LCD would def fill up the new Mojave, just like they filled up the old Sahara 15 years ago. If theyre counter programming there will be a sizeable crowd to where they ended up.
Let’s play a game. I’m going to name 15 “legacy” rock bands and tag where I think they’d be placed on poster, which stage they’d fit, and what expected crowd size would be relative to stage. Would welcome others to do the same thing. This would be a nice sample of who we think could pull well in 2023.
RHCP - headliner - main stage close - large crowd
Foo Fighters - headliner/not close - medium crowd
Green Day - sub - main stage - small/medium crowd
Incubus - second/third line - sunset outdoor - medium crowd
SOAD - second line - outdoor night - large crowd
NIN - second line - Mojave night - large crowd
Limp Bizkit - second line - main day - medium crowd
Phoenix - second line - outdoor night - medium crowd
Metallica - headliner - main/close - medium crowd
Muse - second line - outdoor night - small/medium crowd
The cure - sub - outdoor night - small/medium crowd
Iron Maiden - second line - mojave night - large crowd
Depeche Mode - sub - outdoor night - small/medium crowd
LCD Soundsystem - second line - Mojave night - large crowd
The Killers - sub - main night - medium crowd
This post gave me a headache with how out of touch it is lol. Foo Fighters had an upcoming tour playing football stadiums. They would 100% close the night. NIN is at worst a sub. Green Day is likely a headliner. The Killers have headlined every fest they’ve played forever and would be a headliner at Coachella is booked. Muse had headliner fairly recently and would be no lower than a sub. Iron Maiden is headline or bust if they played.
Foo fighters played outside lands in 2012 as the 5th act on the poster. Foo fighters certainly could close the main but I feel like they’d get a bigger crowd and would benefit from not closing. Nine inch nails subbing and putting them on the main stage would be a miscalculation by the festival. No one wants to see a poorly attended mismatched stage placement. We’ve don’t this way to many times. Fuck bill them as a sub for the poster but put them in the Mojave or outdoor. Green Day is not a coachella headliner, they aren’t even top 3 billed at lollapalooza. Get real. Iron Maiden headlining will never happen. So only shot of them being on the poster is as a sub or second line. Muse probably wouldn’t like the demotion so an arcade fire like surprise would be most likely.

First: that Foo Fighters billing in 2012 was an aberration, one of the most stacked top lines for a festival in memory that happened in part because Dave wanted to open for Neil Young.
Second: in the same paragraph you use OSL as an example (poorly) you claim Green Day isn't a headliner when they were JUST announced as a headliner at OSL.

LCD should get the bottom of the poster/returning to the desert treatment. Make it some kind of DFA thing, announce it with Despacio. They can overbill/overpay Murphy for a Yuma set. LCD gets 90 minutes closing Outdoor.

Better yet, DFA Records takeover in the Yuma one entire day. Dont know where you could even place Despacio now without turning it into a shitshow.
Bands like Paramore or System of a Down, that are on the strong sub/light headliner border line, would look fine as a Friday headliner if the other two headliners are really strong. Plus as someone mentioned, certain acts get a boost in certain regions. SOAD is a headliner in California but probably not in the South or East Coast.
I mentioned this awhile ago with the whole "would people still care about a Dr. Dre headliner set" and I say, at a California fest, it's a no brainer. Other regions probably wouldn't care nearly as much about Dre but he will always be a hot ticket in Cali.
Sidenote: Glass animals was really fun at Denzel Curry's set.
I mean, contrarian take - and admittedly from just looking at the streams and so I may be off on crowd sizes due to camera angles - I think the bigger rock and indie bands did fine this year. Both Girl in Red and Japanese Breakfast clearly packed the Mojave to the gills, IDLES looked like they filled the Mojave halfway which is honestly pretty impressive given that it is the old Sahara, Wallows had a big crowd, Maneskin had a big crowd. And all this with no big "real" rock band on the headliner or second lines.
Then the smaller indie acts like The Marias, beabadoobee, Orville Peck, The Regrettes all filled the Gobi up.
No idea about the Sonora - wouldn't be terribly surprised if that was struggling as it has been.
There's no question that somebody Glass Animals would have an absolutely enormous crowd on the main stage if they were booked right now.
I agree with this take. Predominantly non-rock names towards the top of the lineup, but the more traditional band setups generally had great crowds IMO. Not all huge, but much larger or higher energy than I was expecting for the sets before 9-10 PM or so. The later shows like Maneskin and King Gizz were decent sized but everyone seemed a little sleepier. About 15 minutes in, I thought we were getting punished/rewarded? with a full hour just noodling around on Rattlesnake haha.
Saw something like 1/3 of the sets in Sonora and honestly seemed like the tent had a great year. I usually do weekend 2, so possibly it's just generally more crowded everywhere? But still, several unexpectedly large crowds like Skeggs and Ela Minus (100% a Sonora highlight). I also thought stuff like Altin Gun, Crumb, Beach Goons, and Mannequin Pussy maybe didn't have similarly huge attendance but were still crowded and the energy was great. Black MIDI was probably the biggest surprise. Not a lot of competition in their time slot around 8 PM, but the crowd seemed tiny and low energy compared to what they were throwing down. Lots of Schlagenheim cuts though, which was a treat!
Only somewhat related, but really hoping that the Arcade Fire set time strategy unintentionally becomes a thing for future iterations. I'm sure it's been pointed out but stuff like LCD Soundsystem/Phoenix/SOAD around or just past sunset would be a great counterbalance to booking younger, poppier acts that bring in new attendees and contribute to the fest's cultural longevity. At 30, my legs just can't make it through camping and full days of dancing with gas left in the tank for jumping around at late night sets.
Definitely trying to manifest a 2-3 hour Springsteen "headlining" set next year on the Outdoor starting around sunset.

Dre & Snoop headline every NA multi genre festival.
If Dre and Snoop took the halftime show or the coachella set on tour it would sell out everywhere. People were begging and hoping the coachella performance couldve been toured. And it still resonates today.

Coachella headliners these days 100% have more scrutiny and more attention to them then any other festival. For you to headline Coachella, you have to be a big get, or be a reunion, or be a group that climbed the ranks (tame Impala). Didn’t contradict myself, but nice try

Lcd climbed the ranks. Arcade Fire, the weeknd, Calvin harris. , The black keys did too. Theres a few who played once and then went to headliner though next time around. ( billie, the killers, blur, kanye, kendrick, muse ) Its gonna be ridiculous if it gets to the point that Olivia Rodrigo will be a headliner after 2 albums and one other tour in a couple years cause she aint gonna play unless its that now.

Yeah shed probably be a sub if she played next year. And my comment on headliners is more of a comment on recent Coachella’s, 9 years ago isn’t recent.

Yeah, we wouldn’t want someone like Frank Ocean headlining with only two albums.

Its more of somebody who literally just started their career 18 months ago and will get to headline cauze agents will demand it. Not somebody that has been making music for over a decade and is an elusive performer.

Frank is theoretically releasing a new album whenever he plays, is he not? That would make three.
The only times Coachella's booked an artist with fewer than three albums to headline were Stone Roses (a reunion) and last minute replacements. I think they're generally really interested in having headliners who've established themselves for the long run and that are not a flash in the pan. That said, artists explode so quickly these days that it might be tough to maintain that.

Billie may not have been the original plan, but she was on the original 2022 poster. I don't think that deserves an asterisk. There's no real question as to whether or not she was ready to headline. Time to put the 3 album rule to bed.

Ariana Grande was on the original 2019 poster but she was still a last minute replacement. I would bet they were planning on Billie for 2023 with another album. But we'll never know for sure.
At the least, like I said, artists explode more quickly these days and there will be more and more temptation to book acts earlier in their careers. I'd demote it from a "rule" to "guidance." Still can't see Olivia Rodrigo headlining this thing anytime soon (next two festivals) though, would bet a beer on that.
