I’ve mostly agreed with Pablo’s opinions in this recap so far but he just referred to “Cascada-type dance music that kids who were too into anime liked” and I’ve decided I’m going to give him the cold shoulder for the rest of my life
Yeah I saw you liked my Perfect Blue post ya nerd.
For the record I was mad on behalf of Cascada, not anime lol.
Pages Spanned: 1-9 Insider: No Infinitypass: No Drake: Yes Accusations of Bigotry: Yes Who looks likely to be voted off at this time: Given how hard everyone whined today you’d think it was a blowout but it’s still basically a tie between the blues and reggaeton. Quality of read (which, in honor of Pitchfork rating music all music 6.8 will be rated from 0.0-10.0): 8.4; lots of drama but it got weirdly heated Today’s random genre playlist: Today's playlist features 10 random “xtra raw” songs.
People briefly discuss getting rid of butt rock > I say jam music should go > But it turns out people are perfectly okay with The Disco Biscuits and Medeski, Martin, and Wood being in the same category. Who knew! > Mariah Carey’s alternative phase gets discussed > a shitty reggaeton song > a shitty hip huggghhhh who am I kidding, I like “My Humps” > Nathan Fielder makes a joke about “This Is Hardcore” (skip ahead to the bottom if you like jokes about “This Is Hardcore”) > Not liking reggaeton is racist > a brief discussion on what “alternative” means > Druid initially wants to save reggaeton. Be careful what you wish for! > Gary Shart, Jr. > jpbrez defends the blues > dubstep, trap, and reggae ton being the first 3 to go is maybe embarrassing, but again, we have to be honest: caring about the order in which *anything* goes is just a different kind of embarrassing. > (everything is cringe.) > > okay, sorry. Druid got despondent in one page, not six. > oh I apologize for posting a video of “Doomsday” like 3 minutes ago I thought not one posted it today. I should know better, postjack would never let us down > Is Hootie and the Blowfish buttrock? > I honestly remained impressed how Bing logs on every day and just lets out every opinion he’s ever had > Why don’t we just combine Survivor survivor with this survivor? > should survivors be age segregated? (Every year in our lineup threads, we all try to definitely claim what’s in the head of the median “cool” 18-20 year old in spite of the fact that none of us are that age. that shit just doesn’t matter honestly) > sang takes this is an opportunity to create an age poll > a side note: I know multiple people who think that video of Thom Yorke “singing” Gasolina is real! > committing incest to Jason Isbell’s saddest songs > good lord you all know my biggest pet peeve is a tie between two things happening and people treating that like there’s a consensus. By definition there isn’t! (See? we all just get mad about things in different embarrassing ways). > Anyway a lot of people are mad about blues maybe leaving > jpbrez is really mad about the blues > *sighing heavily * Joe Bonamassa > snowman goes to OBX > I finally get to say my piece about Americana not being real > there’s some conflicting posts on here about whether or not reggaeton is good in clubs > jpbrez is really mad about the blues > R&B is really good (true) > okay this is when this thread kind of starts going off the rails a little bit > tristan isn’t feeling the blues, Bing is going hard for his definition of reggaeton, sang has a somewhat confusingly written post that instigates a debate on whether or not certain artists are indie or R&B, problem dog goofs on jpbrez, elpingu is mad about truevine’s “get no bitches” comment, and of course there’s reference to the great “what is indie” debate that will almost certainly happen soon! > Meanwhile there’s a discussion on the origins of the four on the floor beat > Rummy shows up like once a day in all of these threads and says we need to argue about something we have already been arguing about a lot, I appreciate that commitment to not getting involved in this shit > Rakata > Cum starts her anti-classical music campaign > but classical also has its defenders. > Classical is definitely going to go out soon though and that’s also going to make a lot of people mad, you guys should probably start preparing for that now > people here like music too much > people discuss their favorite hardcore albums > snowman makes a “This Is Hardcore” joke (skip back up to the top if you like people making “This Is Hardcore” jokes)

People are mad about…I honestly don’t know what > Should we get rid of house and disco? (What) > old people hate having fun > Phil Collins > yacht rock > What’s the difference between techno and house? (At house clubs, people wear crazy shit; at techno clubs everyone wears all black. At funk clubs, esteban wears pimp suits.) > we’re still talking about blues I guess > Bootsy Collins > people get mad that house music is getting voted out soon (it’s not.) >
So, do you want to talk about buttrock? Do you really want to talk about fucking buttrock? Do you really want to argue about this thing we have spent fucking years arguing about to no avail on here?? I really fucking don’t. I barely want to talk about this, but I signed up to do so. So instead I’m going to make a fun visual aide to our fucking seven page long buttrock discussion:
Moving on.
There’s a brief discussion on if Kiss are buttrock or disco > unnecessary hostility > more debate on whether or not old people are good or not between people who are almost 30 and people who are almost 40 > The Kiss disco discussion sort of segues into a discussion about the evolution from disco into house > eurodance, baby! > a lot of fucking eurodance videos > a discussion on the music of RuPaul, which is mostly not good > UB40 > and of course, a brief discussion on blues

I went to an Applebee's on Thanksgiving in Florence, Alabama one year, there was a guy who bought Fireball shots for everyone sitting at the bar until they ran out, about two and a half bottles later. It's one of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had.
Pour one out for buttrock > esteban says getting rid of blues was racist (honestly, given how virtually every genre here can trace its roots back to black music in some way, voting out anything is kinda racist) > A brief discussion of an "old person" rebellion to protect blues from getting voted out > Vieux just wishes all genres could along liked they used to in middle school. She wishes she could bake a cake out of rainbows and smiles and they'd all eat it and be happy. > more like ambassadorofBORING amirite? > What's the difference between hyperpop and pop? (The graphic design, mostly) > The beginnings of a long discussion on if country music is good or not: > Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash: the people love them! > alt-country: the people love Jeff Tweedy! > Outlaw country: the people love...it! > SFA: the people love socialism! > Pop country: the people love being on boats! > Garth Brooks: the people love Princess Diana! > Vinyl collecting: the people love Conway Twitty! > David Allen Coe: he loves racism! > DMS: the people love reactionary politics too! > of Montreal: the people love fast casual dining! > Is there such a thing as bad music? > People try their hardest to share videos of bad songs, but I don't think anyone walks away convinced either way > Does hardcore include hardcore techno? (Fingers crossed!) > A brief discussion on some good things about hardcore music > What modern hardcore bands are good? (no War on Women videos were shared, smh misogynists!) > Teddy turns the fuck up at Applebee's > MPG vs Cum on reggae for like two posts > esteban vs use of the word "pussy ass" for like two posts > Some more discussion on the politics of country music > Duncan Sheik > people post a lot of songs with the word "blues" in it as a final sendoff for the blues. Gone but not forgotten...

Cum does NOT want classical played in the car > pablo doesn't want hardcore played in the car > Guys tried to impress cum with hardcore music (did they just consider playing 100 blues songs in a row instead?) > pop should go > bluegrass should go > jam should go > anyone else got any other suggestions on stuff that isn't leaving this round or the next? > people try the blues strategy for saving reggae and it's probably not going to work but let's give it a shot here > Kentucky gave us racism and also bluegrass > jorge is also from Kentucky but none of us are perfect > reggae has been on thin ice for a while now > Teddy has no guesses as to who's going to win this > Toots and the Maytals aren't going to convince anyone to not vote for reggae > same for Jimmy Cliff > hyperpop goes hard vs no it doesn't > people who hate jam music hate fun > which, yeah, duh > jpbrez didn't see any jam bands in South Korea > esteban has, unsurprisingly, seen a lot of jam bands > (again I like jam bands, but they all play wildly different genres of music. I am also aware this argument is not super convincing and I have basically been hashing it out by myself in parentheticals in this thread by myself.) > The blues are dead and we have killed them > Do punk and house share an ethos? (Maybe, but there's no such thing as crust house so I'm not totally sure about this.) > "Bunny Is a Rider" is good > but is Caroline Polachek hyperpop? > Yeah, she is > but is "Bunny Is a Rider" hyperpop? > no lol

The continuation of last night’s discussion of hyperpop vs pop > Not engaging in what “alterantive” means > Banding together against ambient to save hyperpop > Andrew bands together with himself to get out hyperpop > Will anyone remember this song that came out five years ago five years from now? > Should ambient songs be memorable? (People keep saying no but the answer is if it’s good, yes??) > ambassadoroffun really hates ambient (EDIT: he wants me to clarify this is not, in fact, the case) > The original hyperpop queens (Aqua, Cher, Kate, Billy Strings) > Bing has a very, very, very clear delineation between synthpop and hyperpop > Is grunge worse than hardcore? (maybe.) > Is Kate Bush hyperpop? (maybe.) > “Kate’s jockstrap”?? > Is Magdalena Bay hyperpop? (Probably not.) > esteban and pablo argue about which grunge musicians were good > Kurt Cobain Killed the Grunge Star > Are Smashing Pumpkins and Foo Fighters grunge? (The lines between grunge and alternative are blurring more each day!) > rebelbrad wants me to listen to something called “Frogstomp” and won’t even consider hyperpop masterpiece “100 Boyfriends” by Alice Longyu Gao? smh > why are we even talking about grunge when no one is voting for it? > (to get it to go next) > A Perfect Circle > Cum comes for disco > but rest assured, the people have come prepared with YouTube videos!

I don’t hate ambient! I have no strong opinions regarding ambient, which is as it should be. Ambient has its place, but it’s place shouldn’t be in the top ten because no one gets that many massages.

(There were surprisingly slim pickings today. Can’t really post a 9 hour long ambient album as a “song of the day”.)
Path of Discussion:
Do people listen to ambient that often? (Yes.) > Bing and pablo honor their pact with Satan to get rid of grunge > esteban really hates hyperpop > a brief debate about hair metal, again > esteban really hates disco too > deto is out for royal blood > listening to grunge vs listening to classical > If we brought Kurt back to life/there’s no way he would survive > hip hop vs. grunge: who defined the 90s more? > Jorge passionately (and kind of beautifully) defends grunge > hip hop in the 90s was very influential > Is hip hop and grunge even an appropriate comparison? (I kind of checked out of this debate at this point so I’m sure you all have more opinions than I do) > esteban and juggs square off re:Judgment Night > Rummy is about to be mad about hyperpop getting voted out in about 2 hours to 2 days > I was genuinely surprised to learn postjack was voting for folk. I’ve been trying to mostly be strategic with my voting…but, yeah, I might enjoy listening to folk the least compared to all these other genres! > (Folk is not going anywhere anytime soon and I realize that. I just want to take this opportunity to say: fuck Fleet Foxes.) > tristan and murso square off re:hyperpop > Bad country music is really bad……..but good country music is really good > (thanks for the callback ambassadoroffun! You are forgiven for hating massages.) > Rummy and pablo square off re:reacting to things > The origins of country music (there’s a whole Ken Burns documentary about it and everything) > Are the blues patriotic? > playing ambient music in the car to cause drowsy driving accidents > there’s a lot of general anti-bluegrass sentiment rumbling in the background this round > Getting Mad On Inforoo Survivor (pablo wins!) > Seriously, the royalty free “Teadrop” clone they made for House sucks so bad > Bing and I square off re:Aphex Twin and ambient music > You’re only allowed to like one psych rock band. (Mine is uhhhhhhh White Fence) > Where’s the Gregorian chant representation? > an endless parade of psych rock bands > Big Black: Songs About Fucking (to 100 gecs)
A random side note: the way I generate these genre playlists is by going here, clicking "all genres" then selecting the first genre that pops up, followed by going here, typing in that random genre, and then picking the first 10 songs that are by different artists. Usually this results in getting some very, very deep cuts in some pretty esoteric genres so it was a total surprise to 1) get a genre most people know with industrial today and then 2) have the first song that pops up be a song that I would guess pretty much everyone here has at least heard once. ("Heresy")
I'm so glad you put industrial in quotes there... Half of those are buttrock
all of them are in scare quotes because ultimately I am not the arbiter of what Spotify deems to be industrial or bothy ballads or whatever. (edit: though I did scroll further down the industrial list after creating the playlist and yeah you're basically right lol)
