Justice should be close to releasing new music right? I feel like they could be in play to return next year. Do they still get slotted 3rd on their day like in 2017?
not sure we'll see them again for a while.
They have a few upcoming shows scheduled in Europe. I could see them returning if they have new material.
For EDM headliners/subs, it seems we know our likely players. Who we think is most likely between: Calvin Harris Rufus du sol Odesza Justice Martin Garrix Chem bros
This is Coachella, don't you dare count out Diplo and DJ Snake for the 500th time.
All jokes aside, Chem Bros would be amazing but there were so many opportunities for it to happen after 2011.
Don't think they'll repeat Justice.
ODESZA most likely if they'll take a sub, Rufus and Calvin shouldn't be counted out.
The one I am curious about is kx5, Kaskade is a Coachella darling, deadmau5 clearly buried the hatchet based on the fact that Testpilot made the 2020 lineup, it's something new. They are debuting at EDC though and they have a Memorial Coliseum date for December so maybe not - that may be an issue of another fest's sloppy seconds combined with radius clause issue.
They might have to get Kaytra on the second line next time he plays but definitely don't think they need to give him Jamie XX billing. 2manydjs definitely don't need second line billing. Chem Bros would work billing/spot wise for that. Also wonder if Moderat gets that Gesaffelstein style bump up to that spot next time they play - and they have new music out so maybe an album is coming.

Yeah but that’s no fun.
Also, I’m pretty surprised that after the initial Soulwax video and also TME’s rumor (I think?) that despacio was coming back that we got neither 2manyDJs or Soulwax this year. 2ManyDJs felt like an easy do lab surprise.
ALSO did anyone ever figure out who the W2 Saturday night do lab surprise that canceled was?

... their album is announced and has a release date.
How many artists played Coach this year from their 2020 albums cause of covid. Plenty of victory lap bookings happen and covid messed with some stuff. Kacey played in 2019 with Golden Hour being a year old and with a grammy win.
Kacey wasn't a sub though, she was on the third line and there's a big difference between that and subbing. Point being, by January 2023 there will be better choices for subs with more recent or forthcoming work. They're not gonna blow a sub spot on someone like RÜFÜS who's last album came and went and didn't make much more noise than their previous effort.
And obviously things looked different this year due to COVID but I'm not expecting Coachella to keep booking holdovers from the past year. Most likely Coachella will move forward with more fresh bookings.
So then its the Chemical Brothers or bust. And Kacey might end up being the stagecoach crossover cause she will def get to headline that next year and a top 4 spot at coach.

put Cut Copy in the Hot Chip spot and then the National can slot in somewhere between Portugal the man or St Vincent.
Let’s hope for our sake they’re not. Coachella bookings come in waves. Would we have thought they’d ever book aphex twin, soul wax, and cirez d in 2019?
A cut copy -> Simian Mobile Disco -> hercules love affair -> the presets -> trentemoller run would be fucking amazing and probably not that expensive to book
So then how did War On Drugs still get a main stage slot 4 years ago. Although Fleet Foxes is the cautionary tale of being first line and getting a tiny crowd. They still booked Caribou, Hot Chip and Spiritualized this year in terms of older acts. Theres still room for class of 2011 era acts on the poster. I mean does nobody want Robyn or Scissor Sisters? Yeah right, those would be stupid ass dance parties in the Mojave if they came back to the polo fields.
I feel like the "old" acts will begin to be 2000s rock/emo/pop punk bands that got skipped over in their prime. I think with how big Emo Nite's crowd was, how well When We Were Young fest sold, MCRs tour etc. they should see that there's huge interest in these types of bands. I hope they dip back into more 2000s hiphop and pop as well. I feel like that era would have crazy fun Mojave or Sahara parties. And the handful that are still really big can end up high on the second line and be outside or even headline. There's such a big space for throwback artists on the line ups. It's just, like Arcade Fire, they'd have to be ok getting much smaller placements than they used to. The people who still care about them will fill up their tents and have an amazing time.
I feel like Arcade Fire was a special case and it's not really useful as a comparison
In terms of them being a last minute add, I mean yeah I wouldn't say we should anticipate last minute adds like that to be normal.
I'm more so saying that if past-their-prime acts are willing to take less prime placements (like being in the Mojave instead of the Main or playing earlier time slots/not being featured) then there's a ton of space for throwback acts to thrive on the line ups. I'm not sure how many former huge acts are willing to do that, just hypothetically it would be amazing if a lot are willing.

How much has this festival changed in 4 years?
In terms of Cut Copy, who I genuinely adore, they just haven't been putting out very interesting works lately where Caribou and Hot Chip have.
Arcade Fire is a huge indicator imo. They were slipped in as a surprise because they couldn't hack it as a Coachella headliner anymore. They were the kings of a scene that's just no longer that important.

Or they were doing surprise shows already and were asked to play Coachella as a surprise.
