I mean - Tame Impala is barely rock at this point and rock bands drew well last year.
I think the main issue was not so much the lack of a rock headliner, but that you had a megastar, one of Coachella's biggest headliners *ever*, that was known to the general public before pre-sale began. I don't think that had ever happened before at Coachella, and consequently I have never seen such a high concentration of attendees who came for just one act. The same thing may have happened to rappers and R&B singers that year if Led Zeppelin had announced a two-off reunion show before pre-sale began.
I guessssss that sort of happened this year with RATM but by the same principle, if you were just coming for RATM you probably sold your tickets already, or are still hoping to.
I think the days of rock bands being viable #2s is pretty much done but there's no question that the "known headliner factor" would screw over any act that was on the polar opposite side of the music spectrum.
Agreed. Beyonce year was an anomaly all around for everyone, not just rock. Even R&B crowds suffered that year. Beyonce fans weren't there for R&B, they were there for Beyonce only. They kind of just half-assed strolled around the festival for the rest of the weekend. Very few acts pulled great crowds that weekend besides the headliners. I actually carpooled into Indio with a Beyonce fan that year and she didn't care about anyone else on the lineup from what our conversation implied. Hardly even knew anyone else besides the huge mainstream names.

Haven’t been following this too closely but kinda underrated how that Saturday schedule is the worst possible one you can come up with. I’ll be steamed if it’s anywhere close to that.

I'll toss out a few, since I haven't looked at this in awhile. I'd be very surprised to see Hot Chip on as early as 5:55. Japanese Breakfast in the dead heat outdoors seems like a miss. 100 gecs doesn't need a 7:10 start time, they strike me more as a Let's Eat Grandma 3pm tent set. And didn't we get a girl in red main stage confirmation at some point?
Some moves I'd make without thinking too much about it:
Switch girl in red with Hot Chip
Switch Japanese Breakfast with Koffee and then Freddie Gibbs with JB
Switch Rina Sawayama with 100 gecs (and maybe then switch Rina with Turnstile and then Turnstile with Caroline Polachek, so it's Gecs - Turnstile - Caroline with Rina late)
I know not all of those track entirely with billing, but they all seem like better placements for each of those acts than we've got right now.
Anyway, bitching without offering improvements is lame.

The Girl in Red rumor was just BS, but I do think she ends up on the main regardless. I agree with all of these suggestions. 100 Gecs played super early at Buku a couple weeks back. I originally thought they’d play later in the evening, but now thinking somewhere between 3-5 makes sense.
I mean all respect and love to Mikey but the Saturday problems start with having Holly Humberstone and Chelsea Cutler opening up the main which is never going to happen.

Wasn't sure what the Double Happiness thing really was Is there a reason why City Girls is closing the Sahara? lol I realllllyyyy would like to swap Snoh Aalegra and Still Woozy. I think that would be perfect placement for both of them.

I made this as a wildcard bet a few pages ago - whether Mikey changed this because of that or had the same idea independently, I don't know.
But - the biggest artists do not always close the Sahara. Last year Kayzo closed Friday and NGHTMRE closed Sunday...they were not close to the biggest act in the tent that day.
Saturday was just an odd day with Kid Cudi closing because Tame Impala ended so early on the main.
I just don't get the logic why Big Sean, the highest billed act that day, is a shoe in to close the tent when last year the highest billed Sahara acts have been starting between 7:00 and 9:30. See - YG, Diplo, Gryffin, BLACKPINK, JUICEWRLD, Dillon Francis, etc last year.
