My guess is Maggie Rogers is being upgraded to the Outdoor or Main and has new music coming.
Yep, 9 times out of ten an artist is dropping a new album before Coachella when they get a boost like that Plus Maggie easily had the best crowd of 2019. Excellent booking imo
Smart: (not counting artists who were on the 2020 line up/were already expected to return) Harry Styles Ye Karol G Grupo Firme Snoh Aalegra
Dumb: Daniel Caesar Flume SHM (just because they were headliners) Still Woozy (mostly because idk why he's billed so high) Billie Eilish* (ok not necessarily dumb, she'll have a massive turnout, she's a great artist. But I personally would have preferred the next album cycle. Felt they could have been more outside the box but I get it she was a replacement)
Missed: Charli XCX FKA Twigs Bruno Mars/Silk Sonic MCR Hatsune Miku (personal choice because I was hyped for the 2020 set)
Missing headliner points even more to the Smile backing out last second IMO
they're waiting for the Chemical Brothers to follow them back on instagram before they unblur their name
Am I going to have to strip down on the fields and march around from stage to stage while you guys scream “Shame…Shame…Shame” over and over again to repent for this?

No shame. If anyone should feel shame it's me for spending a few hours trying to find an online tool to track historical follows and unfollows of instagram accounts so that I could get a better sense of when exactly the Chems followed Coachella and dig deeper on whether it actually means anything. (I was unable to find such a tool.)
Who knows, maybe they'll end up doing a late night do lab set lol
I used to run this thread on the Coachella message board. Figured I redeploy it here!
Smart 1. Doja Cat - meteoric rise for this female artist. Her music is also ubiquitous in La. hear her on the radio, in the clubs, tiktok you name it. I’m expecting largest crowd of the weekend is for her to take
2. Stromae - brilliant performer and names like his on the bill is what makes Coachella still the premier music fest for masses and critics alike
3. Danny Elfman - Hans zimmer was a very successful booking back in 2017(?). This booking is in a similar vein and the formula works.
4. Masego - just love this guys music. I see him as a fast riser on lineups for years to come
5. Ye - love him or hate him, Kanye is one of the biggest names in music and one of the most talented. 2011 set was incredible so excited to see him back. Also, all publicity is good publicity I guess right?
Dumb 1. Daniel Caesar - mentioned before, but not sure why he moved up on the lineup yet his popularity is moving the other direction. Not a bad artist, just don’t like the placement
2. SHM - just make them a sub, quit with this uneccesary ego flattery. Calvin Harris a former headliner, with the largest crowd in Coachella history mind you, was booked as a sub and there was no issue or qualms about it.
3. Flume and disclosure - we would be good with one, but no need for both. It’s a tired retread of the same edm artists. No problem with them as artists but it gets boring when they’re on the lineup almost every other year and this year they’re both on it
5. Anitta and Karol g - too much of the same.
Missed 1. Tears for fears - first album in 17 years and you’re missing this booking? Huge mistake imo
2. Chemical brothers - throw a bone to your fans that have been purchasing tickets for 20 years. Customer retention is less costly than customer acquisition. The last couple years you’ve given us soulwax aphex Twin, jamiroquai, underworld, the knife etc and they’ve all brought solid crowd sizes.
3. 2020 artists like FKA Twigs, RATM, roddy rich, lil nas, Thom yorke to name a few
4. Music for indie lovers - put Stevie nicks subbing for Harry styles. Put put the arctic monkeys, glass animals or Leon bridges in Joji’s spot. Give us something that represents more musical diversity on the top lines but would also sell tickets. Artists I mentioned would yield great crowds imo
5. Would enjoy some more LIB/burning man sort of artists on the lineup. CloZee, tipper, polish ambassador, wild light, mr. bill, griz, max cooper, dimond Saints, Nico jar, coco Rosie, fever Ray, something that would tell the do lab crowd that this year is gonna be fire
"5. Anitta and Karol g - too much of the same." LOL
You dont even know what you're talking about!!!!!! Anitta sings Brazilian funk, MPB, EDM, Pop Punk, She releases songs in Portuguese, English, Italian, French and Spanish... While Karol G only sings Reggaeton in Spanish O.o What's your point? Did you rate this just cuz they're both Latinas?

Envolver just blew up and I'd be surprised if it isn't one of the songs playing everywhere at Coachella. Her album is also dropping next week on Tuesday right before Coachella.
Yeah I’m not a fan of Latin pop music. It’s whack to me so I think it’s dumb. Pretty dumb y’all get outraged over my taste in music. I understand anitta is a star so I’m cool with it but would much rather have any of the 5 “missed” artists I listed over Karol g

Uh, yeah. He's a massive idiot.
Lmao I think you’re the idiot here bruh. You make the assumption that I don’t like those two artists because they’re Latinas? Feel sorry for you.

I’m gonna give MS-13 your address.
they listen to Metallica and Iron Maiden, they won't care

Surprised this thread didn’t get any attention after lineup release so wanted to start it up again for the 2023 lineup now that we’ve had some time to dissect it.
Smart Gorillaz/Bjork/Rosalia - Fantastic subheadliner programming selection that aligns with the headliners chosen, but also throws bones to attendees that have been loyal customers for years. Jai Paul - Didn’t think this festival could still pull stuff like this. Assumed all big reunions/ first time performances like this would be going to Primavera at this point. Chems/Underworld/HOLO - Likely all getting extended sets. Refreshing to see Coachella book truly unique electronic bookings who normally only tour Europe and not rehash the same thing you can see 30 times a year in this country. Angelè - With the high marks from multiple up and coming French acts in years past it’s great to see them continue down this avenue while finding new and exciting acts. She’s a combination between L’Imperatrice and JAIN. Bad Bunny - Hard to argue with booking the biggest artist in the world right now.
Dumb BLACKPINK - It sounds like they weren’t supposed to be the true headliner of the day, but they’re an artist that I wouldn’t expect to see as a headliner at this point. Hope they prove me wrong and that they belong there, but I wasn’t impressed at all by what I saw live in 2019. $ucideboy$ - Had to be someone better that represented this genre available. Stick Figure - Nothing wrong with the band per say, but rather see international acts that take on similar vibes take up these spots. They’re more exciting to watch and play in front of a Coachella crowd. Maceo Plex and multiple other Yuma artists - Stop booking these guys. They’re here every other festival at this point and aren’t gainful notoriety which justifies a return. Porter Robinson - After booking a ton of great live electronic acts you booked a dud of one by grabbing a guy that has no business singing over his tracks live.
Missed Self Esteem - This is a great live show which would have made a fantastic afternoon set that people would have talked about for weeks afterwards. HAAi - A 2023 Yuma booking that actually made sense FKA twigs - Honestly shocked to not see her on the lineup Nova Twins/Special Interest/The Armed - Felt like slam dunk bookings for the Sonora SAULT - I’m sure they tried but odd that after teasing a live performance in November they haven’t showed up on anything so far this year.
Bad Bunny: incredibly diverse headliner booking that will be the first of many festival headlining sets in the years to come
Chemical Brothers: in a year of recession worries and other external factors. booking an act to keep your faithful attendees happy is always a good idea
Blondie: an act that is instantly recognizable by name alone to all age groups and no matter when they book them people will be trying to find a way to fit them in to hear call me and one way or another
boygenius: Phoebe Bridgers is one of the hottest names in music right now, getting her back on the lineup again in this unique form is a win for Coachella
Jai Paul: goes without saying but booking legendary acts like this is why I will continue to buy tickets to this fest blind year after year
Missed:
Porter Robinson: love the guy but he has been everywhere since the pandemic ended, would have much preferred Kx5 or Martin Garrix in this spot
A Boogie: one of the worst live shows I’ve seen and has no business being on the second line let alone one of the highest billed rap acts
Jackson Wang: this was supposed to be a rare act buried in the 3rd line but with his appearance just last year with 88 rising feels like there are other international acts that could have taken this spot
Snail Mail: of all the indie names to include this one feels really boring and uninspired
Dominic Fike: feels like another wasted booking like Rex Orange County in 2020, an artist that the industry is really pushing for but feels outside there place in the spot they are at on the lineup
Missed::
Any big indie name: would have loved in a year that seems to be catered towards the older crowd to see one of The National, Phoenix, YYYs show up on this lineup on the 2nd line
Kx5: a massive name right now that is doing stadiums and would have felt like a much more inspired booking for the Sunday EDM slot
Bartees Strange: feels like a perfect Sonaro act that is everywhere right now and coming off a album that was included in lots of year end lists
Skrillex: say what you will but the man is about to return after many years off and would have been a massive booking for Coachella to get his first show back
Goose: if not now then when Coachella?! If we are booking acts like Stick Figure and Rebelution throw a bone to us jam heads!
Smart: -Björk/Gorillaz/Calvin Harris/Rosalía not to mirror gibsonguy20 but the subs this year are all fantastic. Getting 3 former headliners really sets this festival apart as far as the size of acts booked and adds to the value of the festival
-Chemical Brothers is long overdue and is bound to get quite a few older coachella vets out of retirement along with some of the other older and rare elecronic acts booked this year
-Glorilla, Latto and Flo Milli are all blowing up as we speak and it feels like they went out of their way to shine a spotlight on women in rap
-boygenius, this trio has absolutely exploded in popularity since they first came out with an EP and it blows my mind that theyre in the same slot Phoebe was last year. No doubt going to be a packed set with a sold out tour following this
-Frank Ocean, I mean, this guy never tours. he’s a critical darling and is rumored to have a new album. if he actually shows up this will be the best booking of the fest.
hm to Bad Bunny, Blackpink, Burna Boy and MUNA
Dumb: -A Boogie being the 2nd highest billed rapper is just dumb. it clearly shows how badly rolling loud fucked them over on booking this year but it just feels like a wasted slot.
-Dominic Fike is a flash in the pan and a waste of a second line act. he is not good live and it feels like he’s coasting on Euphoria fame to get that slot
-Two Friends is super cheesy, i dont see this set being popular with the audience they set out to attract
-$uicideboy$ is out of place and i don’t think theyre popular enough to warrant a second line booking here
-Stick Figure/Rebelution, no one asked for either of these and having them as the only artists of that genre on the lineup is a bizarre choice
Missed: -Olivia Rodrigo felt like a lock, especially if she has a new album coming, idk if negotiations fell through but this is a huge miss that would have gave the lineup a bit more mainstream appeal
-Lil Nas X, how could they miss him?? unless livenation threw a huge bag at him for exclusivity its just bizarre they whiffed on him. He also would have added mainstream appeal to the lineup and a well needed higher billed hip hop act
-FKA twigs, she would have fit in so well on Franks day. Especially stings w her playing Primavera BCN but not here
-Playboi Carti, I know rolling loud grabbed him but he’s one of the biggest Non HL rappers at the moment. would have been smart to grab him while he still could potentially sub
-Pavement. come on, you book this lineup as a love letter to older fans and you whiff on a second Pavement reunion? they even had a song get big on tik tok! smh
Acts i’m glad they missed, no explanation: -Justin Bieber -Skrillex -Jack Harlow -ODESZA -Blink 182

Smart
1. Bad Bunny - I think this one kinda goes without saying. Not often do you find a headliner who was the hottest act last year AND expands representation outside of Western music.
2. Björk/Gorillaz - I’m so happy Coachella has gotten more creative with billing to allow artists not quite big enough to headline Coachella as subs. I think this really opens the doors for more prestigious artists in the future who normally wouldn’t play without special billing like this.
3. Diljit Dosanjh - I’ll admit I didn’t know who this was but I’m glad an artist like this is billed high here. The Punjabi industry is massive but hasn’t really been able to break into the US market yet so hopefully this is an opportunity to help make this happen.
4. Uncle Waffles - Amapiano is another scene that has a lot of great artists within it and it’s great to see some representation here.
5. Dinner Party - Robert Glasper was long overdue and I’m hyped to see him play with Terrace Martin and Kamari Washington. Fingers crossed they explore jazz a bit more with artists like Immanuel Wilkins or Binker & Moses.
Dumb
1. Rae Sremmurd - These guys peaked years ago, don’t really see why they’re here. There must’ve been more relevant hip-hop artists to take this spot.
2. Chromeo - I love Chromeo but sort of the same reason as above. They put on a good party but c’mon, they’ve played Coachella several times already, let’s get something newer here.
3. Jai Wolf - There’s been some holdovers from 2020 showing up here but seems like Jai Wolf has really lost some steam since then.
4. Malaa - Same as above again, kinda an afterthought nowadays.
5. Maceo Plex - Same thing again, not as hot as he used to be. Big fan but there are other names that are hotter than could’ve been here.
Missed
1. Cigarettes After Sex - A rock band that’s pretty popular with Gen Z, would’ve made a lot of sense here and honestly overdue.
2. Lil Durk - How is there absolutely no drill on this lineup? It’s one of the hottest genres right now and the complete lack of it is kinda baffling. Dirk’s absence from Rolling Loud makes this even more of a head-scratcher.
3. The Smile - Weird to see a Thom Yorke project NOT be present at Coachella. If not this year then I feel like it will never be, very strange.
4. Fuerza Regida - One of the hottest modern bandas right now, seemed like a logical choice after Grupo Firme.
5. PinkPantheress - NIA ARCHIVES is here but puzzling to not see one of the jungle/DNB revivals biggest stars on the lineup after being absent from last year’s lineup.
