If you're looking at the longevity of the festival and wanting better lineups, then yeah you should want the fest to be selling better. But when it comes to the experience of it, I can't imagine being with 40,000 other people and wishing there were more.
In 2016 I walked into the pit for Two Door Cinema Club. When the show started nobody even in the pit was very into it. And I know TDCC isn't the greatest band ever but that was the moment where I was like wow this sucks. I literally think the shows are more rowdy and fun when they sell the usual amount of tickets. I like my chaotic woodstock vibes

I was at Steve Gunn. His tent was pretty empty (he probably fits better at Big Ears than Bonnaroo these days anyway) and you could hear TDCC from the Which. You could tell he was pretty annoyed by the sound bleed and it really fucked up the whole vibe at that show. Even in the "thick" of the tent the bass carried. The field between This and Which was so empty, especially for a late Saturday afternoon.
Sometimes, I think I’m taking crazy pills — like, maybe their communications aren’t so bad, maybe I should give them credit, it’s still a pandemic and comms are hard in normal times. (And I suppose I do give them a little credit now because they’re actually saying something, as opposed to that year of radio silence in the first year or so of the pandemic.)
Then, they literally send an email like this, which is supposed to be a vessel forwarded to friends to help THEM sell THEIR own tickets. Ok. Fine. Tacky, dated, but I’m game. Sales are down, but I’m a brand-loyal millennial, let’s do this.
So, what’s the hook in the email to get a friend interested? A hype video? No. Some callouts to cool artists playing? No. Maybe a nod to “experiences” or why Bonnaroo is unique? No. Oh, I know, maybe the Bonnaroovian code to give you a sense of the vibes, at least? No.
The rest of the pitch isn’t actually a pitch. It’s a listing that fulfills contractual obligations to Jersey Mike’s, Allegiant, and Bacardi. Oh, but here’s the lineup unexplained and buried at the bottom, minus the campground activities which set us apart, in theory.
(I dream of starting an LLC and pitching myself to take over their comms. Let me know in the private forums if you want a share.)

It's comical how bad they are at this. I mean, I'm still going, but only because my two friends are going who I haven't seen since pre-covid. For a festival that really celebrated being the weird farm party vibe, they really fail to capitalize on that or even regularly produce content showing what separates them from other NA fests (its literally just the camping and activities that sets them apart).
I kinda get the feeling LN wouldn't be upset if the Bonnaroo brand went away, they clearly don't understand what made it special. I could see LN pivoting to multiple genre specific festivals at the farm and just doing away with the multi genre approach of Roo. They can't seem to figure out how to book a multi-genre fest anymore, just go with When We Were Young-East, EDC Farm, and Smokin Grooves-East.
I guess I’m old cause I don’t need ig vids to give me feels good get hype. I just check the countdown thread. I’m just glad they are actually posting, last year was rough. Though this years posts are lame they’ve still been posting generic stock roo things.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

Part of me wants them to kill the festival so that there's no FOMO from giving up on it. It went from aspiring to be America's Glastonbury to harder to get to Firefly.

Does anyone know for sure if the cancellation of 2021 had a direct effect on the 2022 lineup? I've always assumed so but it's just speculation, obviously.

Why should the cancelation have had an effect on the lineup? They presumably had an insurance policy and even aside from that they're backed by a giant corporate entity.

Supposedly insured for profit as well. IMO, they saw the last two sell outs and misjudged how much people just wanted to be at Roo again and tried to skimp on the lineup to juice this years profitability.

I think Bonnaroo is mostly just in a really brutal time of year for booking a festival. The two baddest European festivals are within a week of it. That's super hard to book. Maybe they skimped. But like Meg, Doja, Billie, Dua, Lorde.. a lot of these women that would have moved the needle on the lineup that people have mentioned are either at Prima or Glasto or both, and they're probably doing a bunch of other Euro dates around that.

Those are my presumptions as well, but I don't know details or how far those sort of things go, that's why I'm asking.

You're saying you assume it had an effect. I'm asking why you would assume that.

I also think they have overestimated how much the Plaza experience will have on people going. Yes, there are some decent acts ONLY playing the Plazas and Where in the Woods but not enough to generate a huge buzz.

I always wondered who the other person at this show was.
was going to list a bunch of names from both to rebut you but after looking it over I think you’re right
I was really excited about that Remain In Light set.
Yeah they didn’t go back to the stronger music side even if that’s less appreciated these days. Primus, Adrian and Jerry with Turkuaz, TDB and Oysterheqd didn’t get replaced and aren’t compensated for. That’s just rock and jam. Sure they still have some but not at that level.
