like wooks and wook adjacent people that were into festivals, jam, edm, and recreational drugs started to rally around the dead once fare thee well happened and dead and co formed. i remember people flying to santa clara before the chicago shows happened. they had trey filling in for jerry and people still loved those shows
as much as i love Tame, it’d be a bit of a bummer to see them headline Roo 2023 unless they put something new out.
The Slow Rush tour has been great and all but they’ve played just about everywhere across all of the legs, and the tour hasn’t changed at all across the 4 shows i’ve seen
of course, it’d be awesome to see them do something like the Lonerism set at Desert Daze or a LN Wave House jam type deal, but i can’t imagine Roo is just going to book them for that.

I think most of us hoping for Tame just want them to do the headlining gig they were going to do in '20 and '21 unless they release another album or a B-sides compilation from TSR. RATM would also be a bucket list act but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I don’t think it was Fare Thee Well that got younger people into the Dead, it was John Mayer.

they released TSR B-sides and remixes that included about 8 total songs. haven’t seen where they’ve ever performed any of them

i think it's both. fare thee well drummed up the dead's legacy and that it would be the last time the living members would play together, and dead and co and mayer was the best project that they could come up with the members that still wanted to tour as some version of the dead

for sure. pre FTW the incarnation of the dead was Furthur, and they played theaters, after FTW Bob picked up Mayer, formed Dead & Co, and has played arenas since.
i think the FTW shows also had a significant impact on phish via trey. weir was finally the authority figure trey needed to tell him to relax and just enjoy the jam. trey pretty much stopped "rip cording" jams with phish after FTW. not saying there weren't good 3.0 jams before then, and not saying some jams don't get cut short too early since then, but you are a hell of a lot more likely to get a long interesting jam post 2015 with phish than pre 2015.

the resurgence of the dead came from a lot of different directions. mayer for sure, the press around the FTW shows, grateful dead designs and shirts being plastered all over a bunch of high end fashion brands clothing, and a lot of musicians in the indie world are either long time dead heads or came into it later (i'm thinking of the guy from the national and ezra koenig).
weir's honestly played it pretty smart. either him or the people around him, but i think he's a sharp guy.

I somehow totally missed that, then here's hoping Kevin decides a new album is due soon.

the netflix bob weir doc and long strange trip were another couple of streaming releases that were also popular. now that i think of it it's impressive how they've kept the band so relevant in the last 10 years. having the history and catalog that they had certainly helps

yeah that’d be nice but our only hope there is that they worked through a lot of new material during the onset of the pandemic. otherwise, wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see something until 2024 or so.

Lemme get one of them Tame Impala Soundsystem sets too. 2 unique sets please 2024
re: The Grateful Dead/Dead and Co., my love has really increased since the onset of my college years for a number of reasons. namely, John Mayer in Dead and Co., talking to Phish fans at Roo 2019 and subsequently becoming more intrigued by jam/cult following, Long Strange Trip, etc.
it’s surprising to see how many people i know around my age going to these Dead and Co, Phish, and other jam shows, and i think they have all kinda fed into one another and helped all of those bands out over the past 5 or so years. maybe i’m a bit wrong in that perspective, but that’s just what i’ve seen from my own experience

good point, forgot about that.
it's interesting to think about what goes into protecting a band's legacy and keeping them feeling relevant. it's easier when the band continues to tour in some form, but i'm thinking of a band like R.E.M. that was fucking huge back in the day, and by any measure a really good band, but just don't seem to be in the conversation at all anymore.
this thing about “kids not knowing” The Cure is weird when Roo sold out 2020 with Tool headlining. They just have to put some younger acts around them and a fest w The Cure headlining could sell out.
Tool has a crazy dedicated fan base that The Cure doesn’t have though.
The Cure for sure have a hardcore fan base. Their tours sell good to great, and they play 3+ hour sets of deep cuts, so not designed to appeal to casual/nostalgia fans.
That would be a good and a bad for Bonnaroo. It’s the only major US fest where you could get a full show from them, but if you’re just a casual attendee and roll up waiting to hear Just Like Heaven you’d be in for a long night.

that's because you went to ole piss, I don't think there's a town half as obsessed with jam bands as Oxford
Tame may have played a ton of festivals and shows the last couple years, but that doesn’t change the fact they’re one of the top artists Roo attendees want, especially after not getting them 2 years in a row. They would help sell a lot of tickets.

doesnt help that last time I saw them I thought they were pretty dang boring live (and I genuinely enjoy their music), but Tame Impala may have been the easiest big live act to see of the last few years based on how many festivals they've played and how extensive their venue tour was on top of that. incredibly boring booking, I want something I haven't seen a bunch of times and will have a million more opportunities to see
they pulled a Black Keys and despite being a band I like, oversaturated themselves to the point that I think they are an incredibly lame and boring fest booking
