Like honestly... What is in Baltimore? I have no clue what is in that city. Besides the Orioles and Ravens.
There's a pretty harbor they show on television. Lots of good and diverse musical acts come from there too - Frank Zappa (better known from Laurel Canyon), Animal Collective, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Mama Cass (also best known for Los Angeles), Philip Glass, Turnstile, Beach House, JPEGMAFIA, etc.

I was a little blown away by Vegas when I first visited, it's insane how some of the stuff was just built with like no expense spared. Some of those hotel lobbies are insane. I really enjoyed just walking around and seeing things. But last time I went I was really turned off by how tourist trappy it was, it bothers me to be in a place where I feel literally everyone around me wants money from me.
I haven't done a wild weekend with friends there though, I still want to do that once in my life.
Like honestly... What is in Baltimore? I have no clue what is in that city. Besides the Orioles and Ravens.
Yeah idk what it offers different than any other Northeastern city. Like Phoenix is pretty unique in terms of location and landscape.
Baltimore has the best local arts scene in the northeast (other than New York). MICA is acclaimed and the Visionary Art museum is fantastic and has a built a strong community with regular public events. Cost of living might be best of any city on this list, and the location on the bay provides excellent outdoor opportunities. Food is a little one note with its emphasis on crab and old bay, but there’s a uniqueness to old bay on everything that’s really great and there are many other good options all very affordable. Camden Yards and the Aquarium also big pluses.
Anyway, local art and affordability are huge huge drivers
Edit: also, DC people claim MPP on their great music venues list but it’s technically closer to Baltimore
Also I think people everywhere tend to think their city has the best food in the country. Like I’ve heard multiple people say Chicago is one of the best food cities in the country and it’s like yeah we have some good restaurants but I don’t think I’d go that far.
this is a good point. i'd say it's probably rare for any big city to NOT develop at least a decent food scene. so it all ends up being relative. but if you live someplace you are going to find the good food places.
trying to be objective and looking at it from a variety and quantity perspective, it's hard to top NYC. i've got a couple of NYC trips coming up and researching food places is overwhelming. just the variety of food places within walking distance of my hotel is insane. highly rated places serving haitian, korean, japanese, chinese, greek, malaysian, french, vietnamese, vegan, indian, dominican, spanish, mexican, jamaican, all on the lower east side.
this captures it for me. it's the absurdity of it all. in the morning i go downstairs to get coffee and people are still standing around a craps table drunk off their ass and screaming, then head to Valley of Fire which looks like another planet, during the day i'm walking around all these outrageous casinos amongst people from every walk of life, at night i have an amazing korean meal at a restaurant themed to look like a high school prom, followed by a super weird and hilarious live show filled with a bunch of half naked people running around a spaceship and also there is a small dog in the show. the night ends with me in a room on my balcony looking at the bellagio fountains and the lights on the strip wondering what the hell just happened.
you don't have to love vegas but speaking from a tourist perspective it gives me all the shit i need for a satisfying and memorable vacation.
I think you guys are convincing me actually. I can appreciate a good tourist trap. I guess I just focus on the gambling too much which really isn’t my thing.
I hate gambling, but somehow have been to Vegas twice. I would be fine never going back again, but I can say that I loved both trips.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

re: vegas i'm also not a gambler or a drinker. our first trip out there was a risky bet, but now we've been three times and we're always planning our next trip out there.

I'm also not a gambler, but Vegas is one of my favorite places to visit. I've been seven times now and it never gets old because there's just simply so much to do other than gambling, especially if you like to eat. I don't think I've ever been to the same restaurant twice and I probably never will because I'm always finding new ones to try.
EDIT: Except for MilkBar because CEREAL MILK ICE CREAM.
I’ll end up there at some point I’m sure for a friends trip or something but I really have no interest in ever going to Vegas
Sounds like people have given you valid reasons to visit. Here's another, and it's specifically for college basketball fans (which, I think you are, based on comments last week that I interpreted as watching basketball all last weekend).
Vegas is home to 5 men's conference basketball tournaments during championship week. The WCC (Gonzaga, St Mary's) plays at The Orleans (west of strip across the interstate) early in the week, so get there Tuesday and you could get to that championship game. Then the rest of the week has the Pac XII playing at the fancy arena near Mandalay Bay, the Mountain West Conference playing at UNLV (which I believe is just east of the Hard Rock, off strip), the WAC takes over Orleans arena after WCC leaves, and Big West plays just outside of Vegas in Henderson. Some buddies of mine are in on a trip next March to go watch as many conference tournament basketball games as we can watch in like 4 days.

Baltimore plus:
- crab cakes - Inner Harbor (and generally the natural beauty of the water) - Fells Point (mussels at Berthas, Max's Tap Room, great neighborhood for nightlife) - OK train system, can get you to DC and back - easily accessible airport - Camden Yards is my personal #2 baseball park in America, it's just incredible (but sadly, the city does not sanction tailgating)
I already knew this but this thread highlights even more how much more money you all have.
Major draw of these bigger cities definitely is purchasing power, and a big reason why I'm still in Minneapolis. Being able to find that perfect combination of low expenses and high wages is rare.

it is but it's still significantly lower than other cities.
like my house in DC probably costs twice as much
*Austin also getting hit w the transplants and gentrification much harder
Yah my cousin moved to a suburb of Austin (maybe 20 min away) because no one can afford Austin anymore. And since they bought their house a year ago, the same houses in their development are selling $200,000 more (you read that right) than what their house cost. Same new houses, a year later, due to the cost of materials and high demand.

My wife lived there, not me, so I don't have the full local experience but Shedd Aquarium is pretty great. The whole harbor area actually has a lot going on. They have Wegmans, which is great.

We don’t have kids and we still could never afford to go to all these places.
If it makes you feel better, I have not been to 9 cities on this list. I just have a strong obsession with Las Vegas that I am proud to have completely derailed this thread with.
Houston has a great cost of living, lots of people moving from CA to here because of that
Which means your rent is going up
Funny enough I just renewed at my apartment in inner loop Houston and my rent actually went down for this lease, because they were trying to stay competitive with all the other apartment complexes that have gone up in the area.
This is not a common thing, I got a super good deal, but probably completely unheard of elsewhere

Vegas is like this too. We bought the house we lived in there in 2013 for $150,000. I got a Zillow email today about that house, and the estimate for it is $376,900. It’s a 1400 square foot, 3 bedroom house. In no world should anyone have to pay that much for a house like that, but that’s the world we are apparently in.

that's really interesting since Houston has some of the loosest zoning laws in the u.s. Seemed like a cool city from day4night. That main stretch in downtown had a lot going on and was surprisingly pretty.

yeah whenever i'm near a milkbar the gravity of cereal milk ice cream always pulls me in. personally i think their baked goods are way too sweet though.
i think we've hit Hell's Kitchen every time we've gone. We went the first time just for fun but the food is great. in the middle of the strip and easy to get to so it's easy to arrange a loafing day around a lunch res there.
Beyoncé is from Houston. If you can name a better musician from Phoenix, I’ll change my vote
I'm trying to think of what I know from Phoenix - Jody Foster's Army (JFA) of course, but I wouldn't call them great musicians.
Alright I found a list - Zola Jesus, Stevie Nicks, Soulfly, Sacred Reich, Mr. Mister, Mija, Grapes of Wrath, apparently Chester Bennington.
Definitely some good stuff there, and I think (?) Rob Halford lives there, but he's from the UK obviously.
meat puppets, gin blossoms, and jimmy eat world too. phoenix likes their alt rock. maynard lives and owns a winery a couple hours north.
and roger clyne, who brought this 90's gem, is local hero around there. hosts an annual festival on the "Arizona Coast" (Rocky Point, mexico) that's an annual pilgrimage for many Phoenicians.

that's interesting and makes me happy. i feel like i read something recently about houston being really good about allowing new housing to be built? is that correct?
