Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I mean I don't doubt that, but running a news platform or comms product isn't just what you know. It's also who you know, and how practiced you are at communicating what you do know.
No disagreement there. But just because there are other important variables to a successful podcast doesn't change the original criticism about what they know.
They are still wildly successful. Taco and I talk shop, and while I am impressed with how our own numbers have grown in the last year, their metrics are downright astronomical and being a Consequence partner is just one factor of many in that.
No, same thing Barry did. I was kind of guessing we'd get a tease about it today or tomorrow and the schedule would drop on Thursday.
Bonnaroo seems to be doing a lot of things relatively last minute again this year. Most of the people I've been talking with who are organizing things seem to keep kicking various cans down the road, which is a little anxiety inducing given that we're around seven weeks out now.
It feels like, despite the feedback, their communications remain stripped down. Mostly just selling tickets or fulfilling sponsorship obligations. The occasional layup post for high five Friday, but nothing sustained or impactful.
I don’t recall if you’ve done your Rick Farman interview yet, but I wonder if he has any awareness or take on that. I feel like Superfly brought a lot of weirdness and unpredictability to the Bonnaroo brand. That’s been stripped away into a more generic “come have fun at a festival with your friends” message — with a thick layer of the Bonnaroovian code to tie into the brand. That, and I suppose festivals moved well into the mainstream over the last decade, so maybe it’s not just branding. It’s just not the same to me as some of the more creative things they did. I guess I’m still just surprised that their online presence continues to feel muted and understaffed. It certainly hasn’t helped to move tickets.
(Reading my post over, I don’t mean to sound so negative — I also want this festival to succeed. Just feels like they’re missing some relatively cheap/easy opportunities for engagement.)
You have to remember that Barry isn't a full time festival reporter, he does all kinds of entertainment and arts for the Chattanooga newspaper. He knows a lot about festival stuff and how Roo comes together, but he's got a lot else going on and isn't as obsessive as many of us are. That's why they get interviews with the people that do know firsthand because it is their full time job.
I'm upfront about what I do know and don't know on our thing, and I'll be the first to tell you Barry knows way, way, way more than me when it comes to most of that stuff.
I'm aware that Barry is Chattanooga focused in his job and that he knows more about Moon River.
It's fine that he has other stuff going on. Nobody is begrudging him that.
Barry and Brad's ability to book guests is really the only thing keeping me subscribed to the podcast. They've got some great connections.
I'm sure that they are lovely people. This isn't personal. But they are underserving the segment of the Bonnaroo community that wants to learn more about the actual festival.
Yeah the few times I've listened to the podcast I can only listen for about five mins before I get pissed off at how little they know about the fest they made a podcast about. I feel like 95% of us on this forum could do a better job
They joke and act like it’s funny it’s really annoying honestly. Especially when talking about the campground stuff. “I couldn’t name a single person” I get that they aren’t huge names but I feel like you should at least make an effort to research. I’m still not over berry saying his number one rule with rappers is that they don’t say the n word lmao
Some things are better than last year, some things are about the same as they were last year. They are doing better communicating to media this year, but I'm starting to get a little anxious about the lack of information that most community leaders have been getting to this point. (It was also really not cool how they went back and forth on their word on the street team promos.) I can certainly take any aspect of our Wednesday thing and DIY it if we have to, but I'd obviously rather not if they can help in any way.
I've got my interview with Rick scheduled for this Friday afternoon and it'll publish Sunday / Monday. Turns out the What Podcast is going to have him on too, so I am going to leave most of the music business and overall logistical stuff to them. I'm going to focus mostly on the history of how Bonnaroo started and how things have changed since then. I am also really interested in some of the same stuff you mentioned.
I got in contact with some people with Roo to get our stuff rolling late yesterday, unless they're splitting the campground and Centeroo schedules, sounds like it might be coming later than initially expected.

we should be able to go back and see if those were announced separately. My guess is that they were
Last year they announced them at the same time, which was kind of a surprise to me since somehow in the game of telephone between me and the designers they listed our thing as Roochute hosting it until they very last minute. That's why I've been trying to make sure they have my info super early this time around.

After the last two years all of the historical data seems to be pretty hard to rely on, IMO.
Last year I heard from a lot of people working for LC / AC / C3 that much of their staff was entirely new. They brought on at least a few people who had moved on to work part time in an effort to kind of help pass things along to the new people. With Jeff and others gone now, I imagine the staffing is almost entirely new at this point and a lot of the old promotional schedule or way of doing things has been kind of rebooted.

There’s no way this thing gets cancelled right? Saw on another forum that a poster mentioned they still haven’t even sold 40k tickets (also mentioned Lolla was underselling as well).

It does kind of feel like that's in play, doesn't it?

Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

Yep. It seems so weird they spent yearsssss building this “weirdo farm party” aesthetic only to walk away from it completely and just go radio silent on everything. I

Wouldn’t it just be like 2016 then? So much room to do activities.

I mean, that would be the end of Bonnaroo, right? I realize that's a possibility but god I hope not
I do not agree with some others that Bonnaroo being cancelled is on the table but if it is there's no way any festival can survive 3 years in a row of cancellation where money each years been put into it.

2016 sold 60K, this would be way thinner than even that.

0% chance it gets cancelled. And radio silent??? What you talking about? Sure the social media posts haven’t been great but it’s not like they’ve stopped posting. Anyone who thinks is this will be cancelled has no clue what they’re talking about. Tickets sales across the board on festivals are low, inflation is through the roof. It just might be one of those years where less show in attendance but there is absolutely no chance it gets cancelled I promise you. Also there is definitely no “post” out there saying how many tickets Roo has sold.
