Bonnaroo '22: no worse than Firefly/OSL/Hangout/Gov Ball. Strong pitch.
It’s more about the pool of available bookings. I don’t think it’s often possible to just manifest big name artists out of thin air. It depends on who’s touring, who’s going to be where, etc., and all that is even more fraught in a COVID world.
I mean, again, I’m not saying this lineup rules. I totally get why people aren’t into it. I’m just saying that non of this happens in a vacuum, is all.
I’m sure being in the middle of prime European fest season doesn’t help at all either. I get planes and all, but most acts probably don’t want to be going back and forth. I’m sure they would rather have their UK/European headline shows in between their festival appearances.
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol
This isn’t, like, a butthurt Roo defense, but I’m genuinely curious: Coachella aside, is there a multi-genre fest out there this year that eats this lineup’s lunch? I’m not saying one that’s slightly better, or, like, just has better house music. I mean kind of across the board.
Overall, I feel like these kinds of fests are really not crushing it this year, lineup-wise, in general. Like, I haven’t seen one where the general consensus has been, “Damn, THAT is how you do it.” Totally correct me if I’m wrong on that.
Could be this kind of festival is either just having a down year or is going to start becoming less viable given the expanding field of smaller, more specifically-curated events
I genuinely think firefly is leagues ahead. Has much stronger headliners, especially with the rarity aspect of MCR and the star power of Dua Lipa. Then in the undercard you have acts like Jamie xx, Charli XCX, Jungle, Little Simz, Benny the Butcher, Cordae, Mannequin Pussy, Ezra Furman and Chai not to mention acts roo also has like Porter, 100 Gecs, Indigo De Souza. It rounds itself out much better imo. It doesnt hold a candle to Coachella obviously. But money aside I would pick FF over Roo if i could only do one.
Even though this is my first year not going to Osh since I started, I would argue that lineup is better as well
Being an AEG fest and in September definitely helps them in the booking department. I’m sure they do a package deal with some of the Coachella artists like Jamie, Rage (when they were on it), etc.

Honestly this lineup is solid besides the subs. They just dropped the ball on a few slots that would've made all the difference. Swap Cole for Tyler and the Chicks or Roddy Rich for Doja Cat and its great and probably about the same cost. Not a ton of eye popping acts in the undercard, but I'll still be able to fill probably 90% of my time with sets I want to see
I'm starting to get kind of excited about 2016 level attendance. We basically rolled right in through Bushy Branch Road with no wait in line at all that year. I remember me and a buddy wandered out way right up to the rail for LCD System and had no problem going over to get close for Tame right after either.
It's bad for business certainly, but it makes for a great experience that attendees will be talking about for years.

agreed, they really just missed on a couple big categories of artists
They need a genuinely relevant crossover/pop act up there like a Doja Cat, Dua Lipa, Megan the Stallion, shit maybe even Lizzo if she hits with her new track
And they need a 2000s-era rock band like an Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend or the Strokes to round things out

If no one's on the farm where do the "vibez" come from that set Bonnaroo apart from every other fest? 2016 was a ghost town at many sets, and artists could def notice it. That LCD show was amazing, but performing for maybe 20k at the What stage had to be a bummer for them.
Just speaking for myself, I've been to a decade's worth of Bonnaroo now and I had the most fun in 2016. Everyone was in such a great mood, things were easy to get to, there wasn't much of a wait for anything, there were just so many great things about it.
I know this can be eye-roll inducing, but there was just something in the air that year that gave the whole place a different kind of energy than most years. It's hard to not look at the lack of suffocating crowds as a big part of that.

My best friends been going to Roo since 2015 and always says 2016 was her favorite. Personally I'd have a great time with 100 people there, but on a business side I just look at this year as something they just have to get through.

It is in contention for my best year ever as well. 1a 1b with 2014. I think there's a major variable when it comes to festival experiences (especially camping fests) that is separate from lineup / vibez / logistics, and that variable is what I want to call "your life momentum" during probably the month or two leading up to the festival. I don't think its a coincidence that in 2014 I had just been broken up with 2 months earlier by my first love and was weeks into getting excited about being single for the first time in years, and in 2016 I had just been hired full time by the jags one month prior and the realization that I actually found a career and was going to be fine as an adult was setting in. My friend group was fire both years. Everything was just going right. Then you just launch into Roo on top of the world.
I think there are also times where you could be on the opposite end going in and a festival can kick you out of a slump in a positive way. Some years when my life is just kinda gray or in the middle, I just notice that my fest experience ends up less impactful.

at the very least Lolla has massively popular, recently relevant acts like Dua, Doja, Lil Baby. Just think about those three compared to Stevie Nicks, Chicks and Roddy Rich. I mean my god. And Metallica is so much more popular than tool. If Roo had those four swapped for Tool, Stevie, Chicks and Roddy I guarantee tickets would be in a much better spot.
not just popularity, metallica also has more of that casual appeal as a festival headliner. like you may not even like metal but you'd still be down to see them play "Enter Sandman" just to say you did. not saying the presence of metallica would sell a ticket to that person but it would like a sweetner to someone on the edge of buying a ticket, as opposed to Tool who is too scary and weird for someone primarily going to see Dua/Doja/Lil Baby*.
* not saying a dua/doja/lil baby fan couldn't be absolutely lit up by a Tool show. i'm talking more about the attraction rather than the product itself.

tool and 100 gecs are my two priorities this year and i'm worried i won't be able to do tool pit and have a good spot for 100 gecs LN. with low attendance i think this will now be possible
sunday 2016 was one of my favorite bonnaroo days. it was hot as all hell but at the which stage it was kurt vile and the violators -> father john misty -> ween then we skipped dead and co for an early start home

i had a great time at 2016 but it was arguably my least favorite roo. it was my first roo where there were significant swathes of time when i didn't have anything going on and just kind of sat around. but i agree the less dense crowd was nice, i also walked right up to the rail for LCD and the show was fantastic.
Being less crowded was great for just about everything - food, water, beer, porto lines etc were really short. easy to get good spots at shows and move from stage to stage. sometimes the huge crowds are the biggest downside to me at bonnaroo.
but the What field did feel really empty for the headliner sets. a deflating energy. you couldn't tell if you were way up close at say, LCD...but once you just moved back behind the soundboard it was totally empty and that was a bit surreal. some of the tent sets almost felt too empty, and there was a lot of sound bleed from the which to this tent because of the sparse crowds.
overall, 2016 had the best set of headliners for my tastes in years - I rarely am excited for all 3. but I think saturday? afternoon there was like a 4 or 5 hour gap of nothing.
overall, I enjoyed that the crowds were smaller, but I almost felt like it was too small. i'm sure i'll really enjoy that this year after the pandemic and not really looking forward to being in giant masses of people.
totally forgot lizzo played thursday in 2016. that was another good thursday year. waxahatchee, bully, vulfpeck, twin peaks, and cashmere cat were some that played that day

2016 was my first year and my first festival, so I still thought there was a lot of people there. Even times where I thought it was crowded. I remember at RL Grimes set I was outside the tent and thought it was packed. I think this year will atleast get to 2016 levels. I know a lot of people that don’t buy festival tickets until like a month before because they wanna make sure they can go and not deal with the hassle of reselling.

Lizzo's set remains my favorite Thursday set to date! Was such a good time. Hinds' Who Stage show was another standout for me that year.

The old crusty Roo crowd gave Bonnaroo a tonnnnnnnnn of shit for booking The Weeknd to close out the fest. Like 5 years later and we'd all be begging for them to book him, with the shit sandwich they gave us this year.
