Oh so y'all gon make me do it? Okay. Here's why Philly is awesome:
Let's start with the music. Philly has no shortage of music venues - this map was created by yours truly and there are surely more. Just this month I've gone to six different shows (check my signature for deets - totally awesome and cool artists), and there was one that was canceled and three I ended up not going to (sometimes I'm a tad overzealous in how busy I'm willing to be ). Want to see 2manydjs in a 250-capacity club? Yeah Philly did that in 2019. That same summer Andre 3000 could be seen walking around the city playing the flute. Phoebe Bridgers also popped up and sang a couple tunes at the piano bar a block from my house last month. Proximity to music venues is one of the main reasons I moved to the city, and there are seven within a half hour walk for me. If you like music, Philly is the place for you.
Then there's the history. I'm not a history buff in the least but this is the city where our country was founded - the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were both signed here, and the US capital was moved to Philly from New York City for ten years while construction was taking place in DC. And of course there's the Liberty Bell and the Betsy Ross house and a million other things that bore me but are super important and interesting to other people. If you like history, Philly is the place for you.
Let's talk architecture/scenery. The most prominent building in Philly is City Hall, the largest freestanding masonry building in the US. It's glowing clock tower serves as a beacon to weary travelers and a daily photo spot for graduates and newlyweds.
The skyline is pretty dope too, especially when the buildings coordinate to show support for one cause or another, like when our beloved Eagles went to the Superbowl and defeated all-time shmuck and kid-kisser Tom Brady.
But it's not all cityscape. Philly is also home to numerous parks and green spaces, my favorite of which is Wissahickon Valley Park - great place to hike.
If you wanna see sumn' purdy, Philly is for you.
OH WAIT Y'ALL LIKE FOOD Philly has an AMAZING food scene. Whether you're getting street tacos from James Beard-nominated chef and immigration activist Cristina Martinez at South Philly Barbacoa, or are looking for fine dining establishments like Vetri Cucina or Zahav, Philly's food scene is a tantalizing mix of cultural delicacies. Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, Israeli...multiple options abound all over the city. My personal favorite is Marrakesh, a Moroccan restaurant where everyone eats a multi-course meal with their hands from family-style platters. There are bellydancers and the servers pour rose water over your hands to wash them, and the meal is capped with a delicious mint tea. All for like 30 bucks if you're with a group. Absolutely delicious.
And of course, the Philly cheesesteak. The debate rages about which places serves up the best combo of rolled, chopped steak, and cheese, but there's no doubt that Philly does it best.
I'll also take this opportunity to plug one of my college friends, Kae Lani Palmisano, who is an Emmy-winning food writer and host of WHYY's Check Please! Philly. Check her out here.
I really can't stress enough how good our food is. If you want good food, Philly is for you.
Sports We've won and we've lost, but through it all Philly folks are considered some of the most loyal in all of professional sports. Sports aren't really my thing but experiencing the Super Bowl win in a South Street bar with a bunch of Philly die-hards is one of my favorite memories. You can't walk down the street without seeing an Eagles logo somewhere. Just don't cross us, or you will be vilified for eternity (looking at you, Ben Simmons). If you want to be part of a thriving sports culture, Philly is for you.
Plus there's Gritty, the lovable anarchist nightmare mascot. 'Nuff said.
Culture/People Philly people are different. It's a known fact. We tend to be a little grittier, have chips on our shoulders, and are INCREDIBLY diverse. But we're also called the City of Brotherly Love for a reason. Motherfuckers here will give you dirty looks while helping you carry stuff since they saw you struggling.
Of all the cities in the US, not many can hold a candle to Philly in terms of diversity. We've got the third-largest Black population in the US after NYC and Chicago, the second-largest Irish, Puerto Rican, and Italian populations, and in 2017, 13.8% of people living in the city were foreign-born. While demographics do vary between neighborhoods (and some are admittedly more racist than others), no one looks out of place in Philly.
We also have a thriving LGBTQ+ community. Philly is home of The Gayborhood (my current locale) which houses 10+ gay bars, as well Philly Gay News, the oldest LGBTQ+ newspaper in the country.
If you like culture, Philly is for you.
Arts Aside from music, Philly has a thriving arts scene. Not only do we have the Philadelphia Art Museum, which houses Cezanne, Duchamp, and Dali (and is also the home of a famous scene from some boxing movie), but there are dozens of smaller museums throughout the city, and on the first Friday of each month the Old City neighborhood hosts open galleries for local artists. Oh and there's the Mütter Museum, which houses medical oddities, and Wonderspaces, a great museum of interactive installations that are great to view while totally baked. You may recall the Squidsoup installation from several Four Tet shows.
If you like art, Philly is for you.
I'll admit that Philly has its problems, as does every city. Violence is on the rise, certain neighborhoods are desolate wastelands of opiate addiction, corruption is rampant, and everyone drives like it's fucking Mario Kart. But it's a beautiful, wondrous place to live and visit.
unconvinced. I'm changing my vote to Philadelphia.

The write up was enjoyable, but I’m not drinking Trump beer. Philadelphia was also very enjoyable the 3 nights I spent there back in 94. It was a lovely place. And I had a bunch of lifelong friends from just across the Delaware River in South Jersey including a gf back when I was in college and she moved down. All great people. I too will switch my vote in their honor. But it’s going somewhere else this round.

This gorgeous photo almost convinced me to change my vote to a different city. Almost.
The first time I went to Boston, I went to Philly also. I did all the touristy things that Jaz talked about, including all the seriously nerdy history shit and it was amazing. I really liked Philly. Convinced, sticking with Nashville.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
