I used to run this thread on the Coachella message board. Figured I redeploy it here!
Smart 1. Doja Cat - meteoric rise for this female artist. Her music is also ubiquitous in La. hear her on the radio, in the clubs, tiktok you name it. I’m expecting largest crowd of the weekend is for her to take
2. Stromae - brilliant performer and names like his on the bill is what makes Coachella still the premier music fest for masses and critics alike
3. Danny Elfman - Hans zimmer was a very successful booking back in 2017(?). This booking is in a similar vein and the formula works.
4. Masego - just love this guys music. I see him as a fast riser on lineups for years to come
5. Ye - love him or hate him, Kanye is one of the biggest names in music and one of the most talented. 2011 set was incredible so excited to see him back. Also, all publicity is good publicity I guess right?
Dumb 1. Daniel Caesar - mentioned before, but not sure why he moved up on the lineup yet his popularity is moving the other direction. Not a bad artist, just don’t like the placement
2. SHM - just make them a sub, quit with this uneccesary ego flattery. Calvin Harris a former headliner, with the largest crowd in Coachella history mind you, was booked as a sub and there was no issue or qualms about it.
3. Flume and disclosure - we would be good with one, but no need for both. It’s a tired retread of the same edm artists. No problem with them as artists but it gets boring when they’re on the lineup almost every other year and this year they’re both on it
5. Anitta and Karol g - too much of the same.
Missed 1. Tears for fears - first album in 17 years and you’re missing this booking? Huge mistake imo
2. Chemical brothers - throw a bone to your fans that have been purchasing tickets for 20 years. Customer retention is less costly than customer acquisition. The last couple years you’ve given us soulwax aphex Twin, jamiroquai, underworld, the knife etc and they’ve all brought solid crowd sizes.
3. 2020 artists like FKA Twigs, RATM, roddy rich, lil nas, Thom yorke to name a few
4. Music for indie lovers - put Stevie nicks subbing for Harry styles. Put put the arctic monkeys, glass animals or Leon bridges in Joji’s spot. Give us something that represents more musical diversity on the top lines but would also sell tickets. Artists I mentioned would yield great crowds imo
5. Would enjoy some more LIB/burning man sort of artists on the lineup. CloZee, tipper, polish ambassador, wild light, mr. bill, griz, max cooper, dimond Saints, Nico jar, coco Rosie, fever Ray, something that would tell the do lab crowd that this year is gonna be fire
getting mad at not getting Glass Animals is really funny to me
You mad? Cuz I’m not mad. Can’t stand glass animals hit song, but I do like their earlier discography. Just saying there are “indie” artists that would still draw a crowd, yet GV completely abandoned that demo

What is “indie” about Glass Animals and Leon Bridges that isn’t about… idk Joji and Ari Lennox? It sounds like your complaint is they’re booking too many new acts instead of the acts that have been playing every festival the past 5 years

Smart 1. Harry Styles 2. Stromae 3. Fred Again 4.Rina Sawayama 5.Blessed Madonna + Honey Dijon
Dumb 1. Louis the Child - The new Dillon Francis 2. Spiritualized - I’ll likely be at the show, but they just don’t make sense at this point. I don’t like seeing poorly attended shows even if I like the artist. 3. Flume - He’s boring live, and a repeat booking 4. Still Woozy - Had to be a better indie booking available 5. Maggie Rogers - Nothing against her, but with no new music trying to understand this rebooking from 2019.
Missed 1. Bicep 2. FKA twigs 3. Jessie Ware 4. Illuminati hotties 5. Magdalena Bay
They havent announced the Do Lab line up so why would the Do Lab crowd be disappointed? I mean they had sold like 99% of their tickets in advance this time so what incentive do they have to ''sell tickets'' when there wasnt much to put out there on friday. Also not putting into account that some artists just say no? You pretty much want to peg Glass Animals as the new Portugal The Man because they have a top 5 single on the charts but an entire discog that never got that much attention so theyre cool enough to still be inside but they just got popular on the radio cause of tik tok. Were you mad they booked J Balvin and Bad Bunny in the same year? Too much of the same with the boys or the girls moreso? Or is it that they have almost 20 artists from latin america and you feel that catering to the region the festival takes place in is some sort of crime?

No j balvin and bad bunny were booked next to artists like gesaffelstein, aphex twin, and weezer, none of which have any resemblance to the artists on the second line this year. In 2020, we also had RATM and Thom Yorke on those top lines and there isn’t a legit replacement of them from similar artists
Regarding Chemical Brothers being needed for customer retention and Flume and Disclosure being unnecessary bookings, if those customers are the ones who would only return to Coachella if they booked a top billing of Pavement, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Massive Attack, Portishead, and Orbital, they're not coming for just one name anyways and might not even go with those top names as long as Harry Styles and Billie were headlining anyway.
Flume and Disclosure *are* the customer retention bookings. Bands that made their highly regarded Coachella debut sets 8-9 years ago and the 22 year olds that were at those sets are now 30.
The Chemical Brothers would be amazing at the polo fields again, obviously, no disputing that, but that name alone wouldn't move the needle for the 2003-2012 crowd without 10 other huge names from that era.
It's like I was on the forums in 2014 and despite booking "bucket list" acts like The Replacements, OutKast, The Knife, Bryan Ferry, Neutral Milk Hotel, Beck, and Pet Shop Boys that diehards had been begging for for years, a bunch of people jumped ship that year because they just couldn't be seen going to a festival that also had Zedd, Ellie Goulding, and Foster the People on the top lines.
The lineup is really not to my tastes anymore, I've aged out, but I at least get why Coachella is booking new acts and also have sadly realized that the Disclosures of the lienup are the "diehard concession acts" now LOL.

Fair but I felt like 2019 was a lineup for me. How can I age out on 3 years tome so drastically?

Smart: Harry Styles: one of the biggest artists on the planet as a last-minute replacement and one of the first festivals to book him here. Grupo Firme: one of the biggest, modern Hispanic groups right now. These guys sell out arenas like no one's business. Giveon: incredibly fast rising R&B. His tour went nuts in tiny venues, and his Lollapalooza crowd was massive. Joji: a bit overbilled, but another rising artist making waves. Jamie xx: even better if he releases his new album around this time.
Dumb: Swedish House Mafia: who cares? Daniel Caesar: more so because he's billed so damn high, but seems like an easy one to punt in favor of someone else on the top line. Bedouin: incredibly generic name for the Yuma. Damian Lazarus: another strangely dated, tired Yuma act and a boring holdover from the 2020 lineup. Lost Kings: super generic EDM destined to fill an early Sahara slot that could've been wisely spent elsewhere.
Missed: DRAMA: rising pop/electronic duo I'm honestly surprised aren't here given they didn't have an LA date on their tour. The Chemical Brothers: I guess this is never happening. India Jordan: maybe her tour dates don't like up, but she's playing Okeechobee the month before and is among names like Logic1000 as defining house/techno for 2021. Bicep: seems like their dates didn't line up, but was so close it hurts. Would've been an excellent late night tent show. Olivia Rodrigo: likely would've been a sub or a third, but also would've been akin to booking Billie in 2019.
smart: Doja Cat Brockhampton, final shows aspect of it Fred Again.. Grupo Firme and Banda MS - distinguishes the festival and makes it much more unique than its contemporaries Harry Styles is a brilliant headliner booking, theres already a ton of buzz being generated over “harrychella”
dumb Joji 3rd on his day specifically makes zero sense. maybe i’m living under a rock, but im not sure what he’s done since last playing to warrant such a high billing Lil Baby as a sub Ye, i’ll absolutely be at his set, but he is extremely unpredictable and could result in bad publicity for the festival 21 Savage no shows quite often, completely missed his sub set at gov ball Big Sean - especially considering the higher billing than 2020 and the fact that hes committed sexual assault
missed Injury Reserve FKA Twigs Olivia Rodrigo K Pop act like BIGBANG or Dreamcatcher, would have generated a ton of buzz Lil Nas X
Last Edit: Jan 17, 2022 20:21:07 GMT -5 by Deleted - Back to Top
-Stromae -Turnstile -Japanese Breakfast (how is she billed that low?) -Caroline Polachek -Code Orange
5 Dumb:
-Daniel Caesar (that high, really?) -Maggie Rogers (odd pick for the only other second line indie rock set other than Phoebe) -Louis the Child -Flume (seems like he doesn't have the type of buzz they're looking for in a sub, and should have let Megan do it instead) -Emo Nite (screw booking Emo Nite without booking any real 5th Wave Emo band and not having MCR as a headliner)
5 Missed:
-RATM / FKA Twigs / Thom Yorke project (maybe the best headliner booking and two best second line bookings gone) -Bartees Strange (seems like things were lining up for him to play) -Sleep / Deafheaven (seems like the lineup is missing one heavy band to play opposite a pop headliner, and they had two booked for TANP) -Olivia Rodrigo (maybe she just wasn't ready for the big stage yet, but thought GV would try to snag her ASAP so she can more easily headline around 2024-2025) -Paramore (first show back would have been great in the Weezer spot) -Pavement (one more for good measure; they aren't at Primavera LA so are probably a SoCal festival free agent right now and even though 80 people would have been at their set, it would have been at least somewhat symbolic they still cared about reunion shows and indie rock)
Wow, I just assumed they misspelled the singer-songwriter Bedouine on the poster, who is lovely and at the top of her game right now. But apparently it's a DJ.

Smart: 1. Spiritualized 2. Yola 3. J.I.D 4. Japanese Breakfast 5. Bishop Briggs
Dumb: 1. Harry Styles 2. Flume 3. Megan thee Stallion 4. Daniel Caesar 5. Disclosure
Missed: I'll hold off until other lineups are released since there's really no way to know what was available and "missed." The War on Drugs would have been nice. I'm guessing Lana was not available or they would have got her since she was on last year's lineup. Mt. Westmore would have been a cool act to get who probably won't be around in the future.

Would love to hear your argument for Harry Styles being a dumb booking.

Other than his music being trash? I mean, these are subjective lists, no? I get he was a last minute replacement and I'm sure he'll have a big crowd. Doesn't mean it was a good booking imo.
