Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
You're saying you assume it had an effect. I'm asking why you would assume that.
Because the drop-off from the 20/21 lineups is remarkable, and the cancelation of the fest is the most remarkable thing to happen in that time span.
I think the dropoff from 13/14 to 2016 is fairly similar. Its almost like the booking process is completely random. Sometimes they get good lineups and sometimes they dont and they just hope itll be enough.
But you'd think one of the major festivals that's supposed to have a unique identity backed by a huge corporation would want to ensure the best possible lineup every year since it seems pretty clear no matter what they do (plazas, bathrooms, vibes etc.) ticket sales are directly correlated to the lineup and more specifically the top 10-15 names. Nobody with half a brain could look at the top 10-15 this year and think its as good as 2020.
Which really is a shame, I would've liked to go this year.
I was at Steve Gunn. His tent was pretty empty (he probably fits better at Big Ears than Bonnaroo these days anyway) and you could hear TDCC from the Which. You could tell he was pretty annoyed by the sound bleed and it really fucked up the whole vibe at that show. Even in the "thick" of the tent the bass carried. The field between This and Which was so empty, especially for a late Saturday afternoon.
I always wondered who the other person at this show was.
i was the third, lying down half asleep at the back of the tent listening to him complain between every song. you could also hear post malone from the other

Roo confuses me. They are so inconsistent. Some years they seem to completely understand who they are booking for perhaps more than any other major festival, and then the next year they seem to have no idea. It's not just the inconsistency with billing and big acts, its the inconsistency with tone.
Multi-genre festivals are harder these days as you can go to like Rolling Loud or Hulaween or whatever and get a very focused genre type lineup. But they are hardly dead - you just have to understand that you are booking an eclectic multi-genre lineup for *one* type of person, rather than many different types of people.
Coachella has a very simple assignment, very tricky execution. They are booking for the people who live in big cities who are completely in tune for "what is happening in music right now". They like seeing acts right before they explode. Timing is everything and for the most part, they have been right on with a couple major whiffs every year where an act got big billing and just didn't blow up like they should. But they have a consistent product and its reliable and seem to have an expert understanding of what is happening at this exact moment, from what acts are blowing up to what genres are new (focusing on Latin American music blowing up, for example, when no other festival understands that they should be booking it as well).
Lolla has a very simple assignment, very simple execution. They just have to book popular bands and they are catering to teenagers from the suburbrs, yuppies working in the city, etc. They can be a year or two late on a booking, they don't always have to find rappers with "indie cred", there is a high tolerance for basic (and I'm not saying that disparagingly), but also its a big enough city with a huge arts scene that there is appreciation for rare bookings when they happen and those bands will get a good crowd.
Roo has a very tricky assignment with tricky execution, from an outsiders perspective. Their attendees don't seem to require anything relating to "timing", their attendees are perhaps the most open minded about genre, but their attendees like "weird" and "left of center" and what fits into that category is very subjective. It's so hard to define but "you know it when you see it". 2020 they nailed it - they are pitching to the attendee who knows Tool albums but would dance to Miley Cyrus and who grew up on bluegrass and country from their parents and still dig it, but also like Denzel Curry.
This year's problem is that it's so safe on the top lines, but "safe" at Roo is "unsafe" - weird is "safe". It feels like whoever booking this fest doesn't always get subjective differences in genre - "we need a rapper, 21 Savage and Roddy Rich are rappers, let's just get them, right?" When the attendees would probably much rather have Vince Staples, Baby Keem, and Megan Thee Stallion. Lane 8 is a perfect electronic booking for Roo - but then they book Black Tiger Sex Machine like "our guests want dubstep and bass music, so...these are the guys with the funny masks, right? That makes them a special act, right?" They went for LANY, CHVRCHES, War on Drugs, Lord Huron - mostly great bands (I can't stand LANY) but so unexciting as a group - why not go for Khruangbin, Turnstile, and Maggie Rogers instead? "Emo is popular right? Uhh what's an emo band? All Time Low is an emo band? Are they good enough? Let's just grab them". Like they seem to have no idea of what they are doing.
2020 has so much connectivity between the genres, this lineup makes no sense for me. Why does a Flume fan care about The Chicks? Why does a 21 Savage fan want to see Stevie Nicks? I totally get that there is somebody out there that wants to see Tool, Miley, Bassnectar (well before the shitstorm), and Lana all in the same weekend, that's why 2020 tickets flew. I don't know who the fuck these top lines are for.
And then their logistics are a fucking mess! I go on their website and I don't even see their lineup on the front page. WTF? If I'm considering going why am I not assaulted with the bands that are actually playing the fest as the first thing I see?
I really hope they don't fold as a fest, but I just don't understand how they have fallen so fast in comparison to Coachella - 2013 and 2014, their lineups were like *right* there together. You'd like one over to other based on genre of course, but they were completely comparable. 2020 was *right* there, not as strong as other fests but perfectly tailored in a way that it didn't really matter. But then this is like...Bottlerock could put this on. Hangout could put this on. I just don't get it. Because those fests *couldn't* put together a lineup like 2020 and 2021.
Roo can do it when they want to, they just don't always.
Hope this doesn't read as a hater post - I just want this fest to succeed because I want all these fests to succeed.

The funny thing is, for me, the first couple of names on each day this year are actually an improvement over last year, with the exception of Sunday.
I’d rather see Tool than Foos.
I’d rather see J. Cole than Tyler.
I’d rather see Stevie Nicks than Lizzo.
I’d rather see Flume than Megan thee Stallion.
Lana Del Rey and the Chicks are a bit of a wash, but I’d give a slight edge to the Chicks just because I find Lana super-sleepy.
I’d rather see Tame Impala than MGK by about a million percent, so that’s a huge drop-off. And last year’s second lines were better for my tastes than this year’s…but really not by that much, if I break it down.
2nd line highlights last year: RTJ, Janelle, MMJ, Isbell, Phoebe Bridgers, Leon Bridges, Brittany Howard
2nd line highlights this year: Plant & Krauss, Lord Huron, TWOD, Billy Strings, CHVRCHES, Rebillet, Herbie Hancock, Puscifer
And I think this year’s Thursday will be pretty stacked for me relative to last year’s. Honestly, if there were something better in place of the giant MGK/Roddy Ricch stinkbomb on Sunday, I’d be pretty down with this thing, soup to nuts.
So…yeah. It seems the secret to enjoying Bonnaroo this year will be to have terrible, old man taste, like I do.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 11/18 - Slowdive @ Brooklyn Paramount 11/21 - Caribou @ Avant Gardner 11/23 - LCD Soundsystem @ Knockdown Center 11/25 - TV on the Radio @ Webster Hall 12/5 - LCD Soundsystem @ Knockdown Center 12/7 - LCD Soundsystem @ Knockdown Center

I’ll see your terrible old man taste and raise you a “Why TF is Rebillet on the second line?????”
I don't think anyone here's really debatin' that the top names are the problem this year.
I would debate that all day. This is Tool's only festival billing for a reason, Stevie is a legend, and J cole is one of the biggest hip hop/rap artists there is right now.

tool plays butt rock festivals all the time
What other festival is Tool playing this year? Also if you think Tool is butt rock of any kind you're in for quite a surprise come Saturday night when they open a new dimension. Their set will be one of the best in Roo history.

You pretty much answered most of your own questions; it's a mixed genre fest, that's why..... I don't know what the world record is for high fives but I'm gonna try and break it.
I'm afraid you're wrong and don't really know what butt rock is.
We have had many meeting of the butt rock to decide what butt rock is on this forum so I'm afraid you're wrong. I know it's a tough thing to learn, take all the time you need.

Nothing to learn. If Nickelback is butt rock then Tool can also not be butt rock by default. I just don't think one of the most psychedelic rock bands in history is anything remotely close to said butt rock.

Yeah sorry man I love Tool but they definitely fall into a Venn diagram with other butt rock acts. I'm not saying they are 100% butt rock but they absolutely have strong butt rock elements to their songs. And that's OK! Butt rock is very popular for a reason, it's fun and good to scream during a wicked heavy breakdown.
Many years ago I had a friend who was dumb as rocks. He didn't have a credit card nor did he understand computers so I would buy his tickets for him and he would pay me cash. He exclusively saw buttrock bands: Shinedown, disturbed, Korn, etc. And of course Tool. One day he told me "man what I really like about tool is when the music gets all heavy and Maynard goes like 'rrrraaaaaawwwwwrrrrd'!!!" And I was like "hell yeah man I like that too."

On another note, I just saw an ad for the late night, and noticed that Saturday has 8 acts listed but Friday has only 6. Think that bodes really well for both Goose and King Gizz to get long, 2+ hour sets

The graphic that's on their site only has 7 on Saturday which I think is the same as what they originally announced. Who did they add?
