I think this confirms the Mohave upgrade. Madeon has to be playing in there now.
I don't think this means Madeon has to be in the Mojave. I made changes to the Friday clashfinder, putting the Hu on the Outdoor, bumping Madeon up and moving a few things around to make it make sense. Madeon was also initially confirmed to be on the Outdoor in 2020.
We have had plenty of curveballs over the year but this is fucking absurd.
But...hear me out...
I am also inclined to think this could mean the Mojave was upgraded to old Sahara size and that it will host larger acts than in the past, which perhaps means the outdoor will host some smaller acts than typical.
Nobody would have pegged The Hu and Hot Chip for outdoor acts. And yet here we are.
I am wondering if Stromae, Giveon, Anitta, Madeon, etc acts might be headed for Mojave this year.

The 40 minute set time doesn’t surprise me. I think you’ll see 40 - 60 minutes spread fairly regularly instead of just a consistent 50 minutes across the board. Felt like it started to do that in 2019 a little. Wouldn’t be surprised if KGATLW got 60 minutes.
The logic of moving Stromae, Anitta, and Madeon to the Mojave is intriguing and I’ve been playing with this concept of putting all of the upbeat tent acts in there if indeed the production will be significantly scaled up. What’s weird about this is is goes against everything we thought Paul wanted. I thought he wanted to control the crowds by putting different types of music at different stages which generated constant movement. It feels like this suggestion is just going to result in the EDM/Hip Hop lite crowd all being in the Mojave.
If the Mojave is upgraded I am not sure it's for genre reasons. Sahara is already less of a "genre" stage than it used to be, with EDM, rap, and now K-Pop in there, for one thing. Mojave could just be larger acts - for example, no reason we couldn't have Danny Elfman in there, or some of the bigger R&B artists.
It is just really odd to me to have The Hu, a sixth line act, and Hot Chip, a fourth line act, taking up so much primetime on the outdoor, especially when we have semi-confirmed that the Mojave is indeed at minimum in a different shape than in the past.
Perhaps for crowd control reasons, Paul T wanted big acts spread apart on the grounds rather than all clustered in the entry and the northern part of the grounds?

I'm too lazy to check, but which acts in the past have started after 5 PM, who also played less than 45 minutes?
I think the Mojave will still have plenty of genre variety, but this could set it up to have some of those bigger dance acts in the 9pm-close range.
Considering we already have Lane 8 confirmed for that, this would make sense....though I'm not sure which bigger dance acts would make sense to go in there vs the Sahara.

Lol I’m not going perform an analysis, but just looking at Friday of 2019, JPEGMAFIA got 40 minutes and started at 5:00 on the outdoor. Another head scratcher placement for sure. Ella Mai also only got 40 minutes on the outdoor that day and started after 7:00.

Huh, okay, that's enough for me. I'll shorten their set.
Is there a reason why City Girls is closing the Sahara? lol
I made this as a wildcard bet a few pages ago - whether Mikey changed this because of that or had the same idea independently, I don't know.
But - the biggest artists do not always close the Sahara. Last year Kayzo closed Friday and NGHTMRE closed Sunday...they were not close to the biggest act in the tent that day.
Saturday was just an odd day with Kid Cudi closing because Tame Impala ended so early on the main.
I just don't get the logic why Big Sean, the highest billed act that day, is a shoe in to close the tent when last year the highest billed Sahara acts have been starting between 7:00 and 9:30. See - YG, Diplo, Gryffin, BLACKPINK, JUICEWRLD, Dillon Francis, etc last year.
I don't think Big Sean is closing the Sahara, either. I personally think it'll be Baby Keem. He's not necessarily big but has a lot of interest. City Girls just seems mad weird to me idk lol, but it's possible. Each year the stage and time placements get less orthodox.

I'm starting to think someone like Daniel Caesar is getting plopped into the Mojave. Even if he's 4th on his day.

Perhaps a hot take: The Hu on the outdoor at 7pm will be pretty rad if it happens, though I really hope there's minimal if any overlap with Phoebe.
I wonder if we could see some sort-of left field acts thrown in the Mojave if it has Sahara production - The Avalanches, 100 gecs, Emotional Oranges, Griselda would all be interesting there. A lot of the acts we already have there would be more interesting. Maybe we will get someone like Jamie XX there instead of the Outdoor.
Of all the years we've attempted this fool's gambit, this is the most foolish.
Acts like this seem even more in play for “live” sets if the Mojave is indeed getting additional production capabilities. Obviously far from a confirmation that he’s outside the Yuma, but I do appreciate that our most spirited debate this year is if a 5th line artist is playing the Yuma or not.
Maybe there’s gonna be surprise additions? Probably not, but one can only dream.
Dont think there were ever true indications of Pixies and Julian Casablancas being added until the schedule came out when they played. Rex Orange County was added onto the schedule in 2018 and most people didnt know it was him til they said something.

Jamiroquai was in Mojave despite being 4th so its not that far fetched. New Order same deal in 2017. James Bay was at the end of the first line in 2016 and was in Mojave at 4:30.

Pixies - there were no indications but I remember having a really strong hunch they were going to be "late added". I don't remember if that was just my opinion or the boards. I think it had something to do with tour dates that almost clearly signaled they were going to be at Coach from the get go, and those tour dates stayed the same or some other thing like that. What I suspect happened with Pixies is that they were always booked but they had a dispute about billing so GV sort of said, "fuck it, why don't we just leave you off the poster and you are still playing", or perhaps the negotiations were not finalized by the poster but far enough along that the dates were routed around Coachella, and they just left them as a surprise.
Nicolas Jaar and Julian Casablancas were real surprises that year.
Skepta was announced on the book that was delivered with the passes.
Still think the Lady Gaga thing is overblown and she was just going to be a guest at Tchami's set given that he produced the single she was going to perform with Ari. Like how Anderson Paak bringing out Dre to do 3-4 songs as a mini set in 2016, not an actual standalone Lady Gaga set on the main or whatever.

But it wasn’t a surprise set
I wonder what Coachella act will drop out. Don’t think we’ve had any year with 100% of the artists from the original lineup. Don’t we have a DJ duo from Ukraine?
I’m just commenting that it’s kinda weird to describe Dr Dre’s Coachella appearance as just a guest spot with Anderson Paak.
Anyway, I think Gaga getting announced Sunday Service style in 2020 because ticket sales were incredibly weak is just as likely as any other scenario. They seems to have a habit of adding at least someone notable almost every year.

ARTBAT is from Ukraine, but I’m pretty sure they’ve been playing shows recently. Doesn’t seem like we’re seeing near the travel visa issues we witnessed last year which is good. I for one was worried about that.
Regarding the Lady Gaga rumor I too think it would have been a mini set during Tchami’s scheduled set time. Then again, wasn’t Deadmau5 supposed to play a secret set with his enhanced cube show in 2020 too? I that was the case then maybe it’s possible then planned to do two bigger surprises. One for each weekend
Looking at the set times as they are I honestly don’t see really any way to add any true surprise sets at this point unless they are adding a new stage. Set times are pretty full as it is.

That's not remotely the point I was making, that an NWA reunion was not important. "Lady Gaga was set to do a surprise set at Coachella" does not mean it was a standalone set - Dr. Dre did a "surprise set" at Coachella in 2016...at somebody else's show. Kanye during The Weeknd, same thing. Which is what I am getting at, I bet that was what Lady Gaga was going to do. I am not sure how this has blossomed into this "Lady Gaga was going to do her own set at Coachella" when many artists have done surprise mini-sets at other shows already.
I also don't get the "adding somebody notable almost every year" - Sunday Service in 2019, the Pixies in 2014, and??? Skepta in 2017 was sick but that's hardly a huge ad. Adding Lady Gaga as a surprise - a former headliner and would still be a headliner - would be pretty fucking unprecedented.
