this place is weirdly sympathetic towards rapists, especially if theyre older because “that was the culture!”
i dont really bother bringing it up anymore because the discussion doesnt go anywhere and no one is gonna change their opinions so its not worth it. but it is comforting to see someone else calling it out so thank u for that.
some of us are just less obsessed with being morally superior.
I believe in redemption. I believe in the human spirit. We all got our journeys, right?
But as a community, if we are deplatforming child sexual predators/groomers, it needs to be across the board... Not giving certain people passes.
Listen to whatever tf you want. Turn it up loud. This is not about being morally superior. This is about creating a world where this kind of behavior is not tolerated, no matter who you are. It's about putting love in the world and righting our societal wrongs.
I just think it's funny that we allow spaces in the scene for people like Iggy Pop, but banish others. Why? Because so many years have gone by? Because they are "legends"? There's hypocrisy in that.
Get into it, gurl.

I just think there are levels to these things and focusing more on encouraging helpful behavior like donating to various civil liberty charities (or even distressed individuals), voting for socially progressive politicians, doing work on theirselves to try to address their blind spots in empathy and action (I’m trying to do this - any book recs on topics down the line of feminism or trans rights would be appreciated, I’ve lived in a very straight male filled environment, so I don’t have the frames of reference), etc would do so much more good than just getting on peoples case about adding .001c to JK Rowling or Win Butler’s bottom line by playing a video game or streaming a song.
Also in general, I’m a big believer in reformative justice, and if it’s going to apply to murderers, it applies to abusers too. I can’t say if I think Iggy Pop has reformed, I don’t know the guy. I just think I’m general, it’s possible for there to be people who were scumbags and abusers in the 70s but have become decent people by 2023 (again, not saying Iggy Pop is one of them). If we’re going to forever invalidate peoples existence for mistakes of their past, might as well just give the death penalty for all heinous crimes, no?
I think people also get frustrated at the lack of consistency of these criticisms. If I play Hogwarts Legacy I’m a transphobe, whilst ignoring the fact that the vast majority of all entertainment people consume is in some way leading to money ending up in a scumbag’s pocket. It’s generally impossible to consume truly ethically the way the system is set up. Would you enjoy someone blasting you constantly for wearing Nikes, eating at Chick-Fil-A, and owning an iPhone (or the dozens of other things you unavoidably due that are leading to the exploration of others are making a hundred millionaire a billionaire)?
Or going to Coachella, the festival owned by a notoriously anti-lgbt bankroller?

But if you believe in redemption, what’s it going to take for Iggy Pop to be redeemed? He admitted what he did and acknowledged the harm it caused his victim. He got sober and has been clean for decades, he’s been a mentor and a role model in the scene for as long as most of us have been alive. I haven’t seen anyone actually suggest what he did was okay, because it wasn’t, but what more can he do? His victim died years ago, and I can’t imagine you believe he has to serve jail time in order to be redeemed.
Its a mix of pavement and grass. But given how the stages are laid out and all the cool funky nooks, you don't really notice it. The only time I felt the side effects of the pavement was after the LCD set when I was dancing & jumping like a fool on the pavement with shitty shoes on...

Brubba, I agree with you and your outlook, but everyone that has ever existed is a piece of shit. We don't even know about 99% of what these artists do that isn't public; until it is. I wasn't going to see Iggy anyway, but even before your comment, I never even knew about his history. So we shouldn't judge people for seeing some show. Heck, my favorite artist has killed people (allegedly.) If we only started booking saints, we'd only be left with Julie.

I don't think people are inherently pieces of shiz, but we definitely got the ying and the yang going on. I just think we should hold people accountable across the board... And if that means we as a community have decided to deplatform child predators, then we need to include everyone. Like I said, I believe in redemption... But redemption doesn't mean you get your spot back.
Having sex with a 13 year old and then attempting to profit off of it 20 years later... It's a no go for me, y'all. I'm not talking about every little trespass we as humans commit. I'm talking about a grown man using his position as a rock star or prominent figure to court and penetrate a 13 year old girl... And don't forget the profiting off of it later part. It's A LOT to process.
There is no place for Iggy Pop on the main stage of a festival... Let alone one that takes place amongst my community, in my city. No.
Still think we get Summit again if he’s on this and was at last year’s fest? I know he just moved downtown, but gotta assume he’s gonna do several club shows and this on top of the previous III Points seems like overkill. Already assuming Fisher won’t return again. Would love to see Astra Club at III Points. Caught a bit at Coachella.
Also, anyone tied into Space have anything on the special guest? 👀
Looks like the special guest has now magically shifted to Patrick Topping.
