I like RTJ in the Sahara or the Outdoor. They would make solid Doja counter programming. I’m not going to be surprised if Doja Cat has the largest crowd of the weekend.
I’ve seen RTJ a bunch of times and was planning on skipping but the prospect of them playing Sahara may require me to see them again.
Very curious to see how they schedule 9 rap acts (10 including Doja) on the shortest day with one being the headliner.
Sunday 2018 had 12 (13 if you count 6lack, 14 if you count Jidenna) with one being a headliner
For sport I did how many conflicts among the genre and who. Conflict rules being 30 mins of your act is within the hour Eminem vs Barclay 10-11 Kamiyah vs Migos (9-10) Princess Nokia (8-9) Jidenna vs 6lack (7-8) French Montana vs Cardi B (6-7) Russ vs Amine vs Dej Loaf (4-5) Noname (2-3) Westside Gunn & Conway (1-2)
Tough call. I don't think Channel Tres will be in the Sahara personally. Vince is someone who could end up on the Outdoor since he's already played Sahara (old Sahara) and Main, his newest album is pretty laid back so who knows. J.I.D. is pretty flexible too, he could fit in the Mojave but he could also end up early outside.
I can see them giving Denzel Curry a spot outside around 5 like JPEG had. Most of the hiphop here is pretty flexible, unlike 2019 where you just KNEW a YG was in the Sahara.
But sidenote: low billing aside, Griselda won't be playing that early on the Outdoor. They'll give them a good time slot somewhere, they deserve it
Channel Tres seems screamingly obvious to move out, even separate from the conversation we're having about moving RTJ in. He's destined for a tent.
I also don't love us having Chanel Tres in the Sahara, but if we move him out we have to move someone in. RtJ could make sense, if people think that's the call, I'll make it happen.
Griselda will be in a (non Sahara) tent some time between 330-8
If this is the case, I don't see a way they aren't up against another hip-hop act. There's just so much of it on Sunday...any suggestions?
I don’t think we HAVE to, there’s 8 hip hop acts that have to play before 10pm. That’s 9 hours. But as long as it’s not Denzel or Vince it’s fine. Those 3 are the blog rapper darlings lol. I could totally see Griselda in a tent during Joji btw
Coachella has been really bad about loaded up too much of one genre on a single day the past few Coachellas. I really hope they move 2 Sunday rap acts to Saturday.
The worst part is almost all of Sunday's rappers have the same fan base. Vince, Denzel, RTJ, J.I.D., Griselda are pretty much the same fanbase. And it wouldn't be far fetched to say Maxo Kream is too. Kanye is Kanye so pretty much throw him in there too. The only outliers are Doja Cat and DAVE. They should at least mix it up between pop/radio rappers and more internet/underground rappers so there's less conflict.
Edit: If I'm not mistaken, Coachella takes user's favorite artists on the Coachella app into consideration when doing set times right? Think they'll see enough people adding the same rappers to go "Oh.. we gotta shuffle a couple of these acts to different days"?
I could see something like Maxo Kream getting 3pm in a tent, JID 4pm and Denzel 5pm-ish back to back in the Sahara. Vince 6pm-ish Outdoor, RTJ 7:30-ish Sahara, Griselda 8:40 Mojave and end with enough time for people to migrate to Kanye.
Dave, Belly, Doja can conflict with any of those rappers with no issue
I have a feeling Maggie is gonna close the Outdoor, but that would suck for me because Maggie and Ye are my top 2 this day and I'd want to get a decent spot for Ye lol
This happened to me in 2019 with H.E.R. and Ariana, couldn't miss H.E.R. and ended up towards the back for Ari lol
Honestly I wouldn't overthink these rap conflicts. The rap acts didn't use to conflict almost ever because there were only a few on any day when indie rock was the king - now hip-hop is the king of the music world and thus Coachella - just like how indie rock bands would conflict with each other, so will rappers with the same fanbase now. 2018 had so many rappers with the same fanbase playing against each other already. I think it is a good idea to make sure rappers on the 2nd/3rd line don't conflict with each other but I really see no reason why Maxo Kream and JID can't play at the same time, or whatever.
Also RTJ in the Sahara would just be fucking NUTS and I'd be jealous to miss that. They clearly were destined for main stage at one point in time when RATM was on the bill so just depends on if that was in their contract or they'd still push for it, but they took the billing demotion in stride so...

I guess I could see it, but would be pretty crushed if IDLES played that early on the Outdoor (as we have it in the Clashfinder). Their set would work so much better in a tent in the late afternoon/night time.

RTJ’s energy would be 10 times better in the Sahara by sheer nature of what their music is like. At this point I’m fairly convinced that’s where they’ll be. They’re also just not nearly as big as some of the other main stage acts we were considering; they got their 2020 billing because of Rage IMO and then couldn’t be dropped too far from there for this year.
Moved RtJ to the Sahara (bumped down Duck Sauce), Vince Staples and Yola to the Outdoor, Griselda to a slightly later slot in the Gobi, as well as some other less notable changes that I forgot to keep track of as I was making them.
I feel like RTJ would be fine with Sahara placement. Their mainstage set in 2016 didn't have good energy.
Why would it be better in the Sahara?
I much rather see Joji or even Jamie than RTJ before Doja and Kanye
Have you been in the new Sahara? Energy is through the roof in that thing. With how hard hitting El-P's beats are, they are perfect for the Sahara. Plus being on the mainstage brings a lot of casual fans and people who don't know who you are. They might just be camping for the act after you. If you're in a tent, almost everyone is there specifically for you and will know all your songs

Finneas strikes me as a terrible tent closer generally but also they won’t want to risk embarrassing a headliner’s brother/songwriter with a terrible crowd vs Kanye. He strikes me as mid afternoon or sunset ish

Couldn’t agree more. FINNEAS seems like the type of act getting like a 5 or 6 PM set on the Outdoor or Mojave IMO

I think even against Kanye, Finneas would draw a sizeable crowd. Think about how many people will be there mostly for Billie, and then think about where every single one of those people will be during Finneas the following night.
That being said, I'm not glued to him closing vs Kanye and can make that change if people think it's smart. My main thought behind it though was most people who care about seeing Finneas probably don't care too too much to see Kanye.
I think that logic applies better to Kim Petras than Finneas. But Fred again also makes a lot of sense as much as I want that to not happen.
On Friday, I still think we have Still Woozy in way too prime of a spot. He's not going to play the Outdoor at golden hour. (EDIT: I looked up his streams and I'm sort of shocked. I'm coming around to the idea that he can play there).
Also, do we have a reason for thinking Arooj Aftab will be in the Sonora? She wasn't on it last time, like most of the artists, and she's also booked for This Ain't No Picnic (at least implying that she wasn't booked through Rene). Seems like early afternoon Gobi/Mojave, like we had her before.
