I don't think that's happening. Billy basically did it already on that Covid Monday.
Aside- Jacket put on their discord that they have major announcements today, tomorrow, and Wed at 1pm. Album, Fall tour, Newport headlining set?
I bet we get Jacket headlining one day, Isbell another (one or both with some guest(s)). Leaving room for 1 tribute/legend something or other that we aren't expecting. Would be surprised if it was Doc Watson, though. Especially closing the whole festival.

This year will be my tenth NFF and (regrettably) the only thing I know about Doc Watson is that his name is on the late greats sign at the Festival. I would stay for the set but I would feel a little out of place and think the majority of the audience would be in the same boat.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Friday: Lana Del Rey Saturday: Jason Isbell hosted Crosby tribute Sunday: My Morning Jacket
I'm not sure how much this matters now that Floydfest got cancelled, but MMJ was supposed to play there on Sunday. So I would think Newport has a different Sunday headliner, but MMJ Friday feels very reasonable
Where do we think John Oates fits into the schedule? Obviously, he has name recognition. But it doesn’t look like he plays Hall and Oates songs. His recent solo sets seem very stripped down, and I think he covers old folk songs.

Saw him last year in this exact configuration. Yes he does play H/O songs.

My mock has him in the same spot as Graham Nash on the Quad a few years ago

I could see him closing or second-to-closing the Harbor

I think I'm probably on an island on this one, but Twiddle and Neighbor got added to Beach Road too. I'd take a Mihali solo set. There isn't a ton of jam currently. Also Neighbor, but that seems unlikely.
I know that it will by the end of announcements, but it’s going to take two solid weeks of announcements for Newport to take the lineup throne from Beach Road.

eh i dunno about that. aside from Bon Iver and Alvvays, there's nothing on Beach Road that is either a) good, or b) hasn't been at NFF in the past couple years.

Japanese Breakfast ended up with the worst spot on last year’s schedule (because of Covid), so I’d be happy with a return. Been wanting Dispatch to play Newport for years. Cory Wong would be fun. (Although I know he’s better suited for Jazz.) I was hoping we’d get a Dinosaur Jr.-style act this year and so far nothing, And I’m starting to think Newport won’t have any headliners on par size-wise with Bon Iver or Mumford and Sons. (Although I know Billy Strings is probably a bigger draw at the moment than either of those other acts.)

Why not just call it a Crosby tribute set? The misdirection was necessary last year because the artists getting tribute were going to be part of the set.
Not to mention, Joni was part of “Brandi and Friends” and Paul Simon with “American Song Revue presented by Nathaniel Rateliff”

yeah i don't think its a Crosby set - though I could easily see Isbell pre-headlining and then coming back out for one after
my stupid brain is still holding out hope that with Graham and Nash both active this year, and with Neil Young finally deciding to play shows again, we get all three for a Crosby thing but that's probably too much to ask
