My girlfriend’s friend once called the national “sad dad music” and that’s why I’m not voting for this round. Their music makes me think of a dude in his 40s nursing a scotch or IPA and a single tear rolling down his face at the daydream of a life he might’ve lived.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

I mean, or a mom.
I once told bacon that he didn't understand the National bc he was too young and life hadn't disappointed him enough yet.

that was hyperbolic but for real, i think they a very overrated band and seeing them at ACL was honestly pretty painful, especially with them going 15 minutes past their set time just so Matt could crowdsurf
Sufjan is a weird one because his output is probably a perfect 50/50 ratio of sleepy to not sleepy music.
Seven Swans and Carrie & Lowell are honestly his only albums that I'd categorize as more sleepy than not.
Age of Adz 110% is not sleepy and both Illinois & Michigan have very energetic songs counteracting the slower/sleepier ones. Avalanche, overall not sleepy. Nor A Sun Came. Latest output, mostly not sleepy.

It is pretty much all music about being a romantic, drunk fuck up in various relationships, and if you haven't been that person yet, it may not hit you as hard as it does sad moms and dads.

Have definitely fallen asleep to Aporia (and it’s one of my favorite Sufjan albums!), haven’t listened to Planetarium but I also recall that being pretty sleepy?

Oh, for sure Aporia is p sleepy. So that is a recent output of his that falls in the category - but Ascension has a lot of bops.
If Suf is being counted for Planetarium, shouldn't it sorta count for Dessner too? It is a collab.

I went to sasquatch 2018 with a bunch of friends who arent really into the indie music scene and of our eight-person group six of them fell asleep during The National.

I’m voting for Wilco until they’re out. I’ve seen them a dozen times, and none of those shows have been even remotely sleepy.
Once Wilco is out, I’m launching a campaign to get Mumford & Sons out. Sometimes, we accidentally close our bedroom door at night, trapping our cat in the room with us. Inevitably, he’ll decide in the middle of the night that he has to go to the bathroom, and he’ll make these really loud yowling, desperate cat sounds until my wife or I get up and open the door, granting him the freedom to race to his litter box. I imagine this is what it’s like trying to sleep to Mumford & Sons.
i've had to turn off beach house because i could feel myself dozing off as I drove home from work. they are probably the sleepiest on here.
much more boring (sufjan, fleet foxes) or meh on here (mumford, lumineers)
i understand suf is not everyone's cup of tea, by a long shot, but calling him boring is baffling to me
throw this on. tell me if you can still call him boring 23 minutes from pressing play.
I'm just not really into high school musicals written by theater kids who overheard their older siblings talking about PLUR after an epic trip to electric forest.

i am truly baffled that this is how you perceive sufjan. high school musical? have you uhh, internalized any of his lyrics, ever?
