Yeah I remember thinking Cirez D would never fit in the Yuma and I was so wrong, there was a lot of room. The Yuma isn't exactly small, and I can't see PDM filling up the Sahara at Coachella, not even close.
Yeah, you're probably right. I knew he was huge, but I didn't realize he was 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify huge. Moved him to a later Yuma slot on the clashfinder.
Disagree about him being bigger than Chris Lake at the time. He’s still only billed as the 6th highest Yuma act that day and it’s pretty unlikely he’ll play after the names on the 4th line. Sure he’s got Spotify plays but his social media followers fall behind Peggy Gou, The Martinez Brothers and Damian Lazarus. Spotify listeners aren’t the end all be all for popularity like people think it is.
It’s not like he instantly sold out his Localchella show either, tickets are still available for that. Remember that set times are less about how we feel about crowd size and more about what the artist and their team will ask for. For example, Damian Lazarus, Honey Dijon and Dixon have higher ticket prices for their Sound shows. That probably suggests they’ll ask for a later time than someone like Purple Disco Machine.
When we're talking about bookings for venues in SF (I do booking work with 1015 Folsom, Midway, Halcyon and Public Works) the metrics that they care more about these days tends to be the number of monthly Spotify plays, as it gives a better idea of current value VS social media numbers that could be higher than others due to how long they have been in the scene. Now this could be totally different for Coachella of course, and they may look at social media numbers first and foremost while caring less about average monthly Spotify plays. But I also think he is much much bigger than Damian Lazarus or Artbat, and would make a lot of sense for him to get later billing.
PDM in 2022 is definitely bigger than Chris Lake was in 2019. Chris Lake may have sold out the Shrine for his Localchella show in 2019, but that's 100% because Fisher was also on that bill.

Spotify plays can still be manipulated and has to be taken into context. I know that’s a go-to metric for agents to point out their monthly listeners but it isn’t that simple. There are plenty of artists who have tons of listens but it doesn’t equate to actual tickets they can sell. There’s still a value that has to be determined behind those listens and it’s never easy to figure out.
Regardless, that’s a whole separate discussion. PDM’s billing doesn’t suggest he’ll be one of the last Yuma acts and billing historically has been the best indicator of set time placement. This is a schedule that we’re trying to predict, not a schedule of what we feel works best, otherwise many people here wouldn’t even have PDM in the Yuma to begin with.
FYI I myself am working on a sheet that averages stage/time historically and making a set time prediction off that data. Just doing it for fun but I can post it here if people are interested.
Streams mean that people listen to the songs, not that they would prioritize seeing that act. Alessia Cara’s steaming numbers were off the ducking charts the year she played, like easily top 10 for the fest that year, and comfortably played the Gobi. Just because PDM had songs that everybody put in playlists doesn’t mean that those people have him as their #1 especially after 5:00. I do think he’s cheesy, super fun awesome cheesy albeit, and would rather see him in Sahara but he could play Yuma.

Any chance we think Spiritualized headlines the Sonora on Friday? He’s playing a smaller venue than I expected here in Phoenix. I know we all expect his set to not be crowded, so I wonder if this is an option for him.

nah, Spiritualized has perfect "rock music for the old heads during the pop headliner" energy
which sucks because I really want to see both Harry Styles and Spiritualized, and I'm pretty sure that won't be possible

The show near me is also at a small venue but it’s billed as “An evening with Spiritualized” which makes me think it will be an acoustic thing

Typically the phrase “an evening with” just means no opener.

I’ve debated this in my head. Originally RATM was supposed to play that slot so Spiritualized wasn’t going to go against them. I’ll be interested to see if one or two of the rock acts pivots their time like you’re suggesting to now go against Harry from what Paul originally envisioned. I kind of thought Spiritualized would play earlier in the day similar to Ride in 2015 originally, but could see them getting placed against Harry now.
Of all the headliners, Harry Styles seems most likely to pull the old head rock fan audience that would be the big Spiritualized demo. Hopefully there's not an overlap.
On an unrelated note, it seems like Spirtualized typically plays all new album songs at their shows. Is that likely to be the case for this one?

Yeah that was my feeling as well. Harry's poppy, but he's still a rock headliner relatively speaking. Also I as a relatively old rock head would be bummed to figure out that conflict.
I can see the temptation to put Spiritualized late, but they must have learned from Real Estate, Jagwar Ma, etc that putting anything remotely indie and smaller in a tent after 7:30 or so just leads to an empty tent in this day and age. I like the Ride treatment suggestion.

FWIW, Ride was one of the emptiest tents I've ever seen at Coachella. But in that case, they put them on at the same time as War on Drugs played the mainstage -- so if anything that just emphasizes the need to minimize conflicts with an underserved genre. (This also hurt Real Estate, given they dumped RE at the same time as Radiohead).

I dunno, the Sonora idea has legs. Spiritualized is gonna draw flies unfortunately.
it's not been around that long so we only have 3 years of precedent, but I think it's always been done by 9 or so
I think it went kind of late the Saturday of 2018 and stopped right before Beyoncé. That said, I think those sets were really poorly attended too. It felt like the 2019 Sonora placement increased traffic substantially from 2018 and 2017. Hopefully they continue to keep it there. I also think the Sonora lineup is pretty solid this year and will have more than a couple sets with decent crowds.
