the Smile make even less sense for NJF than they do for NFF
didn't they play Montreux Jazz Fest?
Yeah but Montreux has strayed pretty far from “jazz”. Last year they had Fred again and Bjork and Nick Cave and Phoebe Bridgers and whatnot. NJF sticks pretty close to the genre, comparatively.
Yeah it looks great this year. Might have to reconsider Osheaga and do this instead, will probably be easier to convince friends to trip to RI instead of Montreal too. But I have time to decide
Also it’s kind of a bummer how much better NJF is than NFF. Way more creative imo.
Yup NFF stopped trying to be creative when they know it can sell out without any issue and little effort.
I’ve been enjoying NJF as a whole lineup better than NFF for a few years now.
I mean, credit where it's due - NFF does a cool job with stuff like the Joni Mitchell performance last year, etc., but by and large the lineup itself is way too inside the box. Too much reliance on "folk family" and recycling the same acts over and over NJF seems like they strive to do a better job of booking both a) that year's big/hot names, and b) unique sessions and groupings. Though I will say, I have to imagine that lots of those kinds of acts which might fit the NFF umbrella are too pricey for NFF to land, whereas jazz acts are probably comparatively cheaper in terms of booking costs.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Jazz did jump ridiculously from $225 last year to a whopping $280 this year, which is more expensive than folk.

Josh Ritter and Gregory Alan Isakov are in the Maine and Vermont on Thursday and Friday. Could see them being part of the lineup. Josh has a Boston show in May, but not sure if that's preclude him playing.
Never been to Jazz Fest but this lineup is super cool. Can't possibly justify 2 straight weekends in Newport though.
(Big Gigantic Does Jazz sticks out the most to me. They're like a high-energy poppy EDM group with a guy who plays saxophone. If they do a jazz set, it's going to be either the most fun or the worst thing ever and i'd bet on the former.)

Diana Krall will play at Newport Jazz Festival in August.
New Lana Del Rey album is out and it’s very good. Features FJM, Jon Batiste and Bleachers. I could see this translating to a headlining performance at NFF.

I don't see it for this year, I don't think Newport can afford her during a new album touring cycle. Newport tends to get bigger artists in between albums.
We’ve entered the part of the announcement cycle where it’s just a bunch of people with their guitars singing sad songs. (I know, I know, this is a folk festival.)
