The non-touristy areas of Honolulu are great. Great and interesting food, decent breweries, great beaches, close to a bunch of nature, amazing weather, a lot of it is pretty walkable. I'm certainly not arguing it should win but the argument that Honolulu sucks because it isn't some resort on Maui is silly.
Its primary industry is convincing people to essentially set their money on fire - read the book Super Casino if you ever want to get a picture of how thoroughly everything in Vegas is designed to get you to gamble until you can't gamble any more, and then maybe just keep gambling and if you spend your life savings, oopsie.
Its contribution to culture pales in comparison to almost every other major American city.
Someone posted pictures of the desert in one of the earlier threads as a way to sell it, but all of that stuff is not actually *in* Las Vegas.
I could go on.
Yea but you can have plenty of fun without gambling.

That was me. I’ll grant you that Valley of Fire is a little bit of a drive outside of Las Vegas. And technically speaking, Red Rock Canyon is also not inside the Las Vegas city limits, but neither is the Strip if we’re being that technical. When we lived in Las Vegas, it was a fifteen minute drive to Red Rock Canyon. It took us twice that long to get to the Strip.
There are also a ton of venues with concerts and comedy. You can go see Penn & Teller or Cirque du Soleil pretty much any time. You can zip line at the Rio or over Fremont. You can visit the Mob Museum, Springs Preserve, the Ethel M Chocolate factory, or (my personal favorite) the Neon Museum.
Also, for all the talk in here that there’s been about weather, Vegas has a lot of these places beat. Yes, it gets hot in the summer but most of the year is mild and pleasant.
I don’t think that Vegas should win this by any means, but I definitely don't think it deserves to go out yet.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Comparing the beach in Hawaii to a beach in the Southeast USA is disgusting 🥴
i agree it's not a fair comparison, tried to make that explicit in my post. i'm sure a hawaii vacation would be streets ahead of a gulf shores vacation. but having lived so close to the beach my whole life, i'm just not as enchanted by any kind vacation with a beach focus, whether that be hawaii or gulf shores or bali.
on the flip side, I am enchanted with destinations with a desert or mountain focus, because it's so foreign and unique to me.

Honolulu can also be your gateway to the mountains of Hawaii.
Kind of funny there’s a big Hawaii vs. Minnesota debate happening right now while Las Vegas is the one that’s in the lead now.
unfortunately inforoo is full of elites who are too fancy for the type of simple pleasurable entertainment las vegas offers.
Unabashedly and unapologetically preying on people with addiction issues = simple, pleasurable entertainment. Got it.
And yes, I realize there is more to do in Vegas than gamble...but that's a recent thing, and it's still overwhelmingly a place geared toward that particular industry. I dunno. Part of it may be me - I've never had enough money that I could enjoy watching it get hoovered down the drain.
But, OK. What else has Vegas contributed to the cultural fabric?
Exactly. With Chicago, for example, it would be silly to not include the Baha’i House in Evanston, or Ronald Reagan’s birthplace in Dixon.
You wanting me to vote for Chicago?
I mean I wouldn’t say Dixon is a part of chicago, but if we’re doing the same good/bad celebrity analysis we did yesterday, Chicago has given us both Kanye West in 2005 and Kanye West in 2022.

I will say that probably more than any other city on this list you know what you're getting into with Vegas. It's literally nicknamed Sin City. Doing exactly what they are known for isn't exactly preying on people.

I don’t mean this as a defense but Vegas probably is *the most* American city culturally. It’s entertainment capitalism taken to its logical conclusion.
They also can claim Siegfried and Roy which I absolutely do mean as a defense.
Cons: Insane cost of living Insane humidity, with very few houses having air-conditioning. No seasons. Just always 80 and above. Insane traffic. 10 minutes to go 1/4 mile. Vog (volcanic fog) causes respiratory and eye illnesses. High crime rate. High racism particularly against Asian populations. Horrible public education.
