I'm curious for an explanation on Houston being a "top 5 food city" and having "an argument for number 1". I'm not really arguing. I think most of these cities probably have a good food scene, and I'd be interested to see how people weighed that. What makes a city a "good food city"? Beard nominees? Michelin stars? Some arbitrary internet rankings?
That comment stuck out to me too. Michelin doesn’t review Houston (or most places), but I looked up what cities had the most James Beard award winners. Not the be all end all metric obviously but interesting
how the fuck does Bessemer have 6 Beard awards, I didn't even think it had 6 restaurants
Edit: realistically though that makes Birmingham have 11 total, since Bessemer is just a suburb. We have 3 more finalists this year, it's a great food city
Good thing there are no oil refineries in the New Orleans area.
They have a couple. One is upriver in Norco and we don't get anything from that. The other is downriver in Meraux on a bend in the river, and you'd have to live over there or in Chalmette to have any effects from it. Houston, Lake Charles (particularly Westlake), Beaumont and Port Arthur are really the only cities I know in LA/SETX that have that refinery/chemical smell from time to time. Obviously it depends on the wind and direction of the wind.

Like honestly... What is in Baltimore? I have no clue what is in that city. Besides the Orioles and Ravens.
Baltimore plus:
- crab cakes - Inner Harbor (and generally the natural beauty of the water) - Fells Point (mussels at Berthas, Max's Tap Room, great neighborhood for nightlife) - OK train system, can get you to DC and back - easily accessible airport - Camden Yards is my personal #2 baseball park in America, it's just incredible (but sadly, the city does not sanction tailgating)
At least we can bring food into the stadium this year. The tailgating thing is odd, tons of tailgating for football but in the same parking lot if the orioles are playing it's a no-no
diversity in culture, other places w good BBQ can't touch us in Asian cuisine, Midwest can't touch us in seafood, most places can't touch us in Mexican food (being up against Phoenix might negate that this round), Bourdain loved it, we've got an awesome chef who's pretty famous and his charity was super huge for restaurant workers during the early pandemic (David Chang donated his Who Wants to be a Millionaire winnings to it)
Sorry Jose Andres is actually from DC
but his restaurants are massively overrated. never been to minibar tho, maybe that one is up to par.

Excellent breweries and bars, a cool arts scene, some very good food spots- especially crab/crabcakes, Asian fusion restaurants, and pit beef-, decent aquarium, a bunch of good museums from Trains to Industry to Babe Ruth, Fort McHenry, a few good parks/hiking trails, a touristy Harbor area which is underwhelming, bad accents, and nothing is ever too far away or long of a drive from one part of the city to another.

I can't tell if you missed Pablo's joke or not...
I must have missed it and still don't get it because I know some people who work in those places. But it's not an issue for the city though tourists trashing downtown and pissing and vomiting everywhere in the French Quarter is probably as bad as oil.

Also if you've never been at a house party in Baltimore, you are missing out on a SCENE.
I hear the same applies to the clubs but I was in Arlington area and had work the next morning so couldn't make bad decisions that night.
Nashville has been near the top of my list to visit for a while, one of the only major US cities left I haven't gone to, but the things I've heard make me hesitant.
I like Phoenix a lot. As long as its not the middle of summer. I was just there last month though and the weather was wonderful and I had a great time
it's pretty contained to a singular part of the city, I only drive past it when I'm leaving the city to go east, and it's not like we have a pollution problem on the same level as LA/SF or Phoenix
(shout out Honolulu for it's low pollution)
San Francisco has good air quality and is low on the pollution index. Better than Houston.
On the flip side and in Baltimr's favor, there is the entire cast of the Divine era John Watters movies.
Edith Massey (aka Edie the Egg Lady)
Divine (as she sentences a police officer to death)
Mink Stole
David Lochery
Mary Vivian Pearce
If you've never seen any of those movies - don't watch them. Going backwards from scratch 'n sniff Polyester, they were Desperate Living, Female Trouble, Pink Flamingos and Mondo Trasho.
EDIT: Except for MilkBar because CEREAL MILK ICE CREAM.
Ok, so most people around here know I have a general distaste for all things sweet and pretty much avoid all desserts, brunch foods, etc. because of it. I was lucky enough to be with my sister when a happy vendor sent a giant box of Milk Bar products. Some big layered cake, a pie, and tons of cake pop things and cookies... Let me tell you. I loved every bite of that pie and the cake pops. I can't remember my feelings on the others. 3post1jack1 is right, though. They are absurdly sweet which makes you think I would especially hate them.. alas..
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
