I went through a HUGE alt-country phase in the late '90s. When I was studying abroad in Madrid, I bought a Eurorail pass so I could go visit my friend in Bologna, Italy It was a 32-hour train ride. Another friend in the program with me gave me a tape he'd made of two Uncle Tupelo albums - Side A was No Depression, Side B was Still Feel Gone.
You’re speaking my language here, but I’ve somehow completely missed the Honeydogs. I’ll need to dig in.

I think it could be time to consider country tbh. Dolly & Johnny can only do so much to counteract the massive pile of shit that is >98% of country music, especially these days.
Yeah I wish it was split a little like rock is. There is some really good country out there but so much terrible shit. I can't bring myself to vote out jason isbell and dolly yet though.
Why do we need hardcore when we have good old fashioned punk?
Why's it gotta be like this? I don't want blues or hyperpop to go. 😭

Just gonna leave Willie Nelson, Sturgill, Kacey, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams and Kris Kristofferson in the lurch like that huh

i obviously dont think dolly and johnny are the SOLE TWO talented country singers out there. i was giving two prime examples.
but i definitely agree with whoever has said country should've been split up like rock was.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

I haven't voted yet. I'm waiting this round, but I'm 100% down to vote country.
My stepfather, Ike, loved country. He would blast Dwight Yoakam's, It Won't Hurt at top volume when I was a kid. I'd rather be beaten than listen to that fucking song ever again.
There's country I like, but there's more country I don't like.
Dwight fucking rules. Thanks for reminding people of him. One of the better artist to survive the 90s shift to pop country.

and cool points to dwight for playing a complete piece of shit in Slingblade. i don't know a lot about him but he seems like such a sweetheart in interviews.

And if you are in these threads and the main argument you have against country is it’s for inbreds and cousin fuckers… I don’t want to see you in the politics thread talking left wing shit.
I’ll call you out for being a classist shitlib of the worst sort.
But I agree that modern popular country is mostly cookie cutter dogshit.

there is definitely plenty of country pop that is just bad. but some of it is good, it just doesn't speak to the experience of the typical inforoo'er, or otherwise describes a culture that inforoo doesn't find appealing or interesting. that's OK, we don't have to force ourselves to like music that doesn't appeal to us, but it doesn't mean it's all objectively bad.
having said that when i was abusing amphetamine heavily i had a roommate who would come home drunk and put on "it's 5 o'clock somewhere" and play it really loud over and over. that song is a nightmare to me and still gives me tweaker flashbacks when i hear it. so i hate that song and refuse to consider it objectively.
Even bad country is still fun when you're on a boat
I don't know that there's ever a good time for "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)." That post-9/11 period of hyper-jingoism in country was a pretty bleak era.

My hottest take here is that if you’re collecting vinyl it’s really fun to collect old country LPs.
During post-9/11 Bush hell, my cousin and I made a bunch of patriotic t-shirts and sold them at the flea market. I don’t fucking know why. We thought it would be funny.
The main thing we bought with the profits was a stack of vinyl Conway Twitty albums and the Rocky 4 soundtrack.

music as a whole is subjective though. there is no such thing as truly bad music. i do not like country because it doesnt appeal to me so i am voting for it

i'd offer a specific trigger warning but it's like every trigger one could have is in there.
Oh, man. I was exposed to DAC's music pre-Internet, and got really into it without knowing anything about the guy. In particular, his cover of "Please Come to Boston" is something I'll still spin from time to time:
