As I was covering with Abra how she needs to dick punch Phyre Fest this weekend, I was also covering how she needs to make out with 3post1jack1 a little since I can't. Her response was to note how postjack's schedule is full of acts she figures I would see if I went to the festival. Well done, sir.

Yea he was delayed starting for about 15min due to the lightning in the area, so he literally stood side stage (about 10ft from me /brag) and did a standup comedy set while drinking Corona's, lol. Even kept burping into the mic. Was pretty funny if you're a Joel fan but I'm sure some were put off. Then once he got started about 30min into his set his equipment bugged out. I didnt want to get rained on again while trying to head back to Canada so I left at that point, but I heard he got going again and they even let him play late until about 12:15. From what I caught of the set though it was REALLY good. I wish all that shit wouldnt have happened and I could have seen a FULL set. He even said on Twitter that it was bullshit and he was going to record the full set he had planned and post it online.
And funny story about that Audion/Matthew Dear photo, yesterday that fucker slapped it onto a tshirt that said "NOT TIESTO" and started selling it on SnapTee's. I of course had to call him out on Instagram so he took it down.

I didn't get a chance to see many full sets due to bouncing around shooting the whole time, but my favorites in no particular order were:
TESTPILOT Adam Beyer Factory Floor Leon Vynehall Ben Sims b2b Truncate Headless Horseman Pan-Pot Honey Dijon Josh Wink (the Radiohead remix he opened with was amazing)

Where were you standing for Dixon? It's possible I have more photos of you. I was standing on stage shooting for the first half of his set.
I was either towards the back or in the VIP area, you probably didn't get a shot of me. Your Dixon shots looked great btw.
Full festival impressions:
Sound:
The most important part of any festival. I think Movement generally did a great job with sound, with a few hiccups. On day one the Pyramid stage had some volume and mixing issues, Ben Klock in particular was too quiet and the mix was weird. But those issues were remedied by the end of the day. The main stage is super loud, and you can hear it clear as day even way back behind the fountain. Sound was great at the RBMA and Stargate stages. But as a result of what I thought was poor sound at that stage I didn't catch Pan Pot. I actually walked up for the last five minutes and was like goddamnit it sounds great here now.
Now the Underground stage was an odd beast. First, it was incredibly loud. Really really really loud. No complaints about that, but earplugs were required. The bass was also incredibly intense. It was weird, I could be standing somewhere and the bass completely enveloped you and you couldn’t hear any other frequencies, then take one step over and it sounded fine. The key was finding a good position, putting in your earplugs, and staying there. A lot of the harder sounds were happening down there, so the loud and abrasive sound signature worked for me.
VIP:
The VIP amenities were nice, but I don’t think it’s required to enjoy the festival. Having said that, VIP is not that much more expensive than a regular ticket. The VIP area is enormous, with lots of places to lounge and get a little respite from the madness. One nice perk was the main stage had speakers firing behind it into the VIP area, so you could listen to the main stage from the VIP area (but you can’t see the stage). The VIP bathrooms were the air conditioned trailers you see at the Roo VIP area. Those are nice but I have no use for them, I took most of my pisses in the Underground bathroom, which was a muddy wet bassy nightmare, it was perfect.
The VIP viewing areas at the Pyramid and Main stage were kind of worthless, meaning if you weren’t in the first couple of rows of the section you couldn’t see anything so you were better off on the floor. I never found the RBMA VIP viewing area. Having said that I got one of those good spots in the VIP area for Chris Leibing and it was glorious. But I never really had a hard time getting a spot with good sound at any of the stages, except for the main stage headliners which could get pretty packed.
Priority entry for VIP is nice, but I got to the festival early every day and never saw a line for GA entry. Which raises another point about crowds, in that the festival really doesn’t start to get crowded until 6pm or so, for that first 4 hours of the festival the crowd is pretty thin.
The VIP pop-up shows were Griz/Golf Clap on Sunday and Mija/J. Phlip on Monday. I didn’t catch either of them, I like J. Phlip but I’d just seen her the previous night at the Dirtybird show.
Other logistics:
They’ve been doing this for 16 years and they know what the are doing. No serious chokepoints, super easy to get between stages, five minutes tops is the furthest walk. Waits didn’t look too long at any of the bathrooms. Food lines formed around dinner time, but generally food was pretty easy to get and pretty good. Food trucks etc. They did do this weird thing on Sunday where they used barricades to block off the front of all the stages until the headliners, I guess they did this to prevent people from camping for headliners? Maybe people were getting crushed on Saturday, I don’t know, I don’t camp for anybody. There were a shitload of people at the festival but the only times I felt crowded were when it started raining and everybody would pile into the Underground.
Also, I know this is the case with any electronic festival, but I loved there was little to no breaks between artists.
I did a lot of bouncing around between stages, but here is a general map of the artists I caught the most of:
Sat: Altstadt Echo > Matrixxman > Rrose > Headless Horseman > Adam X & Perc > Function. So every artist on the underground stage, occasionally bouncing out to catch bits of other artists. But I caught the majority of the sets of all the above artists. Then Richie Hawtin to close the day.
Sun: Anthony Jiminez > Orphx > Audion > Joseph Capriati / Sleeparchive > Adam Beyer / Paranoid London / Dixon
Note: On Sunday at around 10:30 they closed the stages due to inclement weather. I incorrectly read the writing on the wall and bounced after I’d caught about 90 minutes of Dixon’s three hour set. I thought for sure the fest was done for the day, but they reopened the stages a half hour later, by then I was already at the Dirtybird after. Wish I’d stuck around for the rest of Dixon’s set.
Mon: Project 313 > Teklife (just a bit, wasn’t for me) > Kate Simko > DJ Hyperactive (a bit) > Mind Against (just the beginning) > Rebekah Hybrid Set > Drumcell > Ben Sims b2b Truncate
Favorite sets were Matrixxman, Adam X & Perc, Function, Orphx, Joseph Capriati, Sleeparchive, Dixon, Rebekah, Ben Sims b2b Truncate, Chris Liebing.
What I found out about myself is I like techno live way more than house. I do still like house music (Kate Simko in particular was great), but I was definitely drawn to techno.
Where I blew it was the afterparties. Friday I saw Dave Chappelle, which was amazing and definitely not a mistake, but I intended to go to The Works afterwards but fell asleep because I’d gotten up at 6am that morning and travelled all day. Saturday I had tickets for the Hawtin after but my back was fucking killing me, I couldn’t stand anymore. Sunday I made sure to do back stretches every 30-60 minutes at the festival which worked out great, and that night I did make it to the Dirtybird after. The Dirtybird after was fun, I only made it until about 2:30, but I found I really wasn’t in the mood for that kind of housey post-EDM after a day at the RA staged getting my body blasted with brutal industrial techno. No disrespect, Dirtybird can throw a party, I just wasn’t feeling it. And Monday I was wiped so I again just crashed. Also if it was 15 years ago all those Dirtybird kids would be Bisco kids, the whole vibe felt very jambandy so I felt right at home in that crowd.
Anywho mistakes were made, but I had an amazing time. I will absolutely buy tickets and book travel for next year as soon as I can.

Pretty sure it was Everything in it's Right Place. He was mixing it in and out and I was photographing at the time so I just remember thinking "Oh damn thats Radiohead" but didnt focus on it.

BTW the barricades in front of all the stages on Sunday was because a storm cell was expected and they wanted to be able to continue the music while keeping the crowd safe from any falling stages. They removed them once the storm passed.

That's how you run a festival.
3post1jack1 great review, definitely looks like an amazing time. Movement is definitely on my shortlist of festivals next year.
I should also add the crowd was generally great. I didn't see a ton of plur kids, in fact most people were wearing black or other drab clothing. Very diverse crowd, probably the least white college kid dominated crowd I've seen, plenty of black people, asians, peoples of middle eastern backgrounds, transgenders, gay folks, etc. Should this matter to me at a music festival? I don't know, but I liked it. I'm always more comfortable in a diverse crowd.
Also a surprising amount of senior citizens. I mean, not a ton, but I saw grey haired folks getting down on the dance floor. Also I saw Grandma Techno drop her wallet and I picked it up for her! That was exciting.
No crowd is perfect, I encountered some chompers (this is my favorite term for showtalkers) at some sets, but generally people were respectful of those around them and of the music.

The crowd is probably my favorite thing about Movement. It's so diverse, and there are close to NO raging bro's (though I've seen a handful sprinkled around in the past). Even the plur/raver kids have an old school vibe and are very polite and chill and typically just do their own thing. For the most part, no one really cares about cramming in at the front of the stages, they just want room to dance.
After the pictures are Soundcloud links to the sets from Alstadt Echo, Function, Ryan Elliot, Sterac, DJ Hyperactive, Rebekah, and Ben Sims b2b Truncate.
Function, Rebekah, and Ben Sims b2b Truncate were some of my favorite sets of the weekend.

Pretty sure it was Everything in it's Right Place. He was mixing it in and out and I was photographing at the time so I just remember thinking "Oh damn thats Radiohead" but didnt focus on it.
It's probably Everything is Out of Place by Tengo or Everything In It's Right Place remix by Andy Muller. Although I heard Nic Fanciulli played a remix of it, different to the two aforementioned ones at Lightning in a Bottle that weekend. Also saw Kolsch play a Videotape remix when I saw him. Love the trend of DJs playing Radiohead remixes.

3post1jack1 We went to the Dirtybird after party too. We got there pretty early because I love that entire lineup, and in the middle of my bassnectar flash backs, I noticed people running up to the rail. Interesting. I wasn't a fan, as much as I had been their after party a couple years ago. J. Phlip's set was the highlight of my night. Overall, the day/after parties were my favorites.

The sound at the Fillmore was also surprisingly not that great. The bass lacked visceral impact. I think my senses were probably numbed after spending most of the day at the Underground stage. J. Phlip was great though, I'm definitely a fan.
official recap video. pretty dope. ready for next year.

Just took a survey from Movement regarding date preference. They are considering changing from a Saturday - Monday format to a Friday - Sunday format.
It doesn't make a big difference to me, but I voted keep it Saturday - Monday. The way I see it travelling home on Tuesday should be easier/less busy than travelling home on Monday.
The Saturday - Monday format definitely helps with flights since flights tend to be more expensive on Memorial Day.
that was my thought. plus you at least have the option of flying in on Saturday morning, which could be cheaper than flying in on Friday. While the Saturday > Monday setup is unusual, I think it offers more flexibility for taking vacation days from work and travel.
AM/FM 124 is the first hour of Chris Liebing's set at Movement 2017. Looking forward to reliving this, it was one of my happiest moments of the weekend.
