wait, how is it that boston has a 11pm curfew for concerts when great scott(rip) and obriens shows regularly go past that? is allston subject to dif rules?
i think it's something about how everything at both those places is 21+ so it's more of a bar that happens to have a stage with live music, as opposed to a music venue. idk exactly how the categorization works
I'm 100% in favor of every show ending at 11pm. There just shouldn't be insane penalties if it goes a little over, or if they want to do aftershows for festivals or how HOB has fenway concert aftershows... special situations like that. it's just that all that stuff makes it impossible to draw a line somewhere. but in general, every show should end by 11pm. there are plenty of bars to go to after if you want to stay out later (and i often do), but being at a venue from like 8 or 9 til 11 is the absolute perfect timeslot 99% of the time.
Just a reminder that Covid can still make a mess of the lineup and will do it at the last minute, if it happens. The Strokes and King Gizzard were my two most anticipated artists last year, and look what happened.
Festivals in cities where a lot of "name" artists live can get a local fill-in on very short notice, like Killer Mike is doing at Shaky Knees, but that's not as easily accomplished here. (Phish and Goose are close enough to be available on short notice, but Goose has other commitments that weekend and Phish is likely to cost way more than they'd want to spend for a fill-in that's not stylistically in the same neighborhood as the cancelling headliner.)
Maybe this is the real reason behind listing two artists in larger headliner font for each day. This way, if one of the two drops out at the last minute, for any reason, there's still one artist left who could be considered a genuine headliner. Then, you've got a handful of late afternoon to early evening artists who have the sort of repertoires which enable them to add another 15-30 min to their set on short notice, like The National, Maren Morris, and Bleachers, to pad out the day.

honestly i love late night shows, especially on the weekend. but its def an unpopular opinion in Boston. Chicago and NYC are the only cities I can think of in the US where concerts more commonly end after 11. we also don't have the public transport to accommodate it sadly.

This wasn't a covid issue though. It was an issue with his hearing

i do like Tyrone's belief that Phish are all just sitting around in Burlington, waiting patiently in case someone needs a festival headliner fill-in. Like, "in case of emergency break glass for Phish"

shhhhh let Tyrone have his little weird delusions
Regardless of the reason why any particular artist may have cancelled a show anywhere in the last couple of years, Covid is the most likely cause for any last minute cancellation these days. Covid is the great big asterisk suggesting that any touring artist might cancel any particular date on very short notice, because it's happened a ton of times specifically due to Covid in the last year and a half.

Boston Calling was able to line up a California-based artist to replace a dropped-out headliner; it's reasonable to suggest that there's an even greater likelihood of landing a replacement with a home base located within a few hundred miles.
I don't think that Phish is sitting around waiting for any calls, but they are theoretically available on that weekend. But, as I previously mentioned, the double headliner billing on the poster was likely done, in part, to leave them with one previously booked headliner in the lineup that day, should any headliner need to cancel due to Covid or for any other reason.

so aside from the beaches, the national, yyys and foos is there anyone else worth checking out friday?
Not sure what your genre preference is but I really like LEON. She's more indie pop-ish but I really have enjoyed all her albums and she was great the one time I saw her live. Looking forward to her set.
But yeah, other than her and who you already mentioned, Fri is pretty light.

As always, this is *incredibly* subject to change, but the long range forecast on Weather.com currently has highs in the upper 70's for all three days, with a mix of sun and clouds.
Let's keep our fingers crossed for the first edition since 2013 without at least one day of torrential rain, high winds, extreme heat, cold weather, floods, fires, earthquakes, or plague of locusts.
