it baffles me that they saw the way the 2020 & 2021 lineups sold, then booked this abysmal lineup for 2022. it's also embarrassing that they either cant, or just wont book serviceable house music.
No Jamie xx, No Four Tet, no Ross from Friends, no Kaytranada, okee booked a damn 7hr Sven Vath set. Channel tres, Disclosure and Lane 8 are great though.
Roo isn't booking any of those acts anymore. This is actually the best house lineup they've ever booked, and its still very paint by numbers. It's almost shocking to see how hard these lineups have fallen off since 2013.

I’ve talked to so many people ranging from “just want to rage for a weekend at roo” to hardcore loser music nerd and haven’t come across a single persons willing to say they like the lineup in the slightest and every conversation lands at “yeah obviously don’t love the lineup this year but we’re going because it’s Roo and it’ll be a good time. Haven’t been able to get to the farm in three years.” Seriously every human I’ve talked to says either that or that they’re not going. I’m still completely confused by who they were even targeting with the top of this lineup and by how they missed all of the obvious heavy hitters from the last few years.

exactly. they wont even book any of the smaller house/techno acts to play Where in the Woods, like how okee does in their forest. "hey lets book dillon francis for the stage we promised house music on."

This isn’t, like, a butthurt Roo defense, but I’m genuinely curious: Coachella aside, is there a multi-genre fest out there this year that eats this lineup’s lunch? I’m not saying one that’s slightly better, or, like, just has better house music. I mean kind of across the board.
Overall, I feel like these kinds of fests are really not crushing it this year, lineup-wise, in general. Like, I haven’t seen one where the general consensus has been, “Damn, THAT is how you do it.” Totally correct me if I’m wrong on that.
Could be this kind of festival is either just having a down year or is going to start becoming less viable given the expanding field of smaller, more specifically-curated events

They booked a bargain basement lineup. There's nothing on this lineup that breaks the bank. Tool is strictly a 30+ act at this point, touring a record that's 3 years old (after playing the Southeast already multiple times). Stevie Nicks solo is very meh, her solo stuff is kinda cheesy/adult contemporary. Why go camp in TN heat to see Stevie when you can see one of her 15 amphitheater dates scheduled around Roo. J Cole is still a head scratcher, like I honestly don't get it, so many better hip hop options if they were looking to target a younger crowd (Tyler, Kendrick, Lil Baby, etc).
If you're going to keep trying to throw a destination multi-genre fest in a non-city location, you better have a UNIQUE and ACCLAIMED lineup.

Bonnaroo '22: no worse than Firefly/OSL/Hangout/Gov Ball. Strong pitch.

Nope, that's why the days of multi-genre fests with these meh lineups might be numbered. If I'm a hip hop fan why wouldn't I just goto Rolling Loud? Or Movement for techno/house? Or Stagecoach for country?
They need to bring a unique and exciting lineup. Coachella's most hyped shows this year weren't headliners...it was Fred Again, Kim Petras, Caribou, 88Rising, Jamie xx, Anitta, Purple Disco Machine, Duck Sauce, etc. All acts that roo could easily book, they just choose not to.
If you're a TWOD fan (which means you're probably 30+, sorry not sorry) why wouldn't you just catch a headline show instead of going to a festival where you can also catch ummmm like 2 other similar acts across an entire weekend.
Either they need to double down on the party vibe and make that their branding, or go back to being the weird, but cool little brother to Coachella that would still snag some good acts but then it you with a curveball like R Kelly, Billy Idol, Weird Al, etc.

at the very least Lolla has massively popular, recently relevant acts like Dua, Doja, Lil Baby. Just think about those three compared to Stevie Nicks, Chicks and Roddy Rich. I mean my god. And Metallica is so much more popular than tool. If Roo had those four swapped for Tool, Stevie, Chicks and Roddy I guarantee tickets would be in a much better spot.

I’d rather watch paint dry on the farm than enjoy the great lineup of Lolla with the crowd that attend

Boston Calling
Great for rock fans. No hip-hop headliner and negligible DJ presence.
I mean, for me, that’s nice, but Boston Calling focused in a rock direction, generally. GovBall went the other direction - pop and hip-hop and next to no rock.
This is kind of what I’m getting at. Trying to serve all those masters as much as possible is, I think, a lot harder than it used to be.

I genuinely think firefly is leagues ahead. Has much stronger headliners, especially with the rarity aspect of MCR and the star power of Dua Lipa. Then in the undercard you have acts like Jamie xx, Charli XCX, Jungle, Little Simz, Benny the Butcher, Cordae, Mannequin Pussy, Ezra Furman and Chai not to mention acts roo also has like Porter, 100 Gecs, Indigo De Souza. It rounds itself out much better imo. It doesnt hold a candle to Coachella obviously. But money aside I would pick FF over Roo if i could only do one.
Even though this is my first year not going to Osh since I started, I would argue that lineup is better as well

Bonnaroo '22: no worse than Firefly/OSL/Hangout/Gov Ball. Strong pitch.
It’s more about the pool of available bookings. I don’t think it’s often possible to just manifest big name artists out of thin air. It depends on who’s touring, who’s going to be where, etc., and all that is even more fraught in a COVID world.
I mean, again, I’m not saying this lineup rules. I totally get why people aren’t into it. I’m just saying that non of this happens in a vacuum, is all.

Agree with this. It's easy to say who Bonnaroo coulda shoulda woulda booked as someone who just attends festivals and reads festival lineups online. Most of us really have no idea what goes into booking one of the biggest American music festival lineups, and doing it during on ongoing pandemic and following two cancellations can't be making it any easier. Any number of behind the scenes reasons lead to the lackluster lineup we have this year. It is what it is. It was doom & gloom around here when the 2016/2017/2018 lineups dropped, then we got a good 2019 lineup & would have had a great 2020 as well. I don't think Bonnaroo is folding.

Not counting European fests I assume? Primavera is ridiculously strong this year

Yeah, sorry - I meant domestic US. You’re 100% right about Primavera.

They also had three headliners drop out - it's not like Harry/Billie/SHMxWeeknd were top choices for them. Rage, Frank, and Kanye were all absolutely hyped when they were booked. It just didn't work out that way. And many of the other acts you mentioned are indeed not acts Roo could easily book. Coachella carries a TON of exposure and non-monetary value that Roo is wholly unable to offer. They've had Jamie and Caribou before but neither Fred again nor PDM have played a stateside show outside of CA or NY. There's no reason to think they're easy to book by a festival in Manchester, TN with declining cultural capital (and likely declining budget as well).
The best festival lineups even if they don't match up with my taste always have a feeling the the people booking them are passionate and would be proud of the result. Bonnaroo this year especially just feels like they picked names at random until they gave up and said that's good enough.

Right, but...they probably didn't do that, you know? Like, if they could've booked Kendrick Lamar, they probably would have, I'm sure.
I dunno. To me, it feels like they're just trying to serve too many masters - hip-hop, rock, pop, electronic/dance, jam bands, the older crowd into legacy acts, a younger set into artists like MGK - and that kind of thing is really hard to do, these days. There are so few acts in each of those silos that appeal to fans of multiple of the other silos. Trying to do all that lifting at all without the budget of a Prima or a Coachella is fucking hard, which is why fests like BC and GovBall are pivoting to be more genre-focused. Trying to do in during an ongoing pandemic is probably even harder. It's like Mr. Miyagi said:
Ultimately, I'm not as down on the lineup as everybody else - I don't think it's as good as last year, 2020, or the posters my wife has on the wall from 2011 and 2012, and there are a couple of massive stinkers on there, but there's enough shit I like on the first three days for them to be really full, I fucking love Tool and am psyched to see them headline, and if Sunday's a little chiller/time to explore and just enjoy the vibes outside of All Them Witches, Tash, Herbie, and Stevie, I can live with that.

I don’t think any individual name in the top 9 is bad for Bonnaroo but there’s no cohesion and no one “everyone” can get excited about
Flume and Illennium play every damn festival all the time, 21 Savage basically only have hits when he’s with other rappers and he’s not known for good live performances, roddy ricch is a literal joke now, MGK is controversial at best, either you love him or hate him and he doesn’t really have any major hits to justify his placement, the chicks would be an interesting booking but they’re not selling any tickets to fucking Bonnaroo with the rest of the lineup
Think of how much hype there was for Tame Impala last year. Who even comes close this year?
