Folk Sucks > people list a bunch of folk musicians they love being bored to > Has classic rock’s time come? > garageland inexplicably comes for soul, which will inexplicably become important later > juggs continues his anti-funk mission > disagree with postjack’s assessment of what years “alternative” vs “indie” were cool but he is right they’re meaningless > just like all genre categories!!! Ayo > not to make any shocking accusations here but I think postjack also likes Phish a lot > Is Parliament soul? (Something I legitimately feel like I shouldn’t have an opinion on!) > Jaz hates techno > Soul and R&B are pretty similar > but > was funk similar to soul? > Was Prince funk?? > pablo and juggs get mildly heated about this for like six posts and then the tension defuses almost immediately. So it goes > H(ye)perpop > we need to simplify this draft: the only two genres of music are “people banging rocks together” and “all music written or recorded since the first century AD” > you know what else was an important seed that sprouted later in this thread? sang liking Charli XCX more than some jam bands > but also Charli XCX is a fucking fossil now so who cares > hey remember when Jaz said he didn’t like techno? Let’s prove him wrong by linking a bunch of YouTube videos > (but before that there’s also there’s some Dead songs) > Is techno better than house? (*sighing heavily* no.) > The rumbling anti-bluegrass sentiment finally erupts > leading into a lot of strategizing on how to get bluegrass out > A brief discussion on if secret rounds are good or not (the consensus: yes, in moderation.) > murso sort of tries to get a debate going on what “pop music” means, which gets shut down immediately > I can’t believe esteban disliked my link to NSYNC’s best song. Smh > There was a brief moment where there was a genuine fracture between jam and bluegrass voters but I guess sometime tonight the regular lurkers all coordinated to get a tie going again > Bluegrass: is it white nationalist? (…) > The origin of the banjo > The Unbearable Whiteness of Ambient > pablo and esteban strategize about when exactly esteban is going to rip disco to shreds (the answer is: round 1 of this survivor) > the hyperpop vs bluegrass vs jam war didn’t really happen > is there going to be a tiebreak??
Lol I wasn't trying to stay a conversation about pop. I literally don't remember seeing it on any other survivor before this and was asking if it was called something else before

to seriously answer the question: most people call pre-50s pop music "traditional pop"; this term can refer to a LOT of different music but if you pull up a traditional pop Pandora station/Music Choice channel or whatever it'll usually be crooners.

Oh well fuck now I wish that hadn't come up because I was thinking z100 type top40 or Debbie Gibson or something

oh if we're talking about the meaning of the term "pop" in this poll I assume it's referring to all pop music ever made with the exception of anything AG Cook has ever produced.

since things have slowed down a bit, check out this playlist i made during the last survivor. it was intended to just be songs about gravy, but it ended up just being the UGK song "Gravy" twice:

Path of Discussion:
Some people are shocked by the anti-jam coalition (not those of us who planted the seeds rounds ago!!) > Ambient vs. bluegrass: a battle begins… > people who hate disco REALLY hate disco > do we hate having fun around here? (Yes) > Inforoo: we love water, just like all other 7 billion humans on earth! > Do people actually go see rock bands at festivals anymore?? (Lol) > People defend bluegrass to JTR > Billy “Motherfucking” Sucks > The origins of techno > people keep making claims about different generations and my brain shuts off each time I see one > Hip hop is going to last a LONG time in this survivor > Are bluegrass covers good? It depends. > Was techno more popular in the 90s than it is now? (probably…not?) > the “Do people listen to classical” discussion pops up again, which doesn’t really matter since classical is definitely exiting in like 2-3 rounds > thank you Jorge for being the only person here to appreciate my HSR reference smh > the influence of techno in 90s music > Some of those that make classical….are the same that make ambient > not sure why I referenced that but oh well, not deleting it now > When esteban was in high school, the genres were defined by who you hung out with: the criminals, the princesses, the brains, the athletes, and the basket cases > Underworld and the Prodigy: not really techno > Radiohead: also not really techno > Bluegrass isn’t techno either but I’m sure you get the point > idiot sangwich > OH BOY HERE IT COMES HERE’S THE INDIE VS ALTERNATIVE DEBATE I CAN’T WAIT > yeah the reason I disagreed with postjack’s years of indie vs alternative is actually something that comes up around here sort of jokingly but what was defined as “college rock” in the 80s and the fact that indie was already an established Thing in the UK! > anyway the discussion is shockingly levelheaded and nowhere near as insufferable as I imagined it would end up eventually being, with some interesting points about contemporary alternative vs indie bands being made (RHCP? The Strokes? etc.). Good work team! > Sorry siggy but bluegrass is definitely getting done dirty like this.
Ok so long story short I’m very tired right now and have to get up very early tomorrow so I can go on my long weekend bender. Updates may come but they will be sporadic. Godspeed

Secret round…revenge on my mind > Bluegrass covers > Medieval covers > The tambourine: not as anachronistic as you’d think! > Inforoo pretends to like classical music > Except when they don’t > Debussy lol > Folk may be more than just jingly jangly strumming and vocal harmonizing, but the vocal harmonies are usually the best part and you have to suffer through everything else to get there > The classical thread has a lot of people asking for recommendations > Maybe people are pretending to listen to other genres too vs. no they aren’t > Liking global folk music vs. liking American folk music (vs. liking Fleet Foxes) > Esteban listens to a lot of prog I guess which honestly kind of surprised me > which genres of music are fascist? (The ones I don’t like, which may or may not include Ariel Pink) > DMS is checking my last.fm page. Hopefully he doesn’t see that I listened to “Cool for the Summer” by Demi Lovato a few times this morning to practice just in case they have it at karaoke tonight > what punk bands are good? (The Clash, Bad Brains, Bikini Kill, a song about having mailroom sex) > Is Phish pholk? > the argument between Bing and a few others over whether or not people hashtag on here listen to classical keeps going > Shit Sonic > DMS says this board is insane for Janelle Monáe which isn’t true because like 90% of that is driven by me > sang does not listen to dubstep > Frank Ocean: is he R&B or something else? (Maybe he’s not our woman. He’s not our man. He is something that we’ll never understand…) > “Ripple” > elpingu posted a bunch of videos that somehow did not set off a “what is punk vs what is indie” debate > New Jack Swing > Druid hates country > murso comes in and there’s a lot of joke posts about classical > more like Jackmaninoff imo > Lofi heavy classical beats to study/relax to > sometimes country music is good > genuinely misinterpreted a Bing post as “nothing gets me hard like Beethoven’s 9th symphony” > Sturgill Simpson > Superfly > hold on guys my plane’s here gotta go
