filmfanb sorry you are dealing all that shit right now. keep your head up, you'll get through it.
sounds like you had an amazing time at Movement though. particularly what you said about the crowd is true, generally the crowds are great and respectful. i had zero issues with the crowd, and had a lot of great conversations with strangers. one guy in particular i met during DJ Tennis we had a great conversation over our shared love of chris liebing, new balance sneakers, and patagonia rain jackets. i also met a bunch of folks from the whatsapp group. some old heads, some new heads, all sweet people.
of course it's worth noting there are issues with a crowd at any festival, if you read the movement FB group there are plenty of people bitching about all the standard festival crowd stuff: people stepping on feet, shoving through crowds, "trains" through crowds, not excusing themselves, etc. as far as show talkers are concerned i think they are almost a non-issue because the volume is so high, i saw plenty of people chatting during sets (including myself) but you can't hear anybody unless they are a foot from your ear.
food-wise i did pretty good, when i got into town i had the wings and seasoned fries at Sweetwater Tavern. Not sure if they were the best wings I've ever had as some claim but they were delicious and the vibe in there was chill. did my obligatory trip to lafayette for two coneys and a chili cheese fry. also bought a large detroit-style pizza from Nikki's and got like 3 meals out of that. late night eats are scarce in downtown detroit so you have to preplan, it's good to have a fridge in your room.

Not sure I notice real problems with the crowd. There were one or two that may have over done it with drugs but were looked after straight away by friends or people around them. There was two or three quite big muscle dudes at Pyramid who just stood there looking intimating right up front. If you bumped into them you got a look as if you were in trouble but I only saw them once during Art Department. Chatting during sets I really have no problems with to be honest. I can drown people out easily and as you said, the volume of music is so high, it doesnt make a different.
I forgot about Sweetwater Tavern! Did get to Nikkis and was underwhelmed. Pizza was good but the kebab I had was really average. I didnt eat too much really. We had a large sit down meal Friday at an Italian that was fantastic but that was it a part from grazing on festival food.

Oh fuck me is that who that is with the pink dreads?
They were part of a big group in 313 and I swear every damn time I saw them they were in a big circle dancing hard with massive smiles on everyones faces. I took some good photos of them and even talked to Lana for a bit during the b3b main stage set and sent her some photos I had taken.

Yup Lana Wachowski Like lots of people Matrix was a huge film to me. I have followed everything they have done since despite majority of it not being interesting to me. (V for Vendetta and Cloud Atlas I love )
She was so sweet. My friend in the picture didnt know who she was and when I saw her I kinda of freaked out a bit. As I said, I leave well know people to themselves as they are probably approached all the time. So, my friend went over and point at me and she waved me over with the biggest smile. We briefly chatted but I just wanted to let her be. She took my hand and held in hers, almost like I was meeting the pope. It was a very warm moment that felt very private despite a lot of people. I told her what the Matrix meant to a confused kid in a small village in Ireland who felt alone growing up. She was very gracious and happy to take a pic. So I went back to my friends , taken aback by it all and gave my friend the biggest hug for making that moment happen. I turned around again to the 313 platform and she was GOING IN hard. Late on, like you , I saw her at the 313 platform going crazy to b3b.
Not sure if she actually had many people approaching her but she was some awesome. Also , mad props for going hard to music with the rest of us.
They say you should never meet your heroes but this was an awesome moment. Not sure why, but it felt like a moment that could only happen at that festival.
TV Lounge was awesome. Avalon Emerson was my favorite that night she's so great. It's cool to think about the fact that I wont tickets to her smart bar show a couple years ago and it wasn't crowded at all, and now she's headlining this after show. Also shout out to $4 miller high life thought everyone would be super expensive.
Already posted my thoughts on the first day of the fest.
Sunday I missed the beginning of circle of live and all of volvox, pretty upset. Noncompliant was tight. I saw all of Channel Tres. Dumb that they scheduled him for an hour when he played 30, 35 minutes tops? It was still amazing though. Ran over to circle of live after him and it was actually really fucking fun! The four that were up there were grooving and smiling so hard, and the music they were playing was incredible. Unfortunately it ended a little before 8pm, I was ready to watch them go until 9pm like they were scheduled for. Went to Charlotte De Witte after that. I was not feeling her as much as I thought I would, kind of disappointed. Then we went downstairs early to check out Oscar Mulero. I thought he was fine, nothing great but better than Charlotte. Left him early for the end of Fisher and the Saundersons. The Saundersons were cool, but I really had to use the restroom so I used that opportunity to check out Richie Hawtin. Couldn't really get close to the stage so I just sat and listened from the back of the concrete steps facing the artist in residence area, and he sounded great. Wish I would've saw his whole set. We left early to get to No Way Back. Man, the way they set up that place is pretty fucking gnarly. Pretty sure someone in my group sat in the decompression room for an hour lol. Honestly, Derek Plaslaiko was really fucking weird. Like, my friends left LSD after a couple of minutes because they thought that was too much, but like even I was like what is he playing. He played this crazy trippy remix of Miley Cyrus 7 Things lol, I started laughing because I couldn't believe it. People were cheering when Eris Drew came on because she played this killer song right off the bat, but I was cheering because he was done. Eris was so much better at No Way Back than she was at TV Lounge on Friday. Not that her TV Lounge set was bad at all, but at No Way Back she fucking owned the room. Left a little bit into BMG, a lot of my group was tired and I wasn't trying to stay out by myself lol.
Monday morning I thought I'd feel like shit but thankfully I didn't. Had to miss Shigeto, but made it in time for the advent. They were a fun set, seemed like a lot of people were downstairs for them and Fjaak. Fjaak killed it, one of the best sets of the weekend for me. I saw Audion, and I don't think he was as great as I was hoping he'd be. Should've saw DJ Bone. Floorplan was after that. The first bit of their set was different than what I expected, but after that they brought out a middle aged woman who probably kills it in her local choir at church to sing along to a song and it was everything I wanted from there on. After that we went down and got a great spot for Griz. My friend is a huge Griz fan. He brought out a lot of collaborators who I'm sure your wook at Bonnaroo would know in a heartbeat. I did not know who they were but I enjoyed that he had some pals to support him good for you Griz. My Griz friend didn't enjoy he set though and wanted to go check out Stephan Bodzin. I used that as an opportunity to leave too, and went to Yeaji. Honestly, she might have been the most disappointing set at the festival, I wasn't vibing with what she was playing at all. I checked out the end of Stephan Bodzin, wished I would've saw his whole set. My girlfriend was a dummy and stayed at Griz the entire set even though she didn't like him because she was tired of walking, she was silly. The rain kind of sucked during Griz, but if I was at Bodzin I think I would've been more okay with it? Not sure.
3post1jack1 was so nice when he came down to meet me. I'm not going to lie, I was telling my group I was really nervous about meeting someone from Inforoo, one because my girlfriend ALWAYS teases me when I'm on here, saying stuff like oh talking to your virgin boys again even though she's on reddit like 24/7 (I know she doesn't really think anything bad about this site she just knows it pushes my buttons ). He was so nice, came up and gave me a hug even. I am very drunk in that picture, I look like a goon =/ But I am more open to meeting others at Bonnaroo now! Also I know it's not the best beer, but Bud Light Lime at a festival is much easier to drink than normal domestics please judge away.
As for food, Thursday night on the drive from Chicago we had the lovely McDonald's at my girlfriends urging for the first time in almost a year. It was McDonald's. Friday I met up with my family and had coney dogs and fries, it was my girlfriend's first time. I had so many coney dogs as a kid, love that shit. Dinner was Pegasus in Greektown. Had the roast leg of lamb with green beans and the rice wit the red sauce on top. I had been looking forward to going back to greektown for about year and it was just as amazing as I remember it. Was also my girlfriends and host friends first time having saganaki, they looked like little kids when they lit it on fire and yelled OPA! lol. Saturday afternoon had mexican town like I said, specifically Xochimilco. My cousin was late to lunch so we ordered a large botana between four people, and I think we were all already full by the time they showed up. No regrets though lol. Still ordered lunch because we could use the leftovers as late night food. For dinner I think I just had a chicken on a stick at the fest because I was still full from mexican food, it was aight. Sunday lunch was Sweetwater, my first time having them actually. Got the wings, fries and onions rings because I had a lot of corn before. Worth the hype, very good would recommend. Dinner was a chicken shawarma. First time having it actually, which I'm sure there's better options in Chicago than something I had from a festival, but I liked it! Monday lunch was with another cousin at Jacobys (a German restaurant) right next door to Sweetwater. They have a great beer selection, would recommend for that alone. I had a jager schnitzel with red cabbage, applesauce and potato pancakes. Very good meal, but would probably try something different next time. Dinner that night was splitting BBQ chicken pizza from the wood fired place and also splitting an order of fries with my girlfriend. Very good drunk food. Also got more drunk and ate more corn so I had two pieces of the cheese pizza next to the pyramid stage during Bodzin, also good drunk food! On Tuesday morning before we left we had Green Dot Stables. They specialize in fancy sliders, and they were awesome. Definitely a must visit if you guys go to Movement next year. The fries are also dank too. I ate like fucking shit as you can see, and my body hated me as a result lol.
Random fun facts: -I wore my black madonna t-shirt and a guy tried to pat my belly in light way to get my attention and say woo black madonna! It was a little harder than he thought I'm pretty sure. I was in line to use the restroom and it made me feel like I was gonna piss myself. Nice way to meet another BM fan -My girlfriend wore her BM shirt the day before, and the coolest thing happened while we were at Sterac on the dance floor at the underground stage. This oldish lady (not like techno grandma but maybe 50-60s?) was passing through the crowd with two young girls around 10ish. We had a lot of corn that day, and my girlfriend was in her own little world. This lady smiles and taps my girlfriends shoulder and starts talking. My girlfriend was an idiot and didn't think to take her ear plugs out to listen to her, but she was asking for a picture of her shirt. Eventually my girlfriend caught on and said sure. The two girls got in the picture, and I had no idea why these young girls wanted a picture of my girlfriend like go find your own? The lady came up and thanked my girlfriend for the picture and said a couple of words before walking away. It turns out that Maria (The Black Madonna) is one of the girls godmother, and she was sending that picture to Maria. My girlfriend was pissed that she probably looked like she had a lot of corn lol, but it was cool to experience. -My girlfriend also wore a Discwomen t-shirt on the day that Volvox played. A photographer asked if we caught her set and she just goes nah because we were late, and the photographer looked so disgusted with her and just walked away, probably thinking she was a poser lol. I told her she should've just said we had seen her before at Smart Bar, but she didn't think of that at the time. -I really liked the crowd, even the Griz crowd near the front was respectable and nice. Probably up there for best festival crowds I've attended.

stinky it sounds like you definitely crushed it in the food department. and you caught plenty of great music despite arriving later in the day. i do enjoy catching those earlier in the day acts when it's not as crowded, but in doing so i sacrifice being able to go later at the afters. but i'm 37 years old and it's hard to rearrange my sleep schedule for a weekend.
FYI: in four days the marriott courtyard will be bookable for movement 2020. you can only book friday right now at a rate of $180/night.
Who do y'all want to see for Movement 2020?
Headliner ideas: Nina Kraviz b2b Helena Hauff, Plastikman, Adam Beyer in some capacity. And the usual suspects: Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, etc.
Undercard: Dixon, Black Madonna, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Lotus Eater, Rebekah, I Hate Models, Perc, Jeff Mills, DVS1, Paula Temple.
Not sure if DVS1 plays festivals anymore, heard him talking shit about festival sets in a recent interview.
I think I'll be taking a year off Movement next summer. A lot of my friends want to go to the Indy 500 and it's always the same weekend as movement. Plus my parents still live in Indy and are very nice and offer to be our sober drivers, so that in combination with having a free place to stay is pretty swet. I'll for sure be returning in the future though!

The thumbnail for the after movie on Instagram is one of my shots. Outside of that, I can't take any credit for the incredible after movie. Jeff and his video/editing team absolutely kill it every year.
missed the early early early bird courtyard deal. last year i booked in june at a good price, this year was a similar price but it was "advance purchase" (but cancellable) and i hesitated about putting the money down right now. now the price is back up to a crazy $300+ per night and that isn't happening. wish i would've just booked it.
for my backup i booked a room at the motorcity casino. not close to the hart plaza but it is walkable to TV lounge and a shorter ride to other after venues than the courtyard. still i'm hoping to book something walkable to hart plaza.
Resident Advisor has posted a lot of sets online from this past year, I'll link some later when I get home. I'm excited to listen to the LSD set
yeah they posted them a lot quicker than last year, thats cool.
even though i anticipated being at the underground stage a lot i spent most of my time at the pyramid and stargate stages this year, so i didn't catch many of the full sets they posted. so unfortunate i won't be reliving the experience, but fortunate that i get to hear the sets i missed out on (like LSD and Sterac).
new RA article about skating and club music. Moodymann/Soul Skate content.
I asked Dixon Jr. if the Detroit skaters know he's a house music institution, jetting off to play festivals every weekend. "A few," he said. "It leaks out because you got the internet now. But have I officially come out and agreed to any of that shit? No," he laughed. "Going over there is providing a way for me to do things like this. To give people a concert they didn't even know was coming to them. They might have not seen Rakim. Or, you know, believe it or not, you got people that skate and will skip out on dinner or provide for their children, and I got a full course meal, you know? Try to keep it all night. I got food. Don't leave talkin' about you're hungry, I gotta go and I'm hungry. I got that for you. Don't leave cause you gotta go to a club to see some other thing. I got a concert for you. You ain't gotta go nowhere, it's all tonight baby. Plenty of motherfuckers from all around on the floor."
