Billie may not have been the original plan, but she was on the original 2022 poster. I don't think that deserves an asterisk. There's no real question as to whether or not she was ready to headline. Time to put the 3 album rule to bed.
Ariana Grande was on the original 2019 poster but she was still a last minute replacement. I would bet they were planning on Billie for 2023 with another album. But we'll never know for sure.
At the least, like I said, artists explode more quickly these days and there will be more and more temptation to book acts earlier in their careers. I'd demote it from a "rule" to "guidance." Still can't see Olivia Rodrigo headlining this thing anytime soon (next two festivals) though, would bet a beer on that.
Not willing to bet on Olivia Rodrigo specifically, but I'd bet there's a 2 album headliner on one of the next two posters. Last time we talked 3 album rule, I said Billie or Cardi would break it in the short term, and I feel pretty good about how that shook out.

it may not be next year or the year after but Khruangbin definitely would be a wonderful headliner at some point. theyre getting there judging by their recent lineup placements and venues

two two-album headliners this year
Both last minute replacements, not the intended headliners. And Harry has 1D albums, so I'd consider him in the 3-album club as far as his total music output. Plus Harry has a third solo album out soon.

You can’t keep saying artists that were on the poster drop are “last minute replacements.” Artists drop out at the last minute all the time and festivals find suitable replacements. That’s part of the business.
I’m sure if it was a perfect world where every artist Coachella asked to headline agreed to do so and for a reasonable cost, then ya they’d only book artists with lots of albums. But that’s not reality.

If you don't think what Coachella is looking for in a headliner booked months to years in advance is different than what they're looking for in a mad scramble to be able to release a poster at all, then we're just on different pages with our assumptions.
A last minute headliner is still a headliner. They book a headliner that's not only available, but meets the criteria they are looking for. 2 albums, 3 albums, reunion, whatever Paul and the team deems right.
Yeah, we wouldn’t want someone like Frank Ocean headlining with only two albums.
Frank is theoretically releasing a new album whenever he plays, is he not? That would make three.
The only times Coachella's booked an artist with fewer than three albums to headline were Stone Roses (a reunion) and last minute replacements. I think they're generally really interested in having headliners who've established themselves for the long run and that are not a flash in the pan. That said, artists explode so quickly these days that it might be tough to maintain that.
Technically SHM just released a proper debut album 5 days ago. Covid really messed up with the ascension of some acts. Fair to say that Doja Cat in 2020 wouldnt be a shock to be a sub in 2022. Then shegot to headline down the line. Now its headline or nothing for her. Lizzo is in a tricky spot, she blew up and then had a ton of momentum then stalled out cause of covid. Sure, she got a couple headline slots but that big buzz is kinda gone. If things were totally fine then Olivia Rodrigo wouldve likely been on the poster in 2021 and played a good slot to a big ass crowd. there wouldnt have been any need to rush with her and and the fest could ensure she was on the right trajectory instead of having to see what other fests do with her booking wise whenever she hits the circuit proper. Harry fit the correct criteria for them. Huge draw, first fest, 2 albums and a 3rd coming in a couple weeks with new songs debuted at the festival. If youre 3rd album is coming right around the fest and youre headlining thats a pass. Billie has 3 albums worth of material, though. The EP is 8 songs.

I don't think Coachella, or really any festival for that matter, can book artists years in advance now. Unless it's some huge reunion which aren't many around nowadays. The rise to stardom is too damn fast. Imagine if they secured Lizzo when she was rising 2 years ago? It would have been a potential huge miss with the likes of Doja Cat and Megan taking over. They probably did the same thing with SHM years ago for 2022 to pair it with the reunion tour but look how that turned out. I hate to say this, but Tik Tok really changed the landscape in the popularity and consumption of music.

Yeah, I agree with all that. They can still book some headliners well in advance (those who are established already and they don't need to worry about their star falling or anything like that) but they would be wise to save at least 1-2 headliners based on what's happening that year.
But they seem (wisely) more interested in catching those rapid-rise stars just before they fully blow up than once they've already exploded, and that will continue regardless.

especially because this lets them bring back the people who stick around and cement themselves as headliner-level and pass on bringing back the people who don’t. Imagine if they tried to book Chainsmokers any later than they did
I think they can book certain headliners well in advance still. The ones who take a while in between albums and such. So an Adele, Radiohead or a Kendrick. If theyre going for rarified air they def have to plan well ahead and sort out their show. IF Rihanna ever did it she would want all the time in the world to make it right I Imagine. Beyonce is supposed to be active next year for example and theres stuff already being booked cause you have to. If they can somehow nab BTS when they return after the members to go the military thats going to have to be the most top secret shit on the planet. Cause if one person gets that kind of news before even the advance sale happens, we're all screwed. I mean they kept Desert Trip pretty tight lipped til a month before announce. Thats pretty good, considering who they had.
There won’t be another “Returning to the Desert” act next year. That was ego stroking only for SMH.
Probably true, but its fun to mess around with the concept for the sake of predicting some of those fringe headliner acts that could make billing a little easier.
having only men in 6/7 top names in the year 2023 minus the xx would be a really bad look
I mean, while it's hard to know when subs were signed on and if SHM would have been the poster after all, the best educated guess for their target for the fest a few months before the lineup dropped was:
RATM - Lil Baby
Travis Scott - Flume
Frank Ocean - Doja Cat
The year before that, it was RATM/CAlvin/Flume/Travis/Frank/Lana, and then before that it was *supposed* to be (before Ye dropped out last minute) Ye/Tame/Gambino/Janelle/Solange/Khalid.
So 1-2 women in the top 6ish names is not remotely unprecedented.
They've upped the female representation on the lineup considerably but they don't seem wedded to having it be exactly equal at the highest spots as long as they have enough female second liners.

It was ego stroking just for SHM but then was replicated for other festivals almost immediately including Lolla...I am blanking on the others but I know there was a hip-hop festival that did this, and perhaps a few more. It was a running joke that acts were being "SHM'd" on posters this year.
It's like inventing the "and George Clooney" thing for movies where you have an A-List actor playing a supporting role - not saying it'll be every year but they've had a shitshow of a time dealing with so many agents demanding second line position or they're not playing, and certainly it might have helped with keeping My Chemical Romance in 2020.
I think it will be back in certain cases as need be, and I think other festivals are going to keep on using it.

Yeah, there are tons of acts that it would be good for. (ahem, Chemical Brothers) (I hate myself)

88 Rising got the “returning to the Desert” treatment first on the 2020 poster. I guess it was a smaller font size but still, GV sees this as a tool for highlighting certain acts
Rage - Paramore Taylor - The Chicks Frank - Blackpink
I'd be pretty surprised if Blackpink plays Coachella again. They did get a ton of buzz and hype from it last time, and while their set was successful it's not like they were packing the Sahara. It isn't really their scene (though perhaps as Kpop gets more normalized it might be) so they're not some sort of natural, recurring booking, and the hype a second time around will be much diminished for both them and Coachella. Considering how easy it is for them to move tickets on their own right, the "novelty" or whatever of playing Coachella doesn't seem like it would be at all worth it.

I think with so many of the Kpop acts just going with LN it serves GV something to try and keep the one they had gotten first and highlight them. No other major festival is even booking Kpop. You didnt see LN trying to sprinkle them into their lineups this year cause theyre already on thin ice with how their stuff has been seen as "weak" at the moment. As much as the current crop of kpop acts are selling out arenas, you can put them on a festival lineup so you can get some tickets sale out of it. Its just a matter of billing pretty much.
Tapping into new audiences which they can hopefully keep a percentage to return the following year is part of the plan in the long term. Having a decent amount of Latin and Asian artists caters to the region very well anyway. Grupo Firme and 88Rising had sizeable crowds so something is working. I wonder what the Harry Styles fans who came just for him thought of everything they saw on Friday and whatever else over the weekend if they stayed.
