Just checked my flight itinerary to Detroit for Movement next weekend and I did something I've NEVER done before. I purchased my flight for the DAY BEFORE I needed to be there! So if anyone wants to kick it on THURSDAY when I arrive let me know. I'm so used to festivals being Fri - Sun and booking flights appropriately and it always throws me off that Movement is Saturday - Monday.
King Tuff is playing El Club, if that’s your thing
Yea I saw that. Never had gotten into them, and tried again when I saw they were playing in Detroit and still couldnt get into it.

RBMA is doing Detroit Week in their IG feed. Highlighting a bunch of famous Detroit artists and record shops for those in town (probably a bad weekend to try to buy records tbh)
I dont see a change with RBMA stage? Looks the same as it always has.
And pyramid stage is a cluster any way you turn it as long as its in that corner. There's just not enough sq ft for the crowd it pulls, and its a major pain in the ass to get equipment and staff backstage. If I had to take a guess, they turned it due to sound complaints across the river in Windsor or down river.
I haven't been down to the fest yet, but it looks like they are facing the pyramid stage away from Windsor and the Redbull stage toward it? Also, the tiny stage that was directly to the left is gone and looks like that's opened up to vendors more, perhaps putting the sound experiment equipment there instead of underground? I'll be interested in seeing it, later today, and how it works out.

Yeah the made in Detroit stage is gone. And I think phi is correct on RBMA, looking at actual photos I don't think it's angled differently from the PY. The map is misleading. Pyramid is definitely facing away from Canada this year.

Good day one. Eris Drew was my favorite set, followed by Carlos Souffront b2b Bill Converse. Helena Hauff was fantastic, but I only caught the start of her set cause I got a case of wandering feet and it was super crowded anyway.
I left Ectomorph, which was good, to catch the start of Von Strokes set. Respect, he brought it.
Went to Tresor AP for two hours, which was fabulous, but I'm tired and need to sleep.

Sunday was wild. Antenes and Aurora Halal dominated the early underground sets. Tried to catch some Avalon Emerson but it was so hot. Caught some of Anthony Parasole then spent an hour in the shade in VIP to recharge.
Went to Steve Bicknell but he was having a hard time taming the sound underground (heavy distortion in the bass). Went to Seth Troxler instead and had a surprisingly good time. Was dancing next to Avalon Emerson at that set and possibly Mike Servito.
Caught the start of Laurent Garnier but my energy level was waning and I wasn't connecting with the cool sound layering thing he was doing. Headed over to Kink which ended up being the best set of the day. Transition from Kink to Kevin Saunderson was dope so I danced for a while at Saunderson.
Caught the last 30 minutes of Phase at the underground which was relentless and incredible. Wrapped up with Nina who was super weird in a good way, very minimal groovy acid.
Back to hotel for a sweet six hours of sleep, woke up at 7:15am and headed to No Way Back. No line when I got there but plenty of people still inside. Bounced back and forth between Derek Plaslaiko and Scott Zacharias for two hours. Zacharias was so weird and funky and then a little scary, Plaslaiko was all out high BPM acid, so good. About an hour at Mike Servito, mostly dancing with the crowd outside in the sunshine. Made it back to the hotel by 10:25am just in time for free breakfast.

What I did better this year:
-My hotel this year was half the distance to the festival as last year. It was nice on Saturday to leave the fest, get something to eat, go cool down in the hotel, than head back in.
-Afterparties. Last year I just did the dirty bird party, this year I did Modern Cathedrals @ Tangent and Blank Code @ The Works on Friday, Tresor @ Tangent on Saturday, and No Way Back @ Tangent Monday morning. Wanted to do The Bunker @ Tangent Monday night but I was totally wiped.
What I did well this year just like last year:
-VIP. Totally worth it for me. Being able to chill and watch an act from behind the mainstage is great, and generally it's nice to have a quiet place to go sit and take a break during the day. Shorter lines to get in are a plus, but since I usually show up early when all the lines are short it's not a big deal. Another nice benefit of VIP is it provides one more path to travel to the festival, since there are gates at the Red Bull stage and Stargate stage.
-Wander around. Don't feel locked into any given set. It takes two minutes to walk to any stage, and I'm very glad I left some shows to catch others.
What I want to do better/different next year:
-Stay at one of the hotels right across the street from the festival. Crowne Plaza or Foundation, since they are nearest to the VIP entrance.
-Hit up an "official" after at the Masonic.
-Hit up an after at the TV Lounge.
-See more Detroit artists. Still haven't seen Stacey Pullen, Carl Craig, etc.
----
I have more fun at Movement than any other festival. I had more fun this year than last year, simply because I pushed myself a little harder but also had a better idea of what I was getting into, since last year was my first year.
I do hope the headliners next year are exciting techno artists, not techhouse and hip-hop. I guess we'll find out in seven months.

RZA on stage w/ Dubfire and Moudaber on Monday night was a sight I never thought I'd see.
Oh and I found out why they got rid of the Made In Detroit Stage and made the Stargate Stage so much smaller. Apparently the city lowered the max weight allowed on top of the Hart Plaza structure due to the age and wear of the concrete.

TV Lounge is also a must, particularly the smartbar/RA event they do every year.
Definitely got the FOMO this year. My GF's sister and her bf went just for a day, but they saw Marcel Dettman, KiNK, Avalon Emerson at the fest and then Danny Daze and Lena Willikens at an after. Despite how the lineup turns out next year, I think it's safe to say the afters will make up for any faults. 7/10 of a chance going next year.

Interesting about the weight limit, thanks for sharing.
So you went to the Masonic Monday after? How was it?

I literally stayed maybe 20 minutes. All the staff went to it, I had one drink and left. Was exhausted.
The crowd was loving it though. There appeared to be a good portion of Wu Tang there, but I wouldnt be able to spot anyone outside of RZA and Method Man.

pushing through afters is tough, particularly after a full day in 90 degree heat at the festival.
Friday afters were easy because I took a nap, but Saturday after the fest I only made it until 1:30am at Tresor. Sunday night I was completely wiped out, no way I could have headed straight from the fest to NWB.

email from Movement:
Movement family!
Another year of musical magic has come and gone. We hope you had an amazing time, discovered new artists, made new friends and returned home feeling inspired by the performances and the beautiful community of people who call Detroit home for this incredible annual adventure. This year's energy was by far one of the best, and we thank all of you for helping to create that with your positivity and devotion to music and Detroit.
Thank you for believing in this year’s programming and helping us keep this festival independent, unique and purely about the music. As the festival landscape continues to evolve, our mission remains the same: to present a well-rounded and global representation of the past, present and future of this beloved music while staying true to the revered inspiration and home of the event. We love being able to shine a spotlight on some of our City’s emerging talent, as well as providing a platform for the hometown heroes that are out on the global circuit year-round.
Detroit is the source of the sound that swept the world three decades ago and helped reshape electronic dance music culture, and it is our mission to keep this legacy alive, year after year. With the help of our partner, the City of Detroit, we look forward to bringing you a quality festival experience for years to come and continuing to kick off your summers right.
Keep an eye out for a special offer for 2019 coming to past supporters. We look forward to seeing you next year!
Do not disconnect,
The Movement Team
Media is reporting attendance was down this year, which subjectively seemed to be the case. It was still packed, but rarely was it completely impossible to get a spot for a set like it often was in 2017 (which was nice). I think the above email is kind of references the lower attendance, but provides assurance that the festival is still happening next year, not that there was any doubt.
Also looks like a blind pre-presale will be happening soon.
Yea lineup was definitely weaker this year then any previous one. I really wish they would just dive head first into an all techno/house lineup rather than branching out to these hiphop/edm artists like WuTang and Diplo.
I'd argue the relatively weaker lineup hurt attendance. Hope they book a lineup as good as 2017 for next year.
Without a doubt. I love the representation of local artists and American DJs in general, but they gotta book those big name international techno artists if they want to keep the attention of their core fanbase. they can do both.
i mean, Nicole Moudaber threw an AP and they couldn't get book her for the fest? She's like the queen of movement.
and while i understand them wanting to tap into the popularity of the whole dirty bird/techhouse thing, that crew throws events all over the US throughout the year. they aren't a strong incentive to spend memorial day in detroit.
