I'm assuming we will get more information on the superjam soon too?
Tbh, it's really too late to really boost tickets sales. Even an addition or 2 isn't gonna make it sell out. AF at Coachella doesn't do anything for tickets, I wonder how that happened tho. Must've been AF asking to play?
Yeah true, Bonnaroo is a big undertaking for people who haven't done it before so it's hard for it to be an impulse decision.
Let's play a thought experiment. Say you're working in sales or promotions at AC / LN, what is your pitch to give ticket sales a boost at this point?
Nothing. They shouldn't focus on ticket sales at this point. If sales were disappointing they should talk about 2023 and not throw whatever they can at 2022.
I'd already suspected that they weren't great since they had to go back on their word about the Ambassador / Street Team thing and have been pitching stuff like gas card giveaways. But I've heard from some folks in town and others this past week I trust that if things don't pick up it's going to be 2016 levels of attendance.
How is that possible with those headliners and preheadliners?!?!
Idea: Book Nine Inch Nails and several other acts.
Also, jettison MGK and Roddy Ricch. Personally, I don't care if they're there or not but I've never heard one person talk about them like they're a positive for this festival.
coachella has stealth added acts when they've released the schedule before and i don't understand why bonnaroo doesn't do the same thing on the years they get decent last minutes adds. i remember in 2015 they added kacey musgraves and d'angelo a couple of months after the lineup was released that was fucking insane
So I just checked and that was seventy-six days out. I believe that we are sixty-two days out today.
So It's a little closer and that was really the last time that the festival had any notable late additions. Well, there was Jazon Mraz added the weekend of in 2016 if you count that.
I'm guessing that they're leaning towards eating their losses rather than going all in and trying to lure new attendees if it's as bad as roobus has heard.
I made a post on bonnarootickets yesterday to gauge the market. Offered to buy 3 for $250 and got 5 responses within 2 hours, no one even trying to negotiate on price. A couple were sketch with 0 posts/comment history, but a couple seemed legit and willing to go through paypal goods and services, and one even shared a screenshot of (presumably) the frontgate receipt/ticket confirmation. I think I'm shooting for a $200 price point.
The weird thing is that I got a Front Gate email today that included the typical collection of festival posters and Bonnaroo's was like this one:
They have to know that their problem is the headliners, right? Why go all in on that?
just looking at this top 9 is terrible. there's enough there that driving in from Memphis isn't a big deal, especially being starved of live music for 2+ years. but no way i'd fly in from AZ for this.
I don't think any surprise headliners would drive a bunch of ticket sales either. I don't know what the marketing approach would be at this point. They already used their trump card a few years ago on the Flushable ToiletsTM

i want bonnaroo to succeed, so i hate that we might be looking at 2016 crowd levels. but that also makes me jealous for those attending this year, less people means everything about bonnaroo will be easier and more pleasant.

mgk is interesting. i think a lot of people are excited for him and just aren't saying it out loud. i went to a bachelor party recently and a couple of frat bros i was with absolutely loved him and his music. his most popular song on spotify has 479,000,000+ listens and number two is 372,000,000+. the song "make up sex" hasn't been released as a single but has 15,000,000+ listens since being released with the album last friday.
i think mgk is a major pull but we don't understand it because his music is bad and his personality is big. for the college age bonnaroo goer that isn't necessarily a music fan mgk is a recognizable enough name in the pop music landscape that it makes them want to pull the trigger to go with their friends after they recognize him and a couple of other names

yeah i was gunna say on that headliner pic cdev posted MGK strikes me as far and away the most popular name.

This honestly can't be overstated enough; lines are a lot shorter for everything, you can basically walk into nearly any pit right before the show starts, you aren't constantly running into folks and feel like you have room to breathe, better chance at a better camping spot, etc. 2016 crowd was great and I would enjoy another year like that, but definitely wanna see Bonnaroo bounce back next year too. They have got to book a better lineup and they're dummies if they don't realize that!

Can u fill me in? Really bad ticket sales or?
2016 level sales = ~46K, a good 25-30K off of where their goals are and less than half of the estimated crowd of their biggest year(s?).

I get that he's known. I'm just not sure that people "drive to a festival to see him" like him. Nickleback and Maroon Five are very well known but that wouldn't necessarily make people drive to rural Tennessee (unless it was to escape them).

My concern is that 2016 lead to two or three of the least lauded Bonnaroos. I'm not sure where they go from here but I'm a bit afraid. Then again, I will save time and money if Bonnaroo goes away since it will remove the FOMO that has me returning even if the lineup isn't ideal.

that's fair, and it's not always easy to judge overall popularity vs. "drive to rural Tennessee" popularity. i could even say that about Tool, they are hugely popular and sell out arenas, but I'm not sure how hard they drive festival ticket sales (especially just coming off a big arena tour that hit a lot of major markets).
but if the crowd at bonnaroo is mostly young, and mostly young people listen to MGK, i'm betting he will have a big crowd at his set.
anyway i'm still a proponent of the 2019 headliner strategy: big pop music name (post malone), one super cool critically acclaimed name (childish gambino), and an act with a hardcore fanbase (phish).

yeah I don’t think MGK really appeals to the festival crowd, or at least this specific festival crowd
I don’t think taken in isolation any one act in the top 9 is that bad (except maybe roddy ricch), it’s just the combination of all of them has no coherent strain.
I know they’re never going back to 2008-2014 level lineups but I really hope they take a look at what made 2019-2021 sell out and revisit that formula
I fear they’re going to go the 2017 route of doubling down on tiktok popular acts for the undercard

Yeah, it's definitely a bit scary as another person who will probably keep attending as long as the festival is happening. I'm really crossing my fingers for a return to the 2019/2020 quality, however naïve that might be. Just hoping for the best at this point!
