Gotta keep in mind. Billy is booked all weekend, so there isn’t gonna be a lotta time for practicing for some one off set. So that points to a comfortable set in my opinion.
But he’s also the same guy that did an entire Doc Watson set because they got to their trailer and there was a photo of him on the wall.
Yeah but he plays Doc and bluegrass covers on the reg. It’s comfortable,

To be fair, Del Water Gap isn't the Jonathan Richman replacement. The replacement would be the person who literally takes that time slot. Del Water Gap is the replacement for Gabriels. I'm only slightly familiar with Del and was only just getting into Gabriels for a week or so before they canceled, but that replacement feels appropriate. M. Ward is the replacement for Jonathan Richman and is probably the "sexier" name for the majority of the Newport audience although I would prefer Richman. The replacement for Orville seems weak, especially given the amount of time they had to prepare, however Phil Cook has produced two of the best sets I've seen at Newport between Grandma's Hands Band and the after show that featured guest spots of Margo Price, John Prine, Brandi Carlile, Mumford & Sons, Courtney Barnett and many more. I trust that that set will turn into something special.
I don't think these replacements are the unforgivable downgrades you think they are. Those people on FB do suck though.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

That Sunday evening set is not set up for success. Up against Lana Del Rey, the Dawn Landes & Friends set which is sure to be a female folk bonanza and then bleeding into the Sunday Fort closer. Hard to see it being too much of a draw except for die hard Folk Family. Kind of feels like they just needed someone to take one for the team.

I don’t think it’s unforgivable. I was disappointed. People take the disappointment to mean I hate Newport. That’s not the case, I just know this festival has been so much better than it is and mostly that’s because Newport has fed this line of being poor for years, even tho they pay their staff very well (just not the artists).
I’ve seen Del Water Gap 2x, as can anyone who has any half interest in seeing them because they’re basically always playing around here it seems. It’s not against that act as much it’s against replacing what i considered 3 really cool gets (an exception to the rule this year for me) with a couple of acts that you can either see anywhere you want or just aren’t that popular anymore.
Honestly what sets me off more about the FB group is the random trolls and people who police opinions than the replacement itself.
Speaking of the salaries of the staff. It’s pretty impressive that this festival went from “there’s a chance we’re not gonna make it through Covid cancellation” to STILL paying the staff very well, without skipping a beat. It’s all public data, go have a look.
I also agree it’s a bad look to keep saying they can’t pay talent, while still paying themselves very well.
It’s also why I have a hard time buying into the foundation packages. I just don’t agree with how they run it all.

Phil cook has a big part of the Piano Recital aftershows. You are correct in that he will do something great.
Just throwing this out there: GF and I are still on the waitlist and will be in Newport regardless (the one time we sprung for nice lodging and it required a deposit 🤦♂️), so if any literally last minute issues come up and some spares become available, you know where to find a buyer!

I have 1x extra for Happiness Thursday night (would need to walk in with me). Let me know if you're in need (would take a trade for a single Childers also if that made sense for anyone).

I hope it works out for you guys!
Thanks. Of course the one year we splurge and get a nice place to stay after usually going for the cheapest deal (often the motel 6) 🤷🏻♂️
At least it’s a beautiful location with good food if nothing works out.
