Cons: Insane cost of living Insane humidity, with very few houses having air-conditioning. No seasons. Just always 80 and above. Insane traffic. 10 minutes to go 1/4 mile. Vog (volcanic fog) causes respiratory and eye illnesses. High crime rate. High racism particularly against Asian populations. Horrible public education.
Pros: Nice views and good food.
How is racism tracked because I have some bad news about all these cities. Like even if we are going strictly in past treatment of indigenous populations.
This isn’t a defense of Honolulu, I just find that a particularly difficult metric to use. Even if we point out the obvious and say modern southern cities have worse racism you’d find people pointing to state laws from folks elected from red parts of the state outside of blue cities like Atlanta or Nashville. The effects on an individual level are the same but I’m not sure how much you can blame the city itself. Especially when things like red lining and police violence are just as prevalent across the nation.
unfortunately inforoo is full of elites who are too fancy for the type of simple pleasurable entertainment las vegas offers.
Unabashedly and unapologetically preying on people with addiction issues = simple, pleasurable entertainment. Got it.
And yes, I realize there is more to do in Vegas than gamble...but that's a recent thing, and it's still overwhelmingly a place geared toward that particular industry. I dunno. Part of it may be me - I've never had enough money that I could enjoy watching it get hoovered down the drain.
But, OK. What else has Vegas contributed to the cultural fabric?
I was in Vegas for almost four years, and in that whole time, I maybe gambled away a total of $100. I also saw (off the top of my head) Beck, Dweezil Zappa, Sarah Silverman, Penn & Teller, Eddie Izzard, the Book of Mormon, the Kids in the Hall, the New Mastersounds, Thievery Corporation, Iron Maiden, That 1 Guy, and Doug Loves Movies (twice). I went to Life is Beautiful. I ate at Nacho Daddy, Hash House A Go Go, the Cracked Egg, Mon Ami Gabi, the Cornish Pasty Company, and who knows how many other great places (and I was broke a lot then, so I didn’t even go to the fancy expensive places). I went on a ton of hikes. I went to all the museums I listed in my last post, plus traveling exhibits like the Bodies exhibit when it was at the Luxor. I got married by Elvis.

i say this with peace and love and but you kind of just proved my half-joking point.

I appreciate the peace and love, but I can totally take the hit. I wish I were an elite, though. That'd be dope, instead of me being just some unemployed shlub.
But! I guess maybe my wording was fancier than I meant it to be, but the point was, we had people last round arguing for Houston because Beyonce was from there, or whatever. Who's from Vegas? What's come out of Vegas? Musically, we're looking at The Killers, Panic! at the Disco, Ne-Yo, Imagine Dragons...and that's the cream of the crop.

I will say that probably more than any other city on this list you know what you're getting into with Vegas. It's literally nicknamed Sin City. Doing exactly what they are known for isn't exactly preying on people.
I mean, I guess? But I don't know that somebody advertising that they're evil makes them any less evil.
That said, I kind of disagree, because while Vegas puts out there what it is, the tactics employed by the businesses that operate there are really fucking gross and insidious. All that shit people talk about Facebook, Instagram, and other social media networks using to psychologically manipulate people and destroy their mental health? The casino industry does the same kind of thing, except with the express purpose of bleeding people dry of their money.
Again, if that were just, like, one small aspect of the Vegas experience, I don't think it'd bug me as much, but it's kind of the main thing. Like, "You can actually see some shows there, too!" doesn't quite make up for it, for me. I realize it's a YMMV sort of situation, and again, part of it is that I've never had enough disposable income to feel anything but horrible about the idea of gambling what money away I do have. But I just find the whole operation kinda heinous.
That’s just the Mormons for you. What else are you gonna do besides persecute them relentlessly, driving them further and further west like they did 150 years ago?

I can’t decide if this is to be read in the voice of a strong-jawed medieval knight or a sweaty southern Baptist priest.

DMS puts it much more eloquently than me, but the way i'd put it is vegas is big dumb fun. big lights, big building, big sexy, big food, big time. and honestly it's perfectly OK to not like that. like i enjoyed the Jack Reacher TV show but i completely understand if somebody watches it and says it's corny and poorly written, because it is, just like Vegas is gaudy and in your face and bright and shiny. it's a city for everyone that isn't for everyone, if that makes sense.
I am not sure why where someone is from is even part of the conversation unless they have/are affecting the current city (is/was mayor, comes back for a residency every year, etc.). I'm not moving to somewhere because they happened to birth someone cool or where a great band first got together.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I heard you were putting in applications all around Columbia because of a little band called Hootie and the Blowfish. This isn’t true?

Yeah it doesn't matter at all really it's just a funny thing to talk about.

I don’t think it matters but it’s fun to talk about and also the idea of, say, someone deciding they never want to go to Las Vegas not because they hate gambling or drinking or the dining but solely because Imagine Dragons is from there is incredibly hilarious.
